Referee Weeks is a gutless coward!

I have mix feelings about Weeks asking Alvarado if he wanted to stop. It kind of puts the fighter on the spot for something that should be the responsibility of the trainer. There's a stigma behind fighters saying no mas so ideally it should not be up to them to decide when to stop. On the other hand, I think Weeks saw the corner wasn't looking out for the health of the fighter so took the responsibility on his own hands. Good post, this is how I feel

After such an brutal action packed fight, in which both combatants fought with inspiring passion and desire, I find it impossible to complain about the officiating. The right guy won. Calling someone a gutless coward via Internet is a gutless cowardly act in it's self.

To me it looked like Alvarado was looking to stop on the 1st KD - with good reason. But he decided to stand and Weeks allowed it to go on. Mike needs a long rest. Ruslin broke a very tough guy tonight.

I thought he did a good job. That "let me hear it from Mike" was reminiscent of the Cotto vs Foreman fight!

It was conclusive but what about the health of the fighter? The referee has a duty of care, those extra couple of rounds did him no favours physically, they probably scrambled his brain like Bradley who also had a ref keep him in the fight and ended up fighting concussed for 10 rounds. i would really like to know what were your comments on the scott vs chisora controversy were you against it or did you think the ref made the right call? considering alvarado has faced two hard hitters before in Prescott and rios but you didn't show any concern for his brain after those fights i think your kidding with me right now. also the head shots weren't what was hurting alvarado it was the body shots.

Alvarado was playing with fire right there but hey he was getting up at 9 so fair enough it is the refs call as to if he was up or not.

He got up just in time, nothing wrong with that. But I am a bit curious why he completely ignored his trainer when he wanted to stop the fight and asked Alvarado directly. That's weird, I never saw that before. The eighth round.

Weeks did the right thing. You don't stop that fight at the time of the 1st knockdown. It's a disservice to the viewers and the fighters. If it's stopped there, the fight would've been clouded in controversy. Instead, Ruslan beat Mike until he couldn't take it anymore. No excuses, no controversy. And we got another FOTY candidate.

If tony stopped it you guys would be b*tching about how tony ruined a potentially classic fight. Seriously cannot win with boxing fans. Tony weeks reffed this fight perfectly. Exactly. You dont stop an epic fight because of half a second in one direction or another. Thats not what this sport is about.

Gotta agree, this is one of those moments where I'm glad we got to see the full fight, it gave Ruslan the type of win he deserved instead of a potential controversial stoppage, even though Weeks did pretty much finish his 10 count like a fool :lol1:

You sound stupid and in the words of roger mayweather " you don't know **** about boxing" he allowed the CHAMP the opportunity to cont fighting. Because he got up before 10 and wanted to cont. He knows what type of fighter Alvarado is, he's the champ and he was at home. You don't end a fight like this, like that idiot. And as far as the corner, once again he knows what type of fighter Alvarado is so he wanted to make sure it was mikes decision..great ****in ref job, def top ref in the business alongside bayless, and the big head older white guy..can't think of his name right now.. He was clearly waiting to get up at 9. Weeks did nothing wrong.

Disappointed in the fight, but hey. It is what it is. Alvarado is still the man, Provonikov was just the better man tonight.

Weeks is one of the best refs in the business, I'm glad he didn't stop it because the controversy would have been crazy, now thanks to him we got to see the fight end in an non controversial manner. Didn't y'all cry about the Scott vs Chisora stoppage?

It would have been garbage to stop the fight at the first knockdown, alvorado was clearly ready to fight, wanted to fight, ruslan wanted to fight, the audience wanted a fight. It would have been bullsh1t to stop it at that point... Those guys are two warriors haden't been right to stop it in such a way on a technicality. They wanted to fight it out to the end and thats what they did.

I thought Alvarado got up in time. And counting up to 10 doesn't automatically mean you are out. The ref can let you go on after 10 if you get up just at 10 and show that you have all your senses, which Mike did. Weeks did nothing different from what Mercante Jr did with Foreman in the Cotto fight.
