Truth be told Ortiz did a lot better than those two. I mean Canelo did have the hand speed but his feet were too slow and Guerrero had no foot or hand speed. Guerrero only had the southpaw stance going for him. Ortiz came in with the right mentality for that fight. He started off at the center of the ring but he did a hell of a lot better job at cutting off the ring than Guerrero or Canelo. In the fourth round Ortiz put combinations together and started landing a few. We knew that Ortiz wasn't going to win a boxing match against Floyd and he switched his tactics against the ropes and every time Floyd would get away Ortiz wouldn't be turned around so quickly like Mayweather did to Guerrero and Canelo. Ortiz had the size weighing 164 on fight night, southpaw stance, the foot speed, and power to make it more competitive for Floyd. We also know that unlike Canelo Ortiz would have had the stamina to keep the punch volume up as well. It's too bad Ortiz lost his mind.
All I'm saying is that Victor Ortiz had the formula to make it competitive with Floyd. Yes, Ortiz was losing but he was doing acceptionally well for a hand picked opponent. No one can say Ortiz was completely dominated or out of the fight. Ortiz is a combination of everything we think would trouble Floyd: southpaw, size, hand and foot speed, stamina, and volume puncher. I say Ortiz needs two solid wins to come back and I will not accept anything less than a Lopez, Peterson, or Maidana rematch no matter if they all lose their next fights but he needs a win with them for confidence.
Yo my man, ease away from the keyboard. Take a deep breath. exhale.
Vic was getting tatooed and was so frustrated he headbutted floyd in attempt to get dq'd or inflict some damage because his punches weren't landing.
Ghost and Canelo didn't look for the cheap way out that Vic did.
I can't believe Canelo fought Floyd like that.
The best way to fight Floyd is a mixture of what Hatton, DLH, Cotto, and Castillo did.
Hatton had the quick aggression and footspeed. Cotto and Oscar lead with the jab and were defensive and safe before getting inside. Castillo made sure to outwork Floyd every time he was close.
Hatton, Ortiz, and Chavez both made Floyd work but were way too reckless. It's impossible to outbox May. He's the best pure boxer maybe ever. JMM is one of the best technicians and he was absolutely embarrassed.
A prime Mosely and Oscar would have been interesting. Same with Winky Wright.
I knew Alvarez was going to do that. He had bought into his own hype. Those bullsh*t scorecards in the Trout fight did him no favors, rather than try to improve on a close fight he could have lost he bought into the "slick boxing" sh*t.

This Canelo guy obviously dislikes chasing his opponents even when he had to like in his last Saturday fight. If he did the chasing in the very first round the fight might have been more competitive and interesting. Standing with Floyd in the center of the ring is a stupid game plan. That's what made Floyd Floyd. Why don't they ever learn?

Say what you want about Ortiz but at least he had the mindset that he was going to make it a dog fight and go out on his shield. Canelo with all of that size advantage was not as aggressive as he could have been.
That's one thing about Margarito or Williams that I wish I could have seen Floyd have to deal with. Those guys would be completely outmatched but they'd still keep on coming forward and throwing punches no matter what for all 12 rounds.

I'm not sure why these dudes think that is the way to go. Guerrero did it, and now Canelo. What in gods name are they thinking.

I never said Ortiz would have won but he for sure showed more speed, power, and better foot work than Canelo or Guerrero
True but he also showed he was a dirty fighter that used dirty tactics like Canelo, Guerrero and Judah did against mayweather!
That's the thing, he was beating him easy for 3 rounds then mentally checked out. And against Floyd he mentally submitted in 4 rounds, that headbutt was just asking for a DQ
I agree he did go on cruise control after 4 against Peterson but if you remember the 2nd time he dropped him the ref gave Peterson a standing 8 count he shouldn't have done that Ortiz was about to stop him ref bailed him out.
that headbutt against Mayweather was Ortiz trying to be something he is not and then went overboard with the apologizing probably his corner told him to get dirty with Floyd because he was getting hit with elbows
Canelo is a better boxer than Ortiz, but Ortiz is a better athlete. Floyd had a bit of trouble adjusting to Ortiz's explosive rhythm. Canelo gave Floyd very little openings, but Floyd is just that good at finding ways to catch you.
Ortiz was not incredibly effective against Floyd and in the end, he paid dearly for his lack of focus, but he was able to sustain some semblance of an attack because he had stamina.
Unlike Canelo, Ortiz is well-conditioned. He's actually completed triathlons, so he not only had a size advantage, he had the cardiovascular base to actually try to apply it. Additionally, you can't undervalue the fact that when Ortiz entered the ring against Floyd, he didn't have the mental burden of knowing that he'd tire mid-fight.
As I pointed out repeatedly before September 14, Canelo has been plagued by poor stamina (this wasn't something that just emerged in the Trout fight) and if you watch Mayweather-Canelo again, you'll see the usual signs of Canelo's poor conditioning. So it's no surprise that he was unable to sustain any meaningful effort.
Great post. I agree completely. Even Canelo knows that to beat Floyd you have to pressure at times, but like you said, Canelo knew he didn't have the stamina to maintain such a strategy. Also its not in Canelo's mental makeup to take punches to land punches. He shouldv'e utilized his weight advantage more and traded counter rights for hooks to Floyd's liver. I'm not saying to get predictable with it or do non-stop, but its gotta be part of the gameplan.
he beat Peterson should have stopped him really but no excuse for Lopez ending your career

4 rounds lol. Ortiz had some really impressive stretches vs Maidana, Lopez and Peterson, too bad about the rest
he beat Peterson should have stopped him really but no excuse for Lopez ending your career
I guess I'm the only one who thought Canelo did better then anyone since DLH. I thought he landed some good shots in each rd. Floyd edged out most rds, and they were mostly close rds.
Never at any point in that fight was Floyd in complete control like he had been in all his other fights.Yes he was, lmao. Floyd was in complete control. You and CJ are the only people who didn't think that Floyd was in control.

No he didn't, lmao. Ortiz did worse than those guys.
