Did not like that stoppage at all. Mares was getting up but the referee refused to even give him a chance.
Why dont you give a fighter a chance?
Let him get up, see if he can touch his gloves and see if he is able to follow instructions. To not even give him a chance is a disservice to Mares.
I hate referees like this guy and jay nady. Give a fighter a chance to see if he can continue.
It's really a tough call and I'm not sure whether people understand that.
You are right, and I do. All I am saying is that I think it would have been better officiating if he had given Abner his full count of ten, and then made his assessment. As it is, we are left to speculate, as you see filling this thread. Anyway, that's all I'm saying.
Good stoppage, his eyes were not focused and it would have ended in the next round. 1 minute would not have been enough time to recover and he would have taken unnecessary punches.
About three minutes after the fight was stopped, it showed Mares still shaking his head trying to break the cobwebs free, and another 3 minutes past that point, it showed Mares sitting and staring blankly and unfocused into space.
And you still think it was stopped too quick? LOL

I agree, I wanted the fight to continue but given the way Mares was getting up, this in no way was a bad stoppage.
It was a judgement call.
Most likely he would have gotten up and absorbed a few more concussive shots before geting knocked out cold.
No sense in letting that happen to a young fighter like Abner.
He was not going to recover.
That said, I think he will most likely win a rematch if there is one.
just give it up mares fans....it's over...mares just can't hang with a smart boxer with power..he would also get stopped by donaire, rigo and mikey garcia...
I hear ya', PE, but I would say (humbly) that it's NOT always better to be 'safe' than to allow a fighter the chance (at least!) to show whether or not he can continue. The chance (by means of a full count). Then, if the ref really felt Abner could not respond adequately -- mentally and/or physically -- fine, call it. But that's not what happened. And all of those posters who are acting like it was out of the question that Mares could possibly have shown himself able to finish out the round and then have a minute to further recover are, IMO, going beyond what we know.
Yea thats true. Always is too strong of a word. I would've let Mares continue but I do understand the referee's decision. It's really a tough call and I'm not sure whether people understand that. The ref has to make a decision that he's able to live with when he goes home at the end of the day.
... it's always better to be safe than sorry.

Just got back from vacation and saw the fight. I have mixed feelings about the stoppage. I can't say it was bad because Mares was badly hurt. His eyes were glossy and legs were visibly shaken. I do believe Mares could've made it out of the round however. He definitely wanted to continue (he said he was ok after both kd's) but it's always better to be safe than sorry.
On a side note, game plan and knowing your opponent is so underrated in boxing. Gonzalez/Nacho knew the left hook would be there and executed perfectly. Mares is one of my favorites and he's a very good fighter but when he throws his right hook he drops his hands and is wide open. Gonzalez set it up and took Mares out.
Mares was also gracious in defeat. He is a true champion and will definitely bounce back from this loss. I would love for him to go back to working with Nacho. Improving defensively is the last piece of the puzzle for Mares.
you are talking like it was the 12th round or something , that is why Referee should have given the champion A CHANCE !!
If Meldrick Taylor reads this thread , he is going to commit suicide

Mares was out after the 1st kd. Ref had to remind him to raise his gloves before letting him continue. After the 2nd kd, mares eys were glossed over, and legs were gone. Good stoppage. Refs job is to protect the fighter, especially from himself! I'm sure mares couldve gone on, but at what price does he pay for getting seriously hurt?
You live to fight another day and therell be more good days for abner. Just not sure if he should stay at the weightclass. Looks kinda small.

Your an idiot. He was badly hurt the ref did a good job.
Just because you say "I can fight" to the ref while you're sitting glassy-eyed on your ass doesn't mean you can actually fight...
Maybe the ref should have let saved by the bell rules prevail, but his job is to protect the fighters. Most of the fights a referee oversees involve guys far beneath Mares' paygrade, he stopped it at a proper point imo.
It was a bad stoppage considering he was the champion and had 5 seconds left in the round. Even Plankiao got an 8 count and he was out for 3 minutes. lol
mares wasn't getting up after the second kd. if he did, he would've been totally defenseless and gonzalez would have landed a few more hooks that could've done permanent damage. even mares couldn't argue the stoppage.
Pointing out a stupid bet/lie makes me look like a gambling addict? Don't be mad because you disagree with my stance. :bottle::bottle::bottle:
Sorry buddy, but you pointing out a man's bet as if he was only going to win $5 only leads me to believe you're thinking Vegas odds and you were trying to insult him. I only insulted you back because you come off as a douchebag looking down on someone.
I have no idea if you bet like that, I was only expressing an opinion how you came off and you were trying to down-talk the man like I did to you. Doesn't feel pleasant? Does it? I was being very tongue in cheek with the comment, but at the same time I guess you were too.
Maybe, you should just choose your comments more wisely for a more respectable reply from people? Or maybe not? :poke:
I wish Mares would have been allowed to finish the round but the Ref's job isn't to worry about how much time is left on the clock, etc. Sometimes Ref's have to protect fighters from themselves and negligent corners. Had Mares gotten up he probably would have just received more flush shots from a hard puncher, not a good combination.
I respect Refs that make a decisions and stick by them regardless of the scrutiny, the supportors of the defeated fighter are never pleased with the stoppage anyway unless the guys is near death. Then guess what.... the Ref gets blamed for allowing it to go on so long!
I wasn't supporting Mares.
I'm sure it was straight up $100 for $100 with a co-worker or friend, but then again I'm not a Vegas gambling addict as what you make yourself look like.

Should have gave him the 10 count. The ten count is there for a reason. This stopping it early when guys arent even out cold is non sense. See the gif in my sig? That's when you stop counting. There were ten seconds left in the rd. I wonder if the ref heard the warning bell?
I won money on the stoppage if you are questioning my bias.
