After his dreadful performance in his rematch with wlad he was completely written off as a fighter. Mahoney made the disasterous decision to match his prize fighter with thompson. A 15 fight novice with a couple domestic wins on his resume vs a 41 year old 2 time world title challenger who was still in the top 10. Thompson wins in 2 & still gets no respect but earns a fat check & another chance to prove it was no fluke. He does it again & then hughie fury challenges him. He takes an eliminator fight instead. He has become some what of a household name over in europe. I bet his phone will start ringing more as he will get more offers from european promoters. Good for tony & who would have thought thompson would even get another big fight after the wlad rematch?
losing in a title fight only helps if you look impressive
Thompson didn't look impressive in either Wlad fight, especially the 2nd
he's just another guy who can be fun to watch against lesser HW's
being KO'd twice by the champ, he can't go past journeyman status
and after his latest loss, any stock he had dropped off
like Thompson, but he's all but done now
Maybe i missed something but after the wlad loss he was disregarded by everyone on this site & very few gave him a chance vs price but i called both wins as i thought maloney was a fool to match thompson with price. Losing to wlad twice makes you a journeyman? You got pretty high expectations. Thompson got 3 fights in 8 months vs good fighters so how is he done? The phone started ringing more as he was brought in as an opponent & fought his way to an IBF eliminator( yes a few others refused the fight)... That doesn't sound done to me...

I said the same thing about wladimir... Hasn't lost in 10 years... I don't think price is going to win a world title but ever since i was sitting at tilley's drinking coffee at 16 & watched douglas ko tyson i never say never...
Funny thing is Price has a longer reach than Wlad yet he has no idea how to utilise his jab to his advantage. He needs proper coaching, at least he'd have a chance of doing something.
I'm assuming thompson will take a break after 3 big fights in 8 months but he was fairly inactive for the previous years so maybe he can sqeeze in another fight by xmas. I'm sure he will get some calls from european promoters. Get him in there with boytsov.
yea,,price can crack. no doubt about that. its a shame his chin and mental toughness are so bad
Even if Price never puts it together he could still have a decent career & make some money as a gatekeeper or at the domestic level. He was mopping the floor with the journeymen like raphael butler & matt skelton so he is a C+ fighter with B potential if he improves his defence.
One thing i know about Price after this fight is that he can punch. Pulev landed some big rights that thompson took well. The same clean punch by price floored him. That can help price if he can improve his defence & start fighting tall. Let's see thompson in with chisora, arreola, boytsov or helenius. Maybe solis...

Price certainly has a lot to improve. Still, it seems the main issue is his chin, and with a weak chin at HW, he won't ever get very far.

Strange but i actually think price can still be a decent HW if he takes a step back & works on defence, stamina, his jab & fighting tall. He has no chin but he laid thompson out with his right, pulev landed several big rights & thompson took them well. You can't teach one punch KO power & price has it. That right in the 9th that pulev hit thompson with( when tony switched to orthodox) would have been a knockout if it was price hitting him. I thank pulev for giving me a little hope price can still be in the mix. Hopefully price can be better then travis walker but he could end up like raphael butler( big puncher with nothing else)

If I was managing the tiger I'd be calling up Richard Towers or Lucas Browne. Try to set something up for late this year.
Lucas browne down under could get him a decent payday.
Yeah, I feel happy for Thompson, he's not a bad heavyweight at all and hopefully he will get a couple more good paychecks before retiring. He exposed what a hype job Price is (was) and has gained a lot of respect in Europe. Kudos to the Tiger.

I think Thompson's win over Price said more about Price that it did about where Thompson is in the heavyweight division. I am glad we are not seeing him in with a Klitschko now.

He'll get a few more too until he loses a few on the bounce like Audley Harrison.
Yep & you have to wonder if maybe thompson got a few bigger fighters earlier how good he could have been. He never got any big fights until his mid 30s...
Hughie fury challenged him & maloney put price in with him too which i said was a bad idea from the get go & it was... They disregarded thompson as a threat. They thought he was done & rolled the dice. They also paid him peanuts the first fight. Tony took it to see what he had left... He's gotten 2 6 digit paychecks since...

Not sure where you're going with this thread, Thompson is/was a very effective HW and most respected of all the US heavies globally!
He put up good showing against Wladimir.

He's a former challenger who is at the end of his career but is still a name worthy scalp a stepping stone to a title fight, he's only going to get worse from here on out and will be a target for anyone that wants to make the jump up. Being a stepping stone doesn't mean a fighter is bad just a platform for others to make a big move up hence the "stepping stone".
No doubt will decline but wlad makes everyone look bad. Maloney gave tony new life & you are right everyone will try & make him a stepping stone but i consider it a mistake if fighters take him lightly...
Tony deserves tons of respect for the way he's handled himself this year and the way he's fought people who were considered top contenders or prospects at world level.
It is a bit sad that he's more valued in Europe than in his home country. The US has a fighter who at 42 would take the challenge and does not duck anybody and is still actively pursuing world title shots, but his countrymen seem to be bedazzled by flashy Wilder taking shots at fighters barely in the top 100 or extremely limited fighters like Mitchell and Banks.
V.true, Bryant Jennings was offered this fight for six figures and he turned it down.
German fans are especially respectful but they don't add much to the atmosphere, it was a like a library at times during that card last night.
Personally I'd like to see Chisora v Thompson. I think Thompson still has too much for a green Hughie Fury.
Yes they are a quiet crowd compared to brits... Who is the girl in your signature? Love the sharon stone shot. Was that on live tv? Looks like she flashed it... Lol! Lovely woman indeed...
