Despite the knockout, he is a faded fighter. I think this a devastating loss. Not only to Mares' reputation but to Golden Boy's 126 lb division.
Let's be honest, Donaire and Rigo would have iced him as well.
It's boxing anything can happen and when you're up against a big puncher all it really takes is one little mistake and it's good night. I think Mares underestimated Gonzalaez and believed his own hype. Sometimes a loss can make you a better fighter though. He should take a break be with his family and then come back stronger hungry and motivated.
Booyahhhhhh.
Pushing it, he still has 4-5 more years to get that feria. I'm talking about Gonzales.
I see a lot of criticism towards him, but after rewatching those replays of him knocking Mares out, how can you take anything away from him? That rush style he has has worked with for over 80 percent of his career, now with Nacho, why wouldn't he perfect what has given him over over 90 percent of his wins coming via ko?
He might be past his physical prime, but he's far from being worn out.
he beat him like he stole his chiklets or his puncho
loooool
but hey, past prime or not, you know what they say, the last thing a fighter loses is his power, G still has that power.
the last thing a fighter loses is his punch. mares just got caught early by a big hitter and wasnt able to recover, it can happen to anyone.
of course he might lose to rigo and donaire who are both excellent fighters, but you cant assume he will based on one mistake against a very good fighter and puncher in gonzales. if he got taken to school, sure. if he has a history of showing poor defense, absolutey. but thats not the case, mares is still a beast. these things just happen in boxing.
Because he has gone in a campaign that proved he was never afraid to lose his "0". Not only does that assure fans that a fighter is really out there to put on a show for them, but it says alot about a fighters ambitions in the ring. Sure Rigo and Nonito werent in the tournament, but you do realize the cold war between promotional companies has spanned since before the time frame of the tournament..correct? It's a bitter sweet moment for me.. a huge abner and jhonny fan. On one hand i see Johnny rise again, his hard work and belief in himself paying off... and a loss to Mares whom was in an all time high. The best thing is that Mares will hopefully learn and grow, and we still get Jhonny in our beautiful sport for a bit longer.
That's all well in good, but none of that made him look like the world beating p4p fighter they were pretending he was

And lets not forget the fact that Marquez was past prime, slower and at a weight that he don't even belong in when he iced Pacquiao.
And lets be honest, Mayweather would have iced him as well.
Who does Johhny fight for? Zanfer or GBP?
I think he's one of those free agent fighters but his manager does business with Golden Boy. Zanfer is Top Rank but located in Mexico.
IDK why anyone ever put that much stock in him... He won a little super bantamweight tournament that didn't include the 2 best super bantamweights in it...

The way he fell for that trap was surprising. His guard was down and he was asking for that vicious left hook from an expert power puncher. A fan of both champs and a great first round KO. Hope Mares learns from this and tightens his defense. If anything i would like to see him go back to his roots, smooth and sound combination puncher.
Same here i think it has alot to do with the pressure GBP puts on its fighters to be "fan friendly" aka punching bags he completely went reckless with a K.O machine granted past it's prime but there are some guys who you cant try to be mr reckless fan friendly man as ballzy as it is it will get you ktfo.

hope we get more posts like this...
Mares for most of his career has gotten away with being reckless. I think he made the amateur mistake of not knowing what kind of puncher he had in front of him, that being the biggest puncher he's ever faced.

I thought Paulie broke it down very well in the post fight, he was marinating the left hook, he was tapping Mares with a left, trying to get him to drop his right hand, and as soon as he did the left hook was there.
It was a beautiful left hook, and set up.
I think Mares believed the b/s people kept feeding him ive seen this problem over and over again fighters are told they are way better than what they really are and believe their own hype this trumps their chances for improvement and as we saw tonight makes them reckless and is detrimental overall.

Lets be really honest. Those fight did not happen.
Looks like floyds fantasy wins are well learned tactics
