Not talking about the Ring Title but are these fights not between the best fighters in the divisions? should there not be 2 new lineages started that day?Have we ever had that on one card before?
Because I go by the true definition of "Lineal Titles" not no made up bullsh*t
And Pacquiao is the only fighter in history to have 4 lineal titles in different weight classes so I know about lineal titles
How did Kostya Tszyu become the lineal champ?
I don't think Floyd or Canelo should be #1 or #2 at 154, it should be either Lara or Molina. Floyd is the best fighter from 154 on down, and even though Canelo hasn't done much I think he would beat Lara and Molina, so in my book they're the two best fighters in that weightclass but not the most proven.
Lara has fought against P.Will, Angulo, Martirosyan, Molina, and Freddy Herandez. He went 2-1-2 (1 KO) but should really be 3-0-1 (1KO). If anyone should be fighting for a lineal title at 154 it should be him.
Four the past 4 years Pac fans have been trying to convince us the catch weight thing didn't matter. Now it's the be all end all? LOL Mayweather could turn Mother Teresa in to a hypocrite.
Pac competed for 2 WBO belts at CW, total. This fight has WBC, WBA Super, WBA Unified, Ring, every "lineal" belt you can think of. That's a whole lotta CW belts, requested by a guy that's currently a 154 "champ", who last year boasted about giving his blown up, past prime opponent Cotto 154.
The nice thing about Pac CWs is, if he wins that belt, you know he sh1ts or gets off the pot. He'll defend his belt at regulation weight, or go back down and drop the paper CW belt. If he knows he's too small for his 8th division, there's no pretense. Unlike the other guy that realized he's too small for his 5th, but didn't tell anyone for a year and kept the belt. Remember:
"I look at Miguel Cotto as an undefeated fighter because he faced Pacquiao, but Pacquiao caught him at a catch weight. He wasn't the best Miguel Cotto. He was drained. He wasn't hydrated. "
at 140 - yes....at 154 - no...canelo only beat trout who beat cotto who barely beat anyone of note at 154...and floyd only beat cotto...
it's a joke that canelo even has the ring belt to begin with...
^^^^^Couldn't have said it better then this guy
How can Pacquiao still be the lineal at 140 if he has not fought at 140 in 4 years

I dont think either fight is for the lineal title
You can't win the lineal title at a catchweight, thats a disgrace to lineal titles
And Pacquiao is the last true lineal champ at 140 when he beat Hatton and as far as I'm concerned, he still is.
How can Pacquiao still be the lineal at 140 if he has not fought at 140 in 4 years
Yea but how can Mayweather beat Winky Wright?
Winky wright was the last lineal champ at the weight but he has the wrong idea of how u establish lineal champs. Its not from being undusupted. Its from the universally accepted two best fighters in the division fighting each other. U do not have to be undisputed for that to happen. There are wayyyy too many paper champions out there who dit in belts, it'd be impossible if that was the case.

That was like 4 years ago. Damn I was still living in Humblot County at the time lol.

If Canelo/Mayweather is for the lineal belt, then Garcia/Matts should definitely be for the lineal belt.
154 lineage: Canelo/Mayweather/Cotto/Trout + plus their respective LMW resumes
140 lineage: Garcia/Matts/Khan/Peterson/Judah + plus their respective LWW resumes
Canelo/Mayweather looks like the beginning of a lineage, while Garcia/Matts looks like the completion of one.
There once was a time when a fighter only became the "lineal" champion by either beating the lineal champion or unifying all the titles so it is undisputed.
That shouldn't change.
Mayweather won the lineal welterweight title by beating Baldomir, who beat Judah, who beat C. Spinks etc. At one time all the titles were unified and undisputed.
However neither Alvarez nor Mayweather should be considered lineal light middleweight champ after the fight even if they are considered the best at the weight.
Yea but how can Mayweather beat Winky Wright?
140 lineal title is vacant, will be established on September 14th yes. No doubt.
154 lineage is a lot weaker, as theres not really been many matchups at the weight, but it is no.1 v no.2 so yes that fight will fill another vacant title. The 154 lineage will have an * next to it, reading "Established at 152 catchweight" making it lose lustre.
Theres actually not that many lineal titles out there today, here are the current ones:
175 - Stevenson (from Dawson)
168 - Ward (Vacant for Froch v Ward)
160 - Martinez (from Pavlik)
122 - Rigondeaux (from Donaire)
112 - Yaegashi (from Igarashi)
Other lineages are disputed, and thus aren't universal. Big example is Wladimir Klitschko - did Chagaev rank over Vitali? Also Floyd, whilst was the lineal 147 champion, retired it, and Mosely/Pacquiao had no clear rank over eachother. Good to see more lineal champs up and coming. Shows you just how bad the RING belt has gotten
Well Floyd is the lineal champ at 147 I don't think it is disputed at all. He got it when he beat mosely, who was lineal after his win over margarito. That was the two best fighters in the division at the time fighting. Floyd has been lineal since then. PAC has no role in this since he wasn't in the division when it happened. Which is why Floyd is almost universally accepted as lineal champ

It's hard to argue that Matthysse and Garcia aren't the top ranked fighters at 140, but because Mayweather only has one recent win at 154 he shouldn't necessarily be ranked number 1 so you can't clearly say the Canelo fight should crown a true champion.
I've thought a lot about this lately. How can we establish a new legit champion if the number 1 and 2 rankings are only decided by journalists pulling names out of their ass?
But I've proposed a solution. Check out my thread about a points ranking system for boxing and let me know what you think...
Sadly lineal titles dont mean much anymore with the abundance of catchweights, fighters moving classes, rarity of top fighters facing off, TR v GB, etc.
its hard enough to get a true champion in each class.
