Got to wondering this morning about boxing ring sizes; had a few questions:
- What are the limits allowable for boxing ring sizes? 24 or 25 feet diameter for the largest? What about the smallest ... anyone know?
- Are there any notable fights you've seen where the ring size stands out in your memory (large or small)? E.g. Didn't SRL like to ask for the biggest size permitted (vs. Duran II, Hagler) so he could prance around?
- Is there a most common size used these days?
Just curious. Any help appreciated.
Seen Ustinov recently weighed in at 283 lbs. for the Joyce fight. Might be time to think about enlarging the size of boxing rings with all these man mountains like Ivan Dychko, Big Baby Miller, Tyson Fury, Alexander Ustinov, Mariusz Wach, David Price, Willis Meehan. These mofos just keep getting bigger. When you've got guys in the ring who are like 6'9" and 290 lbs. there's no space to move.
Might be the video, to me it looks pretty damn big, particularly when the fight's started. I went and looked it up properly and it's recorded as 30 feet by other people as well. Might be the biggest ring P4P ;)
That would be the size of the ring for Mayweather vs Golovkin.
Doesn't looks 30 foot to me.

I remember reading (in George Kimball's excellent "Four Kings") that when Roberto Duran was in full beast mode and defending his title against a guy called Lou Bizzaro, that Bizzarro's management tried to aid his moving style by putting the fight in a gigantic ring that
was measured at 30 FEET.
It didn't work, Duran caught up to him and KO'd him in round 14. Still...

As there are a number of professional boxing organizations, the standards of construction vary. A standard ring is between 16 and 25 feet (4.9 and 7.6 m) to a side between the ropes with another 2 feet (0.61 m) outside. The platform of the ring is generally 3 to 4 feet (0.91 to 1.2 m) from the ground with the posts rising around 5 feet (1.5 m).
