I have a lot of respect for the old school fighters. Basilio,La Motta, etc
I also respect any fighter who takes his beating like a man. Fighters like Micky Ward and Antonio Margarito.
i respect anyone who gets in the ring, especially fighters who are able to reach the top level. it takes so much hard work and sacrifice to do so, you need to fight through so much adversity as well.
some fighters i respect more than others, hopkins is one. for the way he turned his life around at a relatively advanced age for a young fighter. the way he became an atg without having the most talent, but through hard work and dedication. he mastered his craft in a way fighters dont do anymore, which is why he is still successful way past his physical prime. just doing what hes doing at nearly 50 is incredible.
also, for a fighter to make history like he did at MW only to be robbed of his crown after all those years, TWICE! and then get robbed again for his 175lb crown only to come back stronger each time and beat even better fighters than the ones he got robbed against.
paul williams is another, never seen anyone respond to adversity that well. his career, his dream and his legs were taken from him, all in one tragic accident. yet he isnt bitter at all, he doesnt even seem upset. he just keeps rolling with the punches and makes the best of any situation. you ave to respect such mental toughness.
others include JMM, floyd, ward, pacquiao, rigo, bradley, mares etc.
if i went back in time the list would be too long, back then people were just more respectable in general imo. not just fighters.
hopkins is a another one, i have massive respect for b-hop

Was with u all the way and then u went and said it.......Margarito :nonono:
its stupid and enormously disrespectful to your future with your family and yourself. Family is the first thing that counts when being a man.
I never said it was smart. Sometimes you got to take a beating to support your family.
Khan is a good pick.
I respect Khan, he hasn't got much outside of the ring in terms of personality and so on, but he gives a 100% every fight, gets up after hard, HARD knock downs and wants to fight the best. He won't ever be the best of his generation but he is definitely the most throwback guy at 140-147 (barring may be JMM or Pac).
you do have to respect floyd though. what he has accomplished in boxing is nothing short of extraordinary and it takes a tremendous amount of character to do so. the discipline, the dedication, the sacrifices.. you have to respect that.
you have to respect the fact that hes one of the all time greats and the best of his time. also, no matter if you want to admit it or not he has taken on a lot of tough opponents, this should be obvious but somehow ppl manage to pretend otherwise.
finally lets keep in mind he has shown a lot of toughness in the ring too, another thing ppl like to pretend isnt true.
mayweather deserves as much respect as anyone in the game right now.
No one HAS to do anything. Respect isn't just about how good someone is at something, whether it be as an athlete or a person. It's a combination of things.
Examples other than Mayweather cos that argument is old and tired:
1. James Toney, terrific fighter, I'd rank him highly but I don't respect the fool, he is an illiterate piece of **** and that's fact. A drugs cheat, a thug and a trash talker with 0 charisma or wit. Very good fighter, possibly great but do I respect him? No.
2. Tony Margarito, one of the most feared punchers of his era, one of the best guys at 147 over the last decade and a beast of a man but do I respect him? Hell no, the man is an un-remorseful cheat he could have put several fighter's lives at risks with what he did. I ain't got any respect for fools like this.
I rate Floyd highly, imo not the best of his era but up there definitely, a resume lacking in great, prime or close prime opponents but that can't be helped now. do I think he is a great champion? Mostly, yes. Would I point him out to future generations as a stand up athlete and human being? No. Thus, do I respect him enough to care for what he does or how he does it? No.

Showcase of skills in an entertaining and courageous manner. I respect all fighters that are willing to engage...and have boxing skills. 2 drunks slugging it out is not too fascinating.
Boxing is not ice skating. It's a gladiator sport. We're attracted to it by the danger. Cowering from danger is not very appealing. But there's a breed of fans that view boxing differently and appreciate this cowardice. They see boxing as one guy trying to beat you up, so they root for the "poor" guy that is trying to "defend" himself.
Miguel Cotto.
Never ducked anyone, fought nothing but the best in his era, never had any excuses when he came up short and never had any asterisks attached to his name (gifted decisions in which he clearly lost, PED cheat, etc.).
its hard to have excuses when you immediately run to the dressing room after a loss.

I am not sure that taking your beating like a man is such a thing to be respected. Take a beating to chase a win, sure.
But to take a Jerry Quarry style beating in matches where you cant win and end up with dementia/Parkinsons/Alzheimers etc for life isn't being a man, its stupid and enormously disrespectful to your future with your family and yourself. Family is the first thing that counts when being a man.

I respect every boxer that has the guts too put the hard in work in for days, weeks, months even years then step in the ring and lay it all on the line. I respect floyds talent, anyone who doesn't 'don't no **** about boxing'. But the things I wrote in my post are things I don't respect about 'money may'. I don't respect theses attributes in any fighter, it's just 'pretty boy' does all these undesirable things in abundance.

Fighters I really respect are the ones that came back from defeat and overcame adversity.
My favorite fighter of all times, Muhammad Ali, takes the cake in most aspects, but there are also sides of him that were nasty and spiteful, which to new fans are mostly overlooked. For that reason, Frazier is one I respect more in terms of personality and also one I had a tremendous amount of respect for.
Currently I've got to go with Carl Froch and Mikkel Kessler. Two warriors who fight the best.
Floyd mayweather, never ducked no one, always fought the best available option, stayed humble throughout his career, has nothing but respect for the legends of the sport, never tries to elevate himself to the stature of the greats, model human being outside the ring. Perfect example and role model to young fans everywhere.
Joking right?
I sort of chuckled a bit, so hoping you are kidding!
one guy I always respected and I don't think he's been mentioned here is Frank Bruno, he took on the best heavies of his era, he wasn't good enough to beat most of them but he always gave it his all and went to war with Tyson. He was a real man.
