I liked what I saw. He probably is top 10 right now tbh. His shots to the body are nice, he's big and strong and he wasnt that slow in comparison to Maidana or Abregu.. Thurman's speed is underrated and Chaves was with him hands wise. He showed decent counter punching and also was ballsy enough and countered to the body at times with big shots. I had him winning despite Thurman looking very good. Chaves seems to be awkward with his footwork...I wouldnt say bad as Thurman AND him came from different angles but he was funky. He gassed, simple as that and Thurman read him perfectly despite the poker face and nailed him to the body as he should have. I was impressed by both a lot and think they beat a handful of good 147 pounders. They both fight in a fanfriendly style that suits other fellow 147 guys like Ortiz, Maidana, Soto, Cano, Shane, Broner, Abregu and guys from 140 who can go up. We'll see Chaves again...
Hope Thurman lands a bigger name.
Could a properly trained Chaves be a top 10 fighter today in his weight class? He was hanging on with Thurman based on talent alone.
I don't think so. Just because he tested a untested Thurman doens't make him good. Ive never been high on Thurman and from the few fights I saw of Chaves's I wasn't too impressed either. Neither of these guys have fought anyone that good, especially Chaves. Thurman's best win is his decision over Zaveck, the guy Berto stopped in 5. If Thurman's power is what people say it is he should've been able to stop Zaveck. Its not that hard to go 20-0 18kos when you don't fight anybody. Its not that they cant punch, I think they are both decent punchers, but I their records are padded.

I think he can. He gave Thurman all he could handle. Thurman had a worried look on his face at times. Props to Thurman on the win. The fight was pretty much who was gonna land that hard fight changing blow. They both came in with power. Thurman landed that great body shot and Chaves was done. He made it to the next round but was still hurting. I think he can hang with and possibly beat any of the top guys at that weight.
He needs to fine tune his style, he's still crude.. with dedication and hard training I could see him being a threat, but at this moment he's kind of a Prescott of the WW division.
He can be a very good fighter with some fine tuning, he is just so raw at this point
I can see why paulie avoided him
Malignaggi didn't avoid him, SSE made him a career high offer but Chaves's team weren't keen on fighting in Dubai and were holding out for more money. Paulie agreed to his end.

i saw his previous fights and he was almost out on his feet as well and should have lost.
his footwork is terrible.
Definite weakness. Once Thurman started to move, Chaves barely won a round. I'd like to see him fight again though, there are a lot of winnable fights for him at 147 and his style is entertaining.
I have to say that the Argentinian press has been merciless with the performance of Chaves against Thurman. I don't think he did that bad. His main problem, as someone else said in this forum, was his corner. They didn't have a Plan B after Thurman adjusted his game. I don't agree Chaves is too slow. He even outboxed Thurman in the first rounds due to his higher speed. He didn't react well to adversity, though.
He should have fought Malignaggi when he could, but it seems his team didn't like the purse and accepted Thurman instead, which was a mistake, because he would have needed some transition before that.
As I said, the sports press has eaten Chaves alive. This is not uncommon here, but there is a double standard. They almost didn't criticize Omar Narváez after his ultra-defensive display against Nonito Donaire. Narváez keeps filling arenas as if nothing had happened.
Just two analysis about Thurman - Chaves from the Argentinian press. The first one is merciless. The second one, more balanced:
Página 12: Thurman-Chaves
Clarín: Thurman - Chaves
He is entertaining, so im sure he will get alot of fights on tv in the future,,,
He is very raw, but not out of the realm to believe he could have a maidana. abregu type career...

Sure why not, I can see him giving problems to a few of the top 10. Maidana, Paulie, Guerrero. Especially if he works on his boxing skills, because he looked confused when Thurman adjusted. Another point of criticism would be his footwork , i feel he would be more effective if he moved some , rather than being a heavy plodder. He can make some noise though, Thurman was just better.
No, I didn't see anything that impressed me. Hes got power, a reasonable jab when he uses it & a tight guard but I didn't see anything that really impressed me and felt he was very limited and predictable in his approach.
He can probably get some decent wins on his power alone but I feel he anybody with any real boxing ability and a half decent beard will soundly outbox him.
Hes just too slow and crude. Wouldn't mind seeing him against Maidana actually, I feel they would match up really well and that would be brutal whilst it lasted.
hes not that good. his footwork is horrible, hes rather slow, hes a decent boxer with pop but what put him that last fight was his power and ability to take advantage of thurman's wildness.
Absolutely he could. I believe that he came very close to beating Thurman. I saw several punches thrown with KO written all over them that missed Thurman's beard by a whisker. If he had connected it would have been a short night and Chaves would be a budding star just like that. I think the loss will actually make him a better fighter now.

What's weird is that his brother (his trainer) told him "You have to fight, You didn't come here to party" in the corner during the 8th or 9th round. He might of been partying the days leading to the fight and that only happens when you have a ****ty training camp and not take what's in front of you serious enough, that plus he gassed out and got put down by a body shot in the latter part of the fight which is another sign of lack of training.
The guy is still only 25 years old and it's pretty marketable since he can easily be promoted as an " exciting fighter with KO power like the other argies". I personally enjoy those type of tensed fights at a slow pace like what we saw in Thurman vs Chaves and hope he gets his **** together and comes back and gives us some wars. :boxing:
I think he can get to top 10 pretty easy without much change at all, 147 is soft and he put on a good performance against what will be a very highly ranked guy going forward. All he has to do is beat schleps for a year or so and he will be ranked.
If he wants to do more than that yea he should find a real trainer, and put in hard work on his game while beating said schleps building a solid foundation to do better work from.
