Of course as fight fans we all have fighters who have styles we prefer. Rigio may not be everyone's cup of tea. That said the guy is coming off of his biggest win over a top 5 p4p fighter in a bout that was technical but not boring. Im was going through my HBO go app and realized HBO has had no issues bringing back plenty of guys (some that I am a fan of) that bring less excitement than Rigo did in his last fight. So why is Rigo a target all of a sudden? Is this punishment for beating a top fighter HBO has been showcasing lately? The article up about HBO now trying to make a fight for Rigo makes feel like they are making it seem like they are doing the guy a favor. He earned a spot on network tv with his performance. In fairness I'm not completely sure that this is all HBO or Top Rank using influence against the guy. I recall an interview being posted here that showed BOB Arum bashing Rigo right after the fight and Rigo calling him out on it. So is HBO "throwing up" every time his name is mentioned or did his promoter sour them on him in effort to prove a point. I just don't get it. If I was Rigo's promoter I would be talking about how he had such a virtuoso performance. Seems to me that few people actually have this great boxers best interest in mind and its a real shame. Thoughts??
Ward isn't a thriller, yet still is moreso than Rigo, and by far
not getting this thread dude, boring is boring
nobody is saying Rigo's not world class or not a legit champ
they're saying he's fucking BORING, and they're right
he can put on an exciting performance? great let's see him do it
when he does, he'll get both the respect and the love from everybody
until then? respect his skills, but fuck him, he's not entertaining
Like I said Ward is one of the guys I respect heavily in the game. I have paid money to see that man fight and even told him after the Froch fight how much I respect him. That said Ward has had more pro fights but on average I would say both guys can turn some casuals off. The point of the thread is that you rarely see a guy coming off a win over one of the top 5 guys in the world having problems getting a network fight. The timing also makes it questionable. I would kind of understand if it was after beating marroquin. But its after beating Donaire. Before Marroquin he fought Kennedy and listen to what Jim says at 21:43 . After the biggest win of his career Jim changes his tune on the fight game. I think Max at times is just as perplexed as me cause he seems to be taking up for Rigo on the broadcast.
if they are considering rigondeaux it's because they've found a matchup that will sell, or bob is persuading them that it will
like with klitschko who they dont give a crap about until they fight someone people care about(haye fight for example was bought)
you can't just buy any rigondeaux fight, because he doesn't bring in fans himself, so they need either an opponent with fans, or a highly intriguing match-up
hbo had the cardoba fight that rigo ran in, and then the donaire fight that rigo didn't throw, they are doing him a favor, because even against a top fighter, there's the chance rigo will just cause a bore-fest with no punches thrown
if no opponents, back to undercards
The guy n my sig doesnt draw fans either but never had issues getting a fight on the network. Bottom line I guy of Rigo's status shouldn't be getting that kind of treatment coming off that type of win. He elevated himself but some people make it seem like he still has not done anything. The fans the went to Radio city packed into that small venue because they knew that this was going to be Donaire's toughest test to date. Matched right there will be interest. And it has potential to build.
He's got a laundry list of things going against him, and look how well he's done for himself. Got an early title shot, good TV dates despite non TV friendly style. 12th fight a shot at p4p Donaire, for 750k! p4p Mares just won his 3rd title for 1/2 that. It took Donaire years of toiling to reach that.
That's probably all there is to it, Rigo's purse demands are beyond what HBO wants to pay, given the comp available at the weight. If he'll fight for 250k, HBO would probably welcome him.
Im a big Ward fan and he has not provided any more (or less) excitement than Rigo. Ward was exciting in destroying Dawson but in general I like watching him for things that are more subtle than knockouts. Rigo can be exciting against guys like Kennedy (who is no dawson) but put forth a technical performance against other fighters. People exaggerate when they talk about certain fighters being boring.

Rigo needs to attract fans, simple as that. The masses want to be entertained, and it's their/our right to spend their/our money elsewhere if the fighter is not providing it.

Devon Alexander got mad push from HBO and is getting dates with ShowTime
agreed on this one, Alexander the twat is a waste of time now
before, HBO was right to get excited about the guy
he was a youngster they could groom to be a star then
after the Kotelnik, Bradley, Lucas, and Bailey debacles?
surprised he has any deal at all now, he's just getting fed to Khan
but at the very least, it's fun watching him get beaten up

Devon Alexander got mad push from HBO and is getting dates with ShowTime
He's also American (a local draw, rare!), and is a welter titleholder. Welter is always on TV. 122 is never on HBO until Donaire crossed over from Showtime/Pinoy Power
The denial is what gets me. You don't need to take anyone's word. Just hear the non-stop booing. They're not anyone's friends and relatives here. Nobody knows them. They're the ones paying for these fights. Without them you won't even get to see any boxing at all.
Has anyone from HBO publicly stated they don't want Rigondeaux? All I've heard is comments from bob arum and Rigo's manager responding to bob arum's statements.
That makes me uncomfortable too as I stated in the OP. I think that if Anything Arum might have soured them on Rigo. I wouldn't expect them to come right out and say they want/don't want the guy and thats why Bob might be able to play it off as such. Good point.
neither of those guys are known as all around crowd pleasers
but they've both provided more excitement than Rigo has
Rigo just had his 1st big fight, and he stunk out the joint
he won clearly, but he failed to capture anybody's imagination
he's at a make or break point now that he's champ at 122
do something with it, or bore audiences in small ass auditoriums

:biggthump BEAT ME TO IT. Both guys I admire that are no more exciting. It odd that a guy gets shunned after such a victory. Maybe before his last fight HBO could have pulled this but not after. The timing makes no sense and seems more like sour grapes.
And Devon Alexander got mad push too.
Rigo is Cuban, he doesn't speak English and he stopped the Donaire hype train which cost Arum and HBO a lot of money.
why are people making such a big deal outta this?
Rigo is good, undefeated, a world champ, just beat a top fighter
but the bottom line is, the guy is boring as fuck
if you're boring, it doesn't matter how good you are, nobody cares
if HBO doesn't see $ signs with a guy, they're not gonna showcase him
if Rigo wants to keep winning, don't change a thing
if he wants to win and be a star, he better up the thrill factor
Exactly. He needs to create excitement like Bernard Hopkins and Andre Ward

HBO probably low balled Arum so he went ahead and said those comments to put pressure on HBO to have him on the network with more $$$$ because the people started demanding it.
Another scenario is Rigo didn't like the offer Arum gave him so Arum started those rumors of HBO vomiting to get Rigo in line to the $$$ offered like "See you can't go anywhere else so take the $$$".
It's all politics imo.

I was thinking about this and HBO did ban the klitskos to because they are so boring so at least rigo isnt being singled out right?
The Bros also have the competition issue. Rigo fought and beat Donaire who hbo was very high on. The bros should be on HBO for certain marque fights. HBO bought Wlad vs Haye because its a marque fight. They should also buy Vit vs Stiverne since he has been on their airwaves recently. Also the Bros have there own network deals that are more important to them than HBO. Rigo doesn't have this as he fights in the US. If the Bros fought in the US in Vegas or somewhere were the network could broadcast live during prime time then I think we would see more of them. That wouldnt make sense for them since they are huge in Europe and have big network deals there. The Bros don't depend on US networks like someone in Rigo's situation.
