You don't have to be able to punch, and be a warrior for promoters and fans.... you have to be sellable....
Look at guys like Malignaggi.... Malignaggi is not half the fighter or puncher that Rigo is.... but he can sell, he talks, he wears ridiculous outfits and apparently women find him attractive....
Rigo is as entertaining as any 'boxer' out there.... Rigo is as entertaining as Pernell Whitaker, and he can punch a lot harder.... but he doesn't have the 'personality' to sell himself.... and I guess that's partly because of his age... he's stubborn, he doesn't want to learn English or act like a clown....
He should make a deal with ESPN FNF.... Fight every 3 months, all the hardcore fans will be tuning in no matter what....
Please stop crying. Its not the end of Rigos career. HBOs not the only game in town. Theres Showtime, Fox, ESPN, NBC Sports and other networks. Its not like Rigo has to go work at Wal-Mart or some where like that. He will bounce back.
espn main events pay 10 grand. once in a blue moon they will go over that slightly.
Rigo is f uckin' hilarious he has a lot of charisma believe it or not. The age thing is not it or that he's boring. It's that nobody can conpete with him 12 fights into his career and he's beat probably the best fighter he'll ever face 12 fights in!!! Give Rigo 30+ fights and his skill will sell itself. Rigo is scary good this early into his pro career. Basically...he possibly peaked BEFORE becoming known as opposed to getting known with 20-30 wins and become the kingpin everyone wants to see. Instead he beat a stud who himself was barely on the cusp of stardom now people will just have that "yeah you beat a stud..and?" attitude.
I bet Bob Arum doesnt think Rigondeaux understands english period, That might be why he had no problem disrespecting him to his face. This is another thing that makes Bob Arum easy to hate, other than the boxing robberies that have happened in Top Rank boxing.

Interesting read....
But Rigos problem is that he's ...
B-O-R-I-N-G
spin it any way you like to, that the major issue. He can't just cater to the hardcore boxing crowd.
Canelo doesn't speak English.
Unlike Rigo Canelo has a legion of rabid fans along with an entire country who will come out and buy tickets to his fights along with ppv buys. If Rigo had the following Canelo does HBO would jump all over him. I respect Rigo's skills and craftsmanship, but truth be told, he does nothing in terms of drawing interests from the casual fan base.
You've got to have something. Paulie punches like a girl but he's ultra aggressive. Floyd & Bhop are absolute bores but they talk a good game and people tune in to see them KO'd. Rigo is like a fly on the wall. People would watch him fight a star...just to see how the star would cope with this defensive challenge.
He needs to be an inside fighter. I think he has good enough defense to fight in the pocket, but he doesn't want to do it. People like to compare him to Floyd, but Floyd can fight in the pocket and he even lure some of his opponents to fight him in the pocket a few times.

I'm sorry, did HBO figure out these three things about Rigo AFTER he whopped their possible cash cows ass, or maybe they knew these things already when they were airing his previous fights?
ignorant post
its as simple as this.
Rigo is gonna expect to make 750k checks everytime now and he just isnt worth that much.
HBO is not going to pay him big money just because he is a great boxer, he has to make them money. He will not bring in new subscribers, he does not have a fan base, and his fights are not TV friendly.
It very simple.
If rigo is willing to get paid 120k and be on the undercard of fights then I bet HBO will have no problem putting him back on the air.
true that...

His promoter and HBO and boxing fans are dumb..that is why he is hard to sell. Has nothing to do with his English or how handsome YOU think he looks.
Many fighters at the top of their weightclasses don't speak english & draw well... In the hurt game it's all about making money & putting fans in the seats... Who gets all excited when you hear his name?
