He was good, but he could be preachy at times.
Ward is as good as any fighter-commentator. Fighter-commentators generally aren't very good though. Lampley, Steward, and Merchent was the best team, but Manny is dead, Larry is senile, and Lampley is developing some old-man ways himself (talking over people, etc.)
I agree whoever it was that SRL was a good commentator, as was Tarver.
They couldn't control Big George because Big George did not need HBO little pay checks compared to what he was making from his Foreman Grills. Big George use to always put Merchant and Lampley in their place and I am sure they hated that.
nah, roy jones is the best fighter-to-commentator ever imo
This^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
His commentary in tito-mayorga was dead on,, calling the body shot ending, about 5 rounds before it happened,,,
Also was great in the morales-manny 1 fight....
Lampley and merchant all on manny's nuts and roy saying..."Manny dont like this, he aint use to a guy taking his punches, Morales showing him up"
Larry coming back with "Roy i think you are overstating it abit.."
Roy "YOu aint never boxed before, if you had you know what im talking about""
Classic roy... My favorite commentator
Foreman was never bias??? WTF are you talking about, Foreman has a dildo named Oscar de la Hoya.
Right. If people want more evidence of George being VERY BIASED, they should youtube the Hopkins-Trinidad fight. George was so over the top in favor of Tito that it was ridiculous
Paulie Malinaggi is not only the best analyst, but very articulate with his words. I think he has Roy beat. Roy seemed to get worse since he became a religious fanatic.
Anyway people still think Foreman was the best, do they not remember his famous line before Jones vs Ruiz?
the guy was gold
anybody else liked him?
i think hes better than jones, lewis and paulie although hes on showtime
I think because he spoke his mind I recall he stated that the Mosley vs Delahoya 2, Mayweather vs Castillo 1 and another robbery involving Lenox Lewis were a disgrace to the sport of Boxing
Foreman Is loaded so he didn't need HBO as much as other boxers so foreman called the fight however he saw with no bias filters. I hated how he'd think ever fighter was in trouble even if they wasn't but he was a good commentator imo.

He was not fired he left, HBO was about to renew his contract he opted out, Foreman was the guy back in the 90s who got people interested in HBO boxing if you recall Foreman became a different man he was a teddy bear always smiling and family friend opposite of his angry snarling younger self. Foreman was very popular in his later years mainstream america loved him
Forman was tired of Larry Merchant and Jim Lampley used to argue with him a lot, just watch the Barrera vs. Hamed fight.
Also he was filthy rich and got tired of traveling back and forth from his Houston Texas home.
I miss Big George though, I loved his laughter every time Prince Naseem came on the scene he loved the Prince and Oscar De La Hoya.
Anyone noticed how the majority of HBO guys are biased, while Showtime stays neutral?
Lampley and Foreman and Merchant never shy away from expressing their like of a certain fighter.
From what I remember, HBO didn't get rid of him. I recall George saying on air he was leaving because he wanted to spend more time with his family.
Foreman often had disagreements with Lampley and Merchant (on and off air), but I don't think that had anything to do with George's departure from the network.
Paulie has had some jabs at Bernstein (sp?) similarly. Esp with regards to Berstein biased scorecards. Have to admire the guys that don't get played the fool. Not good for job security though!
Foreman wasn't overly biased like most commentators and he didn't follow Lampley and Merchants lead and agree with them like everyone else does even when Lampley and Merchant were completely wrong.
Correct. Merchant suffered some memorable cutoffs. Rather than wait for Merchant to finally spit out his words, Foreman would strike him down. Sometimes rude...but dead air is rude too.
I see why, he used to shoot down the old fossils bull****. I bet Merchant and Lampley went home crying after every fight.
he was their best friend during the golota/bowe riot!
