Where do you rank Larry Holmest at HW all-time? I was recently thinking about his "Rocky Marciano couldn't hold my jock strap." comment, and got to thinking. Where does he rank all-time? I would put him top 10 for certain. What hurts him though, is that he was champion against very weak opposition, IMO. And then, back-to-back losses to a blown up Michael Spinks really start to make you wonder.
So where do you rank him all time at HW?
larry holmes aka the bitterest mofo ever
larry shoulda fought george foreman.
Wouldn't you be?
Arguably the best skilled heavyweight of all times, but never got the attention or accolades he deserved. Not until he was almost done anyway.
Got around to watching the first Holmes/Spinks fight, and I must say: Anyone who thinks Holmes was robbed is blind. Spinks clearly won that fight. And in what akward fashion! He was slipping in and out of Holmes' reach, and landing punches from very strange angles, often off balance. What a masterful performance. He made Holmes look ordinary.
Larry was looking for one big shot all night, and it didn't come. Props to Spinks for that performance. If only he had fought that way against Tyson!
It was the second one that was the robbery. The first fight could have gone either way imo.

Admittedly, I've only watched the Spinks-Holmes fights once each. As I recall, the first fight I scored for Spinks in a razor-thin decision. The second I thought Larry won. I'll have to rewatch those fights to see. He's certainly top 10. I'd put the following in front of him:
1)Ali
2)Louis
3)Lewis
4)Foreman (Due to his incredible 80's comeback)
and 5)Holmes
I think Lennox Lewis also edges him out, due to the fact that he beat much stiffer competition. Granted, he does have two KO losses against him, but he just beat that much better opposition. Just my $0.02.
Eh Liston and Dempsey over guys like Lewis, Johnson, Charles, Foreman, Holyfield etc? Based on what exactly?
Based on I'm an old mother fvcker lol. But I agree, those spots could easily be swapped out and I wouldn't put up much of a fight.
1 Ali
2 Louis
3 Holmes
4 Liston
5 Dempsey
He's in my top 3, but that could change as my mood does. I've been to a ton of alphabet soup boxing conventions, and this question comes up all the time. A lot of people you run into at these things have Holmes as their #1 all time heavy, and it's not that ludicrous of an opinion.

I agree with the top three. But there is a large gap between #2 and the rest of the heavyweight division.
I think Holmes was one of the best heavyweights ever, it is sad he was so unappreciated and stuck in Ali's shadow. I think if Holmes and Ali had fought in their primes Holmes had a good chance of beating him.
i think prime ali boxes circles around him.
maybe post suspension ali, larry can beat.

For real though, has there ever been a heavyweight with a jab as good as Holmes? I don't think so.
i'll take liston's even if it's slower.
looked like it had more power.
power is EVERYTHING in my world.
Head to head he is probably a top 5 HW. On achievements he is a top 10 dude. Great fighter. Brilliant jab, good hand speed, good chin, and ring IQ. Foot speed was not
Ali-esque but who is?
probably in the top ten ever, behind Ali, Louis, and Dempsey. I'd rank him ahead of Marciano, and the Lewis-Holyfield-Tyson triumvirate, maybe on par with Foreman.
3rd, behind Ali and Louis.
20 title defenses from 1978-85. As for his opposition, he defeated seven boxers who held a portion of the title at some point in their careers during his reign as champ. It wasn't elite by any means, but he didn't just dispose of tomato cans.
Holmes was already 28 when he won the title and was past his prime for Spinks, he had already shown a noticeable decline for a couple years before that. Holmes from 77-82 had incredible physical ability, great foot and hand speed. Had one of the best jabs ever seen in the division and a brilliant 1-2 combo. Showed an ability to recover from some wicked shots, the 2nd Shavers fight being the best example. Knew how to effectively tie up fighters on the inside. His weakness in his prime was a tendency to have lapses in concentration during fights, he would relax and take a shot that had business landing.
All time great fighter who is underrated in terms of the legacy he has left in the general boxing publics mind
