There's no way Froch-Ward II sells out Wembley. LOL.
Froch is popular, but he can't fill 80,000 seats! Especially when fighting Andre "The Clincher" Ward.
Totally agree with this, i've said elsewhere something very similar... Kessler sells more tickets abroad than Ward ever would.
I think a lot of people say 'you gotta fight in USA to be big' is because a lot of Americans simply don't travel abroad to fights so their fighters stick to their home country. Granted it does have a bigger tv audience but gate figures are aweful.
Like the gate for Matthysse (sp?) vs Peterson which included another world title fight sold what 5k tickets? Its crazy!
It's a tough break for ward cause he's basically cleaned out his division and beaten everybody there is to beat and he can't seem to find a big fight for himself. Gold medalist, just a true talent and he's been getting ragged on for not being "popular" enuff. Ward should just say screw it and take the fight with Froch in the uk. Get himself a good payday and beat him again.
I'm pretty sure that Ward has only beaten about 2 or 3 of the current top 10 SMW. He's got plenty of options, there's always someone else to fight.
What he says about having to go to the USA to be a star may have some truth to it but it's not the be all and end all it was a few years ago. Apart from Mayweather there isn't a big American star in boxing right now, sure America still produces good fighters but it seems the well of stars has dried up in the last 5 years or so. If Ward doesn't want to leave the US then he should fight either Hopkins or Dirrell.
Agreed but it doesn't necessarily apply to this situation. Fights that happen in Vegas or Madison square garden have a lot of significants but not anywhere else.
In some ways correct, but Froch has already been there a couple of times and now he is a star.
this right here.
Ward is the only fighter in the super six who didnt leave his hometown.
why is he so afraid to leave oakland?
yeah that's wack. Ward is a hell of a fighter. Doesn't get his just do. All he's done is fight EVERYBODY in his weight class and beat them
Lie i posted in another thread, ward is 29 hes got chocolate, GGG, chavez jr, when they arrive or move up. Froch is 35 and just gettin his due and that due is as number 2.
Hes right. I know some wanna say its not true but it is.
Froch dream is to headline a vegas fight. Vegas is in america so he knows.
But if he wants to stay in UK, collect some cash, to finish off career thats cool but dont call him the best at SMW....ever.
I don't understand how the undisputed champ at SMW gets shyt on for not being a star. yeah that's wack. Ward is a hell of a fighter. Doesn't get his just do. All he's done is fight EVERYBODY in his weight class and beat them

well he's wrong
Well, he's right. You can't just stay in England if you want to be a star world wide. You do have to come to America :usa2:, that's all there is to it. That said, Ward did say he was willing to come to the UK. I give him the benefit of the doubt, but the UK needs to step up and give pay him right if he is to do that. Ward is still the #1 guy out there.
A lot of guys overseas sell out more than the guys here in the US. Look at Martinez for example, he's not a star here in the US but look at his numbers for his last fight.

Alvarez and Cotto are boxing stars here states side. All you have to do is look at the ratings and PPV numbers to support that. In addition to boxing fans their own countrymen can easily point them out of a crowd and give them the celebrity treatment. Now, crossover mainstream stars that the general public know? That's Pacquaio and Mayweather.
Ward is neither, he is known primarily only to hardcore boxing fans but the same goes for Hopkins, Nonito, Martinez, Mares, Broner, Guerrero, etc.
Mike Tyson, George Foreman, and Muhammad Ali are still bigger stars here in the US than any current active boxer.
And that's why Ward needs to go ahead and make his bones in the UK. As a business man however the exchange rate (right now) doesn't benefit fighting in the UK or Denmark. (.77 € : $1 and .66£ : $1) . Just saying, Eddie Hearn needs to realize that open up the pocketbook to get Ward over there.
Good post. I think you've summed it up well.
The funny thing is I follow Ward's twitter and it's almost always UK fans tweeting him with messages of support. It's the same for Malignaggi to an even greater extent. They've actually taken on mini-fanbases overseas after boxing against UK fighters, that's why we always hear Ward talk about the UK fans.
Ward interview with Sky's Adam Smith.
Lets see Andre you won a Gold Medal, won The Super 6 and 99% of The Untied States doesn't know who you are. Even an Amateur like Chavez Jr has more of a fan base than you so I guess America isn't working out to great for you. Now if you count Oakland as your America than your a big star
