I noticed this when I rewatched the fight the other night. He had a small, yet visible, Puerto Rico flag on his trunks for both fights against Morales and his fight with Khan. Personally, I don't care much about it but it made me wonder why he did not have it this time.
I have read about some professional boxers having accounts and posting on internet forums and, not too long ago, there was a debate about whether or not García should be considered PR or not. It may be a longshot but perhaps he read or heard something that bothered him so he decided to stop having the flag there.
This is not to stir up stuff since, like I said, I don't care about it but I was curious considering the aforementioned recent debate.
Here's the thing about DLH. He was actually involved (for a lack of better words) with the people he repped. He even went into the music industry and sang in Spanish. When I didn't know better I couldve sworn the guy was actually Mexican but of course I found out later he was Mexican American.
I'm willing to bet my bottom dollar that if you ask Garcia or Rios something about the PR/Mexico history they couldnt tell ya.

You didnt know Oscar was Mexican-American? So you thought he won his gold medal for Mexico. You think the Mexican people wouldve named him the Golden Boy? Now if his name was El Oro de Nino or something like that than I could see why you wouldve that that.
I think is fine for mexicans and puerto ricans to rep rios or garcia.. At the end of the day if they are not mexican and puerto rican what are they then. In america what are they perceived as? If u see rios on the street or garcia? If some one sees there last name on a job application? Im sure they grew up eating food from there countries, listening to music from there country and when someone ask them what they were in school, Im sure they said mexican and puerto rican not american..
I will never understand why rios isnt mexican enuff or garcia isnt boriqua enough...
I was extremely saddened when Shane Mosley stopped wearing the Korean flag.

Personally, I felt Shane turned his back on his people. Smh
Shane Mosley is part Korean?

I am not sure either, to be honest. The truth is Danny, like many people born in the US with ethnic background or ties to another country, is an impossible situation.
He can claim to be from Philly, therefore angering those who want to claim him
Or
He can claim to be from PR, step in PR, and find out very quickly that he's not PR as people raised in the island, and have his credentials questioned.
Take a proud Mexican American to some town in Veracruz; very quickly he'll have his credentials and his own sense of mexicanness questioned.
Its really an impossible situation made worst by people who take it too seriously. So, its best to let Danny decide if he wants to identify with either of them, any, or maybe both.
As far as I can tell he's a solid boxer, potentially the best at 140, and a good guy. The rest is up to him.
Boxing is a business and DLH is a rich man because he knows how to maximize commercial potential. There's a reason why he's a millionaire but I think this nationality thing is a personal choice. It benefits fighters business-wise but if it's fake it will be known in the end. Anyways, I wish Danny García a lot of luck in the ring and I enjoy his fights. After all, that's what I look for.

Reminds me of when Rios fought on the Spanish channel then was interviewed in Spanish and didn't know WTF they were saying.
So yea, you're right.

His people probably advised him to start repping it so he can attract more fans especially PRs.

This is another topic but now that it's mentioned I think it would be interesting to know. I never watched a GarcÃ*a fight before the first one with Morales. I did not even know him prior to 2012.
Just look up pics or his fight videos and skim thru them.
The guy above said it best, these guys (Rios and Garcia) were most likely advised to rep their "flag".

My sense is that Danny is Philly bred and proud of it. I've never heard him speak Spanish. Its not really that wasn't born in PR, its more that he thinks of himself as Philly until Golden Boy told him to push his PRness. Rios, as counterpoint, thinks of himself as Mexican so that's it.
Good for Danny. Philly has a long tradition of boxing.
Oscar mentioned trying to take him to PR, which is absurd. Its like taking Mike Alvarado to Mexico City.
Nationalism and ethnic identity have a long history in boxing; it can be fun if done properly. I don't particularly care. A good boxer is a good boxer.

Good for Danny. Philly has a long tradition of boxing. And honestly, who cares?
Oscar mentioned trying to take him to PR, which is absurd. Its like taking Mike Alvarado to Mexico City. There's no such thing as "PR" or "Mexican" blood. Its all made up. If a fighter is attracted to the idea, good; if he's not, then who gives a crap?

Personally, I have favorite boxers from different countries and think the nationalism crap is secondary, but some others take that too seriously.
Way too serious.
Yeah, I don't understand that logic. He's PR by blood, and fights like a warrior. If you're Puerto Rican, why wouldn't you be a fan?
He's from Philly, and not from the islands, so what???

I see you get the meaning of the thread and I think that is the general sentiment. I am okay with him and consider myself somewhat of a fan but I am curious about this. I know Malignaggi lives and dies for twitter but I don't know how much a guy like García reads or listens to fans or detractors.

He's the new Oscar Delahoya. Most PR's probably see him as americanized, and not a true PR fighter like Tito or Cotto, since he's not from the islands.

So what..big deal.
I see some replies that show that, apparently, the title was read but not the actual post. I just wanted to see if anyone saw the possibility of an internet forum debate/argument influencing a fighter's decision regarding something, however trivial that may be.
