Trainer Virgil Hunter feels Amir Khan needs to commit to the United States full-time if he is to become a world champion again.
Khan had his first fight on British soil in two years on Saturday in Sheffield when he overcame a knockdown to post a unanimous, if narrow, points victory over Mexican fighter Julio Diaz.
The 26-year-old is now targetting a rematch with Danny Garcia, who knocked Khan out in the fourth round of their WBC light-welterweight title fight in July 2012.
But Hunter says Khan must spend more time around his San Francisco training base if he is serious about getting himself back among the sport's elite fighters.
First it was Freddie and then it was Garcia. Now Virgil Hunters is the man but his shine is going to be short lived. He can't improve Khan the way he says and I like Khan. He is what he is. Angulo is gonna get abused by Lara and Berto will be another failure. Ward is a beast and just cuz Virgil trains him, doesn't mean he's a beast of a trainer.
Khan could sleep in the same bed as Hunter and it won't be worth a damn.
Khan is not an elite fighter period, no matter how much his daddy and all the other yesmen in his life tell him that he is.
:rofl::rofl::luvbed:
I think this is the only way to go because I don't see much improvement from current amount of training that Khan gets. If he wants to gain world title again he has to be with Hunter all the time. It's sacrifice he has pay.

This is why I dislike Khan
Yes the kid has heart in the ring
But if you are only training for 3 months and in between not working on ur flaws then you don't deserve anything and also u wonder why ur flaws such as not being able to defend a ****ty hook arise
You gotta commit to training full time, that means training full time, you spend 6 months ironing out the basics, I guarantee you will come out a better fighter
If that Diaz fight didn't put any sense in him then he deserves to be knocked out
It goes back to his work ethic and the fact he doesn't train enough like most world-class fighters. Training much more will basically wipe the old programs/habits from his brain and replace them with new programs/habits. That's basically what it boils down to.
I'm actually very surprised he got as far as he did with so much downtime between camps - it's pretty shocking that he only trains 20 weeks each year. Most dedicated world-class fighters rarely spend a full week away from the gym. Khan will need to change that quickly if he's serious about improving.
In the post fight conf, Khan said he trains no more than 20 weeks each year, only when it's fight time. I think Hunter is right, that type of training is all wrong for someone who needs to compete with the best and be a world champ again. Khan needs to dedicate himself full-time, to start with he should implement a 2-year plan where he is based full-time in the USA and see if things improve which I think they will.
Hunter is right about this, Khan is going to be forget the things he learns during his time away from the gym so he'll always stay at this level unless he dedicates himself like a proper world-class fighter.
Doesn't make any difference who trains him and where he trains at this stage, he has too many weaknesses and will never change, if anything he actually looked worse on Saturday. He is a good fighter but will never be among the elite and should be nowhere near a title shot on the basis of fighting 2 little fellas like Molina and Daiz. Garcia or Matthysse will both KO him and i can see Peterson stop him in a rematch as well.
If Khan had stayed in the UK and gone to Rob McCracken early in his career rather than playing charlie big spuds in the US then he might well be a far more rounded fighter today, but Khans own delusions of grandeur has been his undoing.
Won't make much of a difference.
Would it help to be there and to do more training? Of course. However, his defence won't be fixed, his chin won't improve and he is stupid which prevents him from fighting smart.
He should be living near Hunter if he really wants Hunter to be his trainer, but he is not a world class fighter and won't be with that chin. Hunter can't fix that.
He may pick up a world title against a weak champion, but this talk of Mayweather or whatever needs to end now. He is a guy with fast hands and a jello chin, and every opponent will know that coming into the fight now.
Khan can live in Hunter's basement but I don't see how he will improve. Regardless of how good your defence is you are going to get hit at one point even Whittaker used to get hit which is why he has slow speech right now. Problem is Khan can't take a punch because he's just the way he is, it's natural, you either are built that way or you are not. Khan's career will only proceed as a result of careful match making but any competitive fight he's going to be knocked out. I hope he fights Danny because he wont see the 12th round and will have to come back to the UK to rebuild against a bum then go back again to the USA.
Hunter said: "I'm convinced now that in his own mind Amir knows he's got to work more and come to the gym more, and that he can't just go off between fights.
"Amir has to acknowledge that right now he is at a disadvantage because of the distance between us.
"I see Amir for three months when he comes over here, so the opposition can creep ahead of you because all the top fighters are with their trainers all the time.
"It is something we are going to work on to see if we can bring him up to the level we need him to be at."
