I said some. Oscar, Floyd and Roy were all massively hyped fighters. And they were all at least a class above what canelo is at when they were his age.
See, all those guys had extensive amateur careers, thats where they get to learn their craft, where they correct mistakes and find what they need to improve on. Thats over 100+fights for experience, and top level Olympians. Canelo has been for the most part learning from his pro career, thats a very hard thing to do, and i have to say he's doing well so far.
Rocky Juarez was on a lot of Floyd undercards. Too many IMO. Didn't make him a star.
You could be given the opportunity to become a star in boxing, but if you don't have it, you won't make it. Canelo definitely has it.
Truth right here
Two big TV companies in Mexico that broadcast boxing are competing against each other.
One promotes the son of the legend, Chavez Jr, the other a young kid that can be in a novela.
The fans in Mexico first started arguing who was the bigger joke.
Chavez Jr signed with TR and starts fighting more in the US. The rivalry between Chavez and Canelo is brewing in Mexico.
Oscar immediately signed Canelo. His name is still tie to Chavez Jr.
WBC give both of them a free shot at the title. The hate begins.
Both gain haters and fans on their way up. Canelo being more likeable and respectful towards the sports gain him more respect.
GBP ties Canelo name to Floyd. Top Rank try to tie Chavez Jr to Cotto in fight talking and to Pac with their sharing of trainer.
Chavez lost his most important fight, Canelo won it.
Both kids are popular and cash cow. It is not usual to get Mexicans in those weight classes that are successful. Their promoters are doing a great job.
Homeboy said it best
Marketing I guess..... on a lot of Floyd undercards.... and he has performed well enough for fans to get behind him...

At 22 Oscar De La Hoya had only beat a few undersized vets (Ruelas, Hernandez, Molina) and gotten a close, probably gift decision vs John John Molina (average champ contender). Canelo has beaten those same type of fighters as well as true champ at 154 Trout (who in my mind has staying power and will rebound). Floyd had only beaten Genaro Hernandez (Fading Champion). Look at Cotto's ascension and he didn't get a shot until he was older (also had tough fights with Pinto and Torres which but doubt in him).
Not to diminish the accomplishments of either of the other three, because they are great and went on to do even greater things. But at this stage in their careers, Canelo is far more advanced, having faced more former and current champions than either.
The big difference is amateur background, those guys had Olympic experience. To me, that's why canelo is so popular, his amateur career was actually a pro career which has seen him televised for years now. And most importantly, he has won all his fights. Until Trout (which I think he won close but clear), nothing has ever even been disputed either.
His trajectory is ridiculously fast, the question is can he take the next step, solid title defenses and then dethroning a ppv king? I'm not sure.
White skin , red hair , young age and being Mexican .
and all are not related to Boxing abilities , which is limited to this point of his career
he is like a mannequin , but he has only one advantage in my eye , it is calmness . I feel he is wise , or may be pretend to be wise , who knows !
u can think all u want. but saying what u are saying is wrong. if u think trout is better than genaro then u better have something to back it up. if all u got is "he looked like a better fighter" or "he lost to oscar first" then u clearly dont know what u are talking about.
floyd fans are ****in pathetic, lol, genaro hernandez el chicanito is not near or anywhere near a decent victory, canelo mighta aswell say mosley was a great victory, floyd fans think flouyd beating mosley was great, thats ****in preposterous, canelo mighta aswell say beating sorry azz baldomir and corley was good for canelos resume aswell, canelo mighta aswell say beating cintron was a great win aswell, genaro and cintron, mosley, baldomir are pieces of sh1t wins for each fighter, lol, trout is simply a prime version of whatever version of trout is, genaro was finished and he sukked
Its because he's unique, a Mexican redhead boxer, who also has boxing craft, people like uniqueness. Kind of like what happened with Amir Khan, a British-Pakistani boxer, something which was never seen before the kid was selling out arenas since his first fight.
In Mexico and with Mexicans. Not with everyone. Mexicans will support a good Mexican fighter all day every day. Loyal group of fans. But Canelo could walk down the street in most cities in America and wouldn't be known by a soul.
Not many Mexicans in America?
Hes Mexican, you can turn any decent Mexican into a star with the right backing, the Mexican people spend the most $$$$ on this sport and they support their fighters 100%
You are the one who is sad with your superiority complex. When I have an opinion you don't like you become rude and insulting. I know about Hernandez and I saw him fight many times. He was 32 years old and about done when Mayweather destroyed him. He quit on his stool to Mayweather the same way he had quit to Oscar. He never fought again after the loss to Mayweather so that should tell you he knew himself he did not have it anymore. Trout is prime and 27 and had never lost. I think the 27 year old Trout is a better fighter than the 32 year old Hernandez. If you don't want to debate this then don't.

the public chooses their charismatic heroes / leaders.
canelo's got "it"
"it" is what the public dictates. he fills a need. many of the mexican greats in the past have been hard as nails, from rough backgrounds, and heralded chiefly for their courage. they were underdogs. they appealed to underdogs. alvarez' image is more of a clean cut, "pretty boy" type of a fighter. his appeal to the middle class is probably responsible for a big part of his following.
he's got a face like elvis, red hair, and he's mexican. he speak well. he's learning english. the kid's got "it."
i don't know what else to tell you. some people are popular, and it goes beyond what they accomplish.
