I don't see too many paths to victory for Rigondeaux.
I am a big fan of Rigondeaux more so because of principle. His boxing style, footwork, defense and craft are impressive. I'd like to see a guy with this style get more shine. But when you REALLY look at Rigo, and don't let his immaculate balance, footwork and speed blind you, there are some flaws that are all tailor made for Donaire to exploit.
- He likes to counter by stepping in with the left upper cut with his right hand WAY too low
- He winds up most of his punches (telegraphs)
- He doesn't really have a good right hook
- He doesn't really have a good jab
I am very scared for him should he get into a fire fight with Donaire because he actually is fairly easy to hit when in exchanges because of his low right hand.
He is almost completely dependent upon his ability to counter Donaire and the WAY he typically counters leaves himself open for the left hook. Donaire also has great power with his right hand.
I'm a fan of Donaire, but I'd like to see Rigo win, but the purely rational side of me actually says Rigo gets knocked out the more I really think about this fight.
If Rigondeaux is effectively assertive as he was against Teon Kennedy I feel such an excellent execution of defensive dominance will enable him to impose his superiority over Donaire
Teon Kennedy???? :buttkick:
I agree with Tom Cruise's game plan. Rigo should look to make the fight a bit boring and force Donaire to open up. Like I said, his main path to victory is a counter shot. So the more aggressive he can make Donaire without engaging TOO much the better.
I haven't been this hype for a fight in a very long time.
Agree again. This could be the reason he's been so much more talkative....
He needs Donaire to be taking the lead. If it doesn't work, he's got very little chance. He has to get Donaire into an aggressive mode opening and leading. Donaire has been playing this role more and more often, falling into the expectations the crowd wants, and this will help Rigo greatly because, despite what people think, Donaire still doesn't see this fight being his biggest, or second biggest, nor his toughest.
It's going to be a fascinating fight....but it could turn out to be a massive overreaction to Rigo too. Lets truly hope not.
well narvaez had that tight high guard going on so it was hard for donaire to get any punches in whereas rigo keeps his right arm dangerously low which almost invites that left hook from donaire. plus narvaez has a good chin too (never been dropped or stopped as a pro or amateur) ..
I can almost guarantee that they will get that tightened up for this. If we can see that I know that a professional trainer can see it and Pedro Diaz is a very good trainer.

Very, very true. It's his right hand that worries me more than anything, and his biggest flaw plays right into Donaires biggest strength. It really is a recipe for disaster. I've said this all along, but without his right hand, he doesn't have nearly as great of a chance as people imagine and because of his pro inexperience he hasn't learned that it really can spell disaster.
Donaires counter left hooks are perfectly timed against a southpaw coming in with a straight left and he's had the experience of doing it against a pro of the highest elite level. What's interesting is that Rigo actually telegraphs his left hand power shot nearly as bad as Darchinyan and we all saw what happened there. One thing that's just as bad, if not worse, is that he loves to go to the body with it. He doesn't set it up with a feint or jab though and he doesn't keep his right hand up. He drops it, keeps his chin high and going to the body like he does completely opens him wide up to a .... You guessed it folks!
The obvious difference is the aggression of Vic compared to Rigo though, which is what will help Rigo more. It's still his main, nearly only, punch though and you don't win if you don't punch.
The biggest issue is that, just like Vic, Rigo is too left hand dominant. Vic learned his lesson and brought his right hand back in and pulled his defense in, but Rigo is still in that phase going into this fight. His drops his right hand badly, he pulls his left back too far and keeps his chin up. He doesn't have a jab to set it up, nor does he have a right hook to counter.
This has been my biggest concern from the moment I heard of this fight. Unless they've changed some things, his biggest opening is for the counter left hook, and guess what Donaires best punch is......
It worries me.
This is all I am going to say about this fight until it is over. If the smaller, older, less talented Naravez was able to go 12 rounds with Nonito than there is no way that Rigo won't be able to. This is going to be a good close fight and I for one can't wait.

There's no doubt in my mind Rigo wins this fight.
If he loses (excluding robbery) I will leave the forum on exile until the Matthysse vs Peterson fight.
Rest in peace then, have fun with your vacation

I do think that Donaire has been a little underestimated in these parts over the last week or so. Too much focus on Donaire's flaws and Rigo's strengths in how people are analysing the fight. Donaire's countering ability in particular seems to be seriously underrated, and if Rigo's going to win the fight he's going to have to try and take some risks himself.

Well good luck with that.
I'm going to probably put a hundo on this fight... but Ima get in on some UFC fights beforehand

I agree about a fire fight, and i hope that he was just hyping the fight by saying he wants to be aggressive.
I think in terms of his low right hand, for the most part Rigo only throws when his opponent is not in a position to throw back. This limits opponents opportunities to capitalize. The way he controls distance and his calmness under fire also serve to limit opponents opportunities.
I think Rigo's best chance is to force his tempo on Donaire make it a slow fight by countering with hard shots and almost never leading. Donaire has shown in the past that he is willing to be aggressive in fights where the other guy is defensive, but he is no where near as effective at doing so as when he is the counter puncher. When coming forward Donaire leaves lots of openings and rarely sets up his attack, relying on the fact the other guy is going to be too scared of his power to throw back, Rigo imo is skilled enough to take advantage.
Obviously this tactic leaves the judges with a very difficult fight to score, but he certainly hits hard enough to catch the judges eye.
Its a fascinating fight no doubt, cant wait to see how it pans out. I'm almost glad i dont have money to bet on it so i can just appreciate it for what it is!
