I was reading that post about Mayweather talkin sh-t about Ward and how Broner is more known than Ward even tho he doesn't even have an amateur background.
Now I know I'm gonna sound dumb as hell but so basically what he did was he vigorously trained boxing, learned all he can, and went straight to the professional ranks? Can you even do that? I thought you needed to do some amateur bouts before u went pro.
Hopkins fought smokers in jail and had alot of boxing in the gyms! Its not like he went into pro boxing a green kid!
Over 300 bouts in the J.O. (junior olympics) is an awfull lot of junior bouts!!
My son won states and regionals and nationals during his J.O career and I'd guess he had 55 to 65 bouts. Thats alot of bouts for Adrian considering the lighter weight classes have less kids in them. Hard to believe that he had all the fights before the beginning of his 16th birthday!
Broner had about 300 fights. Experience as an amateur can obviously be a big help but isn't essential. Hopkins is a boxing master and he never had an amateur background. loads of Mexicans that didn't either that's how a lot have loads of fights by an early age they basically learn their trade in the pros
Hopkins never fought amateur? Thats amazing lol
Is Broner really more well known than Ward? There's some talk about him right now but I'm not really sure he is.
Ward's much better known internationally alright, Broner's arguably better known in the US. Ward did 1.3M on HBO for the Dawson fight though so their numbers aren't really that different.

Yeah, he is. Ward is known only to hardcore boxing fans outside of the Bay Area, and he's also a Showtime fighter.
But don't read into that too much, because I think Ward actually likes it that way. He isn't trying to be a celebrity, just a champion. Broner is always trying to come up with stunts to up his popularity and be controversial.
smh, if u understand the amateur system then u should get what he meant. and hes not really far off. broner has a decent amateur background but its not world class by any means. not at all like wards
I don't think Floyd zero amateur background, meant the Olympic pedigree like Ward and himself. Broner had over 300 fights as a junior but never fought in the open division, meaning no fights after 16 years old.
I know that Calzaghe lost just 1 amateur fight, Sugar ray Robinson had an 85-0 record, Laszlo Papp had a 312-6 record. Also several of the Soviet boxers had terrific records in the 300-10 region.
calzaghe was 110-10 as an amateur so he lost more than one fight, still a great record though and he won 3 ABA titles in a row stepping up in weight each time. very little international amateur experience though, i think lost to ronbin reid for an olympic spot.
donald curry (400-4) and mark breland (110-1) had excellent records too, and they boxed at the highest international level. curry missed out on the olympics because of the US boycott.
Oh so basically Floyd was talking out his ass big time. LMAO Mayweather is f-cking hilarious
i think he was referring to the fact that broner didnt compete against the best in the world as an amateur. most of his 300 fights were as a kid or junior, so he wasnt even boxing grown men and very seldom (if ever) internationally.
floyd was talking money. from a money point of view broner doesnt have an amateur background. doesnt matter how many fights you had, if you havent won anything on an international level against grown men it wont get you much of a pro deal.
everything broner got he earned as a pro, as opposed to olympians like mayweather and ward who were highly touted and had promoters fighting over them before they boxed a single round without headgear.
I'm pretty sure he got stopped by Garry Russell Jr in the amatuers hence why he never made the Olympic team.
Yeah Russell stopped him alright I think. It was pretty funny watching that Seckbach video a while ago of Gary and Broner together, when last year Russell was talking about Broner being a one-dimensional and limited fighter :lol1:
Not to try and defend Floyd or anything here, but you all know damn well he didn't mean he had no amateur background at all. He clearly was alluding to the fact that Broner doesn't exactly have the amateur credentials of an Andre Ward type fighter with the Olympic gold, or really any major accolades besides the two that have been stated.
This is what I was thinking also. But Floyd talks so much sh*t you can't blame some for misinterpreting him.
