I was only surprised he didn't win by a bigger margin. BHop's play acting and dirty tricks deserved at least a couple of points deducted. Horrible, ugly fight.
Not controversial at all,the only people that still cry about it are hopkins nuthuggers or the anti-european yanks, either way their fighter got beat by a white boy
lol WTF is a "Hopkins nuthugger? Or an "anti-European Yank?" You should go make a thread about Andre Ward's headbutts or something. :lol1:
It wasn't controversial at all. It was a very close fight no matter which way you look at it. Both guys fought their own fights pretty well, and both are excellent spoilers. Calzaghe simply had the consistency and work rate to take a very close decision. However you look at it, if you had Hopkins winning it was usually by one, maybe two points max.
A lot of people, the majority at the time at least though it certainly doesn't seem that way now, had Calzaghe winning by a clearer margin than that.
It wasn't controversial. Just a close, scrappy win that Calzaghe nicked.
I've only watched the fight once I had Hopkins winning sorry but Calzaghe punches like a girl. Arm punching through 12 rounds is not what I call EFFECTIVE punching nor was it clean. B-Hop landed harder shots and the cleaner ones and came out the fight without a scratch that says something about Calzaghes punching power since he "landed" so many. Say what you want though about B-Hop getting beat by a white boy and put in his place. I didn't appreciate his comments but he won that night. At the end of the day B-Hop is still here making history after this fight while Calzaghe went on to be a coke head so who's really winning?
Exactly his few fans just want to legitimize his shallow career full of fake stoppages off Hopkins who got robbed

Actually the only people who cry about it are the few Calzaghe fans who bring it up every time Hopkins gets a big win so they can try to legitimize him but the verdict comes back the same every time. He's still aN over protected slapper who fought no one his whole career and was already long forgotten the day he retired.
Joe landed the most punches anybody has ever landed on Hopkins, including the first Roy Jones jr fight.
Joe also landed a whopping 115 more punches then Hopkins did, 232 to 127.
Karma is real people. Hopkins disrespected an entire race of people with his racist remarks and as a result he got robbed. Happens to the best of them. I think Hopkins learned from this experiance though, I haven't heard 1 racist remark come out of his mouth since, good for him.
Fixed it for you
Numbers don't lie. Hopkin's measly 127 punches landed was pathetic compared to Calzaghe's 232 punches. You calling Joe a slapper makes Hopkin's look even worse :lol1: he lost to a slapper.
Again you must have a very loose definition of "punches" but hey sissy types need a hero to. I'm not just calling Joe a slapper he is a slapper and everyone knows it. Hopkins got robbed. Find 1 punch Calzaghe landed that would even hurt my grandmother? It doesn't exist.
It wasn't very controversial at all. There was no hue and cry at the time even from those in the press who had Hopkins up a point.
Cool, thanks for weighing in Cliff. How did you score it at the time?
115-115 for Calzaghe?
There was a slip there. It's 115-112 Calzaghe. Still, I had mentioned it was 8 to 4 Calzaghe, minus the knockdown and that clears it up.
It wasn't very controversial at all. There was no hue and cry at the time even from those in the press who had Hopkins up a point. There is a small mass that still brings it up a lot, moreso over time. Most fans, by a fairly large margin, on here and other boards scored for Calzaghe on fight night. The minority who scored for Bernard bring it up so it may give the impression that anyone was actually sweating the decision fight night. Few were.
It isn't controversial even now. This was no Pea-Chavez or Lewis-Holyfield. At best, it's debatable in the purest sense of the word: it fosters debate. Some people get pissed, a lot say it was close either way, and most who scored it for Calzaghe just laugh at how upset Calzaghe's passionate loathers and/or X worshippers get about the verdict.
I'm going to save your post just so I can repost it when this thread comes up next week and the week after......
It doesn't seem like that was as clear a loss for B-Hop as the second Chad Dawson fight, for example.

I think you will find the fight was signed too happen in 2001,but Hopkins pulled out and chose to fight Hakker instead, for half the money me would have got for the Calzaghe fight :lol1:
To me, that sounds like he was awaiting a negotiation for a larger sum of money, and fought hakker to keep busy, and plenty more better besides later. Its Joe who fought a long string of poorly paid contests versus weak fighters after that fight was cancelled instead of chasing better opponents.
I find it hard to believe that a guy like Bernard, a militant non-ducker, ducked a guy who fights journeymen regularly, just so he could wait till he was in his mid-forties to fight him, thereby losing most of his advantages.
Its just way to fishy, considering their comparative resumes, to assume that Bernard ducked Joe.

the only controversy is why it didn't happen 7 years earlier when Bhop was in closer to his physical prime.
