Think about it for a second and how much the boxing landscape has changed over recent years.
With Golden Boy's close relationship with Stephen Espinoza - Vice President and General Manager of Showtime Sports - it has allowed them to broadcast many fights recently after their HBO output deal has since concluded. Such a link has effectively turned Showtime into a unofficial networking partner.
Couple the fact that Showtime has now captured Mayweather from the industry leader HBO and this leaves HBO with a gaping hole in terms of their superstar potential - the KO loss of Pacquiao does not help. This would mean HBO would be keen to throw money towards a young and appealing boxer such as Broner - another GB fighter.
Trying to secure a boxer such as Broner to HBO their would leave GB/Haymon possessing arguably the most important fighters in the sport. Enabling them with a stranglehold of both broadcasting companies.
The growth of GB over the last few years has been interesting to see as has the decline of their greatest rival Top Rank.
In my opinion I can't see Top Rank lasting long in this battle with recent upsets of Pacquaio and a limited roster, it will be hard to see the likes of Donaire and Rios carrying the Top Rank brand.
Throw in the expected retirements in the upcoming years of greats Marquez and Pacquaio and it will be very difficult for Top Rank to compete with Golden Boy.
Please share/add/discuss. I should add this is purely an opinion that I am sharing, I am not for or against either company as both are capable of poor conduct.
I voted that boxing will stay the same because there were not too many options. I think they have lots of control but other promoters are still here and always will be. Mayweather won't be around that much longer and good fighters are still signing with top rank and other promoters. I am not sure one promoter being in controll of boxing is a good thing. I know Hayman has not allowed some good fights to happen because he was in controll of both fighters.
It's pretty funny that people would want GBP to take over Boxing, but then turn around and hate on the UFC for the same reason. They monopolized MMA (to an extent) and if you want to be in a premier fight, you have to go to the UFC. I just don't see that happening anytime soon with Boxing because though people think Floyd going to Showtime is the dagger to HBO, do a little research on HBO's past and when they've lost fighters to Showtime (i.e. Tyson). People also don't realize how influential Top Rank is. It would be different if NO fighters were signing to them anymore, but that's clearly not the case. Their track record proves they make stars. Has GBP actually made a star from the ground up who's an elite superstar right now? It's not a diss to GBP, but let's keep it 100. I think Arum is shady just like all Boxing promoters, but you can't deny what Top Rank did for guys like Oscar, Floyd, Cotto, and a host of others. They've been around for over 40 yrs for a reason.
yall are crazy, arum always has the true diamonds. better eye for talent , better tested prospects, better matchmakers to make champions. gbp making strides but arum has forgotten more than they know
You mean US Boxing?
There are quite powerful promoters outside the US too, you know. Sauerland have a grip on quite a few prominent European fighters, the Klitschkos effectively promote themselves, etc..
I know Golden Boy are trying to tap into the UK market, but Matchroom, Maloney and Warren have a pretty tight grip. Might not work out as planned.
In the US theres Goossen etc who still have decent fighters.
All above are pretty small in comparison to Golden Boy, but together they effectively prevent an all out monopoly. Lesser promoters are better imo, they will allow fights to happen, everything isn't about money. Best example - Matchroom, look what theyve done with Froch. Hearn works with every promoter out there to get the best for his fighters..
Nope.
Top Rank has the huge Chinese Market cornered.
If they can develop the sport there, then they aren't going anywhere for a looooong time.
Who knows what happens when Arum kicks the bucket?
Top Rank without Arum is like Apple without Steve Jobs. Downward trend.
Top Rank makes innovarions that no other promoter has been able to match so far, like cornering the Latino market and now moving into China, which is a huge deal.
I lived for 4 years in Panama and I saw a new Latino Top Rank promotion every week, including a couple of Pacquiao fights.
Yup Golden boy is going to control boxing soon. Top Rank which I hate because of Arum has a limited amount of fighters. Pacman will retire in the next few years Marquez is almost done 1-2 years left. Whos left Donaire? lol beside rigo he needs better competion which most are in GB. TOp rank is a bunch of re-runs because the old guy is out of options lol or soon he will be. I hope Top Rank dies soon :)
The only problem with one promoter having too much power is the potential for more robberies and decisions in favor of the popular fighters/money makers.
But that goes on regardless with all promoters from as large as Top Rank to as small as the Miami company that promoted the Barthelemy fight earlier this year.
Golden Boy and Al Haymon are the future of boxing. They have both Showtime and HBO right where they want them in the palm of their hands. Kinda like the douche bag on my avatar use to a couple of years back. GBP is controlling the sport right now though.
Imagine in one years time what would happen if they GB & Haymon told HBO they were gonna take Broner to Showtime unless they cut Top Rank out.
They would literally just have Pac Donaire and Golovkin who im sure is gonna need GB's fighters.
Bob is in big big trouble.
they have chavez jr who could come back and stlll sell tickets. brandon rios seems to do well in cali (never looked into the numbers he does though). mikey garcia is his newest champ. although tim bradley isn't a ticket seller, he is a top fighter with guys like alexander, brook, malignaggi, and maidana around him in his weight class.
arum also has a good handful of prospects:
jose benavidez
jose felix
felix verdejo
jose ramirez
oscar valdez
jesse magdaleno
all these kids can be molded into future ticket sellers/titleholders.
then he has guys like jesse vargas, glen tapia, vanes martirosyan, matt korobov, and diego magdaleno who all can be in high profile fights soon.
gbp does seem to have the more established names though, i'll agree with that. the future does seem bright for gbp, but top rank isn't anywhere near done. they surely have more names than you stated, as well as guys that can become big names down the line.

My exact point, GB/Haymon are in the drivers seat and are in a possible position where they can dictate to HBO.
HBO need GB/Haymon more than GB/Haymon need Showtime.
