Would have been a good fight in the minds of a lot of people. It's too bad it never happened but if it had happened at it's peak, what do you think the result would have been?
What do you think Williams would have excelled at in this fight?
What do you think Floyd would have excelled at in this fight?
Obviously size and work rate stand out when you think of Williams.
47% for Floyd winning
53% for Paul winning
it's pretty close, the P Will votes are pretty spread, some think he would have won by KO and others UD. The Floyd votes are pretty straight forward, with most being a UD.
Anymore opinions?
He fights guys smaller than him, or exactly his same size. It's easier to use subtle movements, and lay on the ropes to tire out your opponent.
He'd have to constantly be moving in this fight. You really think he's going to stay in the center of the ring, and try and counter punch him all day? That's an easy target for Paul.
Even a guy like Margarito had to move backwards, and move around more than he was accustomed to.
Paul would be able to impose his will much easier than Floyd.
This is WW/JMW we're talking about here. Floyd doesn't have nearly as much movement at those weight classes.
Get the picture of LW Floyd out of your head.
how many fights had floyd had at ww at that time?3? floyd used more than subtle movement against baldomir.so you and all the other floyd haters believe that quinatnna had or has better movement than floyd?beeter footwork than floyd?better stamina than floyd?quintann has horrible stamina and was still able to outbox williams for 12 rounds the same quintanna that couldn't avoid cotto for 12 rounds.williams style would give floyd problems for 4 rounds than after that floyd would just make him look stupid
The type of movement Martinez has is completely different from the type of movement guys like Mayweather give. Mayweather's movements are much more subtle and would be quite effective against guys like Williams. Mayweather is the type of guy who can get under, take a step to the side and make his opponents reset constantly just by taking 1 step whether it be from short range or mid range, where I think a fight with Williams would be fought considering Williams never really liked using his height and reach while fighting from long range.
Martinez on the other hand uses his movement to dart in and out but his type of movement requires much more space for him to operate.
I've always said that Martinez would have trouble with guys who put the pressure on him because of the type of movement he incorporates into his style.
Floyd's movements work better on guys that "think" then "hit". The reason is that by the time they "thought" it thru, Floyd made that subtle moves and feints. Then the fighter would either miss or "rethink" it thru again.
Williams is another animal altogether. With his type of workrate, He just hits you with a bunch of punches and it will be his opponent who would need to adjust from the bombardment. So while Floyd tries to adjust, Williams already threw 2-3 shots his way.
Again, Floyd hoped that his opponent will play his kind of chess match. Williams doesn't play chess!!!
Also, remember that Williams has the size/height advantage and is a southpaw and Floyd would not be able to use his shoulder roll effectively.
Quintana is a mover. Floyd rellies on his shoulder roll defence to avoid most punches. Against paul he would be in hell. Pauls work rate and height would trouble floyd. That is why he never wanted any part of paul and margarito. Both had similiar styles
when floyd fought corrales he relied mostly on his shoulder roll?floyd unlike most fighters can fight many different ways
His offense was his defense. P-Will's offense > Floyd's defense.LMAO. No one looks good against Winky, and he still beat him. Why would you even bring that fight up? As if Floyd fights anything like Winky.
this is funny.floyd has been considered one of the best defensive fighters ever. was williams ever considered the best offensive fighter?
Floyds power is underrated. I don't where this talk of having no pop comes from. That lead right, left hook and uppercut does damage
His power hasn't been an issue any point in his career and Williams would be no different

All true......
williams' volume punching style is all wrong for mayweather. coupled with stamina and a massive reach advantage, mayweather would be lucky to survive a 12 round match
All of you that are picking Paul Williams realize he got UD'd by Carlos Quintana right? Is Quintana a better boxer than Floyd?

Hey guys,
i was wondering if it is difficult to find someone to Spar with for a Martial Artist/Fighter/Boxer? We’re putting together a service that helps fighters connect with people of similar skill level and experience easily and quickly. It would be a huge help to get your honest feedback. If you’re interested, please give us your thoughts w ww.plentyoffighters. com or you can email me at plentyoffighters gmail. com. any advice or knowledge you can give would be very valuable.
Thanks,
ric :)
Williams KOed Quintana and was able to connect in both fights against Martinez but Martinez had the power to KO Williams. Floyd doesn't have the power of Martinez at 160lbs.
With Williams reach he was able to connect on Martinez unlike some of Martinez's other opponents who had a much harder time finding Martinez. So one has to give Williams credit.
I have said in other threads that Williams had defensive flaws but it would take a good puncher to take full advantage of his mistakes. Floyd depends on his defense and that his opponents would quit trying to unsuccessfully penetrate his defense. Williams threw from everywhere at a very high work-rate. Too much for a Floyd at WW and even more so at 154.

and Floyd has never fought like SRL.
Exactly. Hes too concerned with not getting hit to drastically alter his style like that nor does he have the punching power to do it even if he wanted to.
Yes I know winky was past it when he fought williams bus his defense heavily relied on his high guard protecting both his face and the body. Williams could hit him at will because of those lanky arms and the angle they were coming from allowed him get inside where most fighters could not. To beat williams floyd would have to pull what leonard did to hearns and turn from a boxer into a puncher for this fight.
and Floyd has never fought like SRL.
he also got outboxed by quintanna.... any fighter quintanna can outbox... i'll bet the farm floyd can out box em.
The pro Williams clan has been shouting this from the rooftops, but they'll just respond with, "Quintana out boxed P-Will, so Floyd does as well, but 100x more effectively!"
Never ending cycle.
You are right ... here is another guy who just points out the first fight with Quintana without giving Williams credit for adjusting and KOing Quintana in 1 the next fight.
That is like always bringing up the first fight that Lennox Lewis lost to his opponents and never giving him credit for adjusting and beating them in the 2nd fight by KO ..... its actually worse but whatever ..... Floyd is alwasy the winner in fantasy fights but never had the courage to face them in reality!
Go tell guys like Sergio, Winky and Margarito that. Williams gave Martinez a tough time but Martinez had the pop to retaliate. Floyd lacks in that department.
Lara had 2 things going for him. Lefties gave Williams some trouble and Lara fought Williams after that devastating KO. Lara fought more aggressive against Williams who didn't appear to be the same as before the Martinez KO.
Floyd would not be able to shutout Williams who is a lefty with size if he would use his shoulder roll. Meaning he can "see" and "hit" Floyd with both hands. Williams would be able to go from one end of the ring to another in one stride and connect on his opponents.
Williams was not your usual basic arsenal. Someone like him doesn't come everyday. His only downfall was his defense BUT that downfall never slowed him down. So unless you had the power to KO Williams, he would come at you all night long for the full 12 rounds.
Floyd never faced anyone like Williams and never wanted to fight Williams even though Williams called him out plenty of times. Just like Martinez and Manny. So unfortunately, we will never see that fight.Yes I know winky was past it when he fought williams bus his defense heavily relied on his high guard protecting both his face and the body. Work rate don't win fights. Lara has an extremely low workrate and he was ripping Paul with what ever he wanted.
The only argument people are bringing up in favor of P Dub is size, workrate and chin. That's a pretty basic arsenal for a world class professional fighter and is not enough to beat ATG caliber fighters such as Mayweather and Pacquiao.

You are the 2nd person to mention Corrales being weight drained yet this same Corrales fellow fought between 130-132 4 more times after the PBF fight. Something is not adding up!!!
Its a well known fact that Corrales was severely weight drained.
