Next thing, they're going to be accusing ESPN of favoring Tim Tebow.
Yes, HBO does exhibit biases towards certain fighters, just as WWE commentators tend to favor the good guys. It's essentially the same concept - "putting over" guys that they want to turn into ratings draws in the future.
Take for instance when Juan Diaz fought Lakva Sim for his first title on HBO. Sim wasn't very good, but if they said that, it'd make Diaz's inevitable victory look weak. So they pumped Sim up, calling him sound like Genghis Khan, Diaz in turn became a monster.
And when the masses heard the HBO praise heaped upon Diaz, they began to mimic those same sentiments. Voila, a star is born.
I'm in agreement with most here, we all expect bias. What irritates me is how they're able to shape the perception of (most)casual fans, whom believe they are truly getting 'expert' impartial commentating.
Obviously, if the fighter can make HBO money he's the GOAT in their eyes
The whole conte/memo .. Ward/Berto/Marquez hypocrisy displayed their foul bias
Really? Did the heat win the championship last year? Did the world come to an end today? Of course lampley...i mean hbo is biast towards fighters. Mainly pacman and nonito. Hbo love them some pinoys ill tell ya. Lampley and merchant would of lost control if gezta would of koed vasquez.
HBO's team of "analysts" follow the company agenda. They bet on the horses that will bring viewership. Strictly.
They try to play chess games like Bobby Arum.
However those guys are. They are always all on the same team every fight. Hell. Some weird f***cking answers in this thread..
roy jones i cant stand announcing lol, i like him as a fighter but he is a cheerleader for the american fighters just like lampley and ledermanwhen commenting
Good post. I would say, though, that I don't think that constitutes bias; to me, anyway, bias is ignoring things which are happening and sticking to preconceived notions. For an example, that would be Jim Lampley in any Marco Antonio Barrera fight, especially against Marquez.
Beyond that they all have their preferences, but I don't think it's anything sinister or unprofessional.
Once you know what they like its easy to know what to expect and filter out all of their biases.
If Foreman was still announcing, round 12 of Wladimir-Haye would have went something like this:
Larry: "Haye promised us fireworks and his fire dont work"
Foreman: "Wladimir better not get careless because Haye is still dangerous"
Larry: "George, Haye hasn't shown us any indication that he is willing to take the risk to land those big shots"
Foreman: "Oooh I dont know larry, make no mistake, he is waiting for wladimir to take just one break and then he will be very sorry"
Lampley: "Wladimir has landed 33 out of 123 power shots according to compubox compared to 22 out of 144 for David Haye. We have to assume that Wladimir is ahead on the judges blah blah blah blah"
Nice assessment, what are your opinions on Kellerman and Roy?
They tend to like slicker guys although they are quicker to abandon ship than the other guys especially Roy, the rest of them will go down with the ship except Steward.
It is no big deal they are usually pretty consistent with their biases so once you learn their leaning it is easy enough to tune out that noise.
Lederman-likes guys who press the action
Merchant- like guys to go to war
Lampley- likes HBO guys
Foreman- likes punchers
Steward (RIP)- was a front runner

That Devon Alexander vs Andreas Kotelnik was a perfect example of complete bias, but meh it's their money they can cheerlead for any fighter they want.
kellerman can care less he just wants to pretend he a historian of the sport,.
That's true, but I think I like Kellerman the most of the HBO squad. Seems like the least bias of the bunch usually.
nice gif, lol Guerrero smacked Berto around like a biznotch in that final round.

By the 5th round the fight was always going exactly the way steward had predicted no matter what he said earlier in the night.
