sergio martinez has not cracked most people's all-time great middleweight lists but he is without a doubt the best middleweight in the world today and the top guy in the division since the glory days of bernard hopkins.
martinez is a cerebral fighter but against hopkins, he’s playing chess with the ultimate chess master. martinez would try to neutralize the ultimate neutralizer. martinez might have an edge in athleticism and punch ratio but hopkins is no push over. hopkins is rated as one of the best middleweights of all time.
i see hopkins out thinking and out maneuvering martinez for a win in a competitive fight. hopkins wins via UD.
your thoughts?
Let's not forget that Sergio should have been a career junior middleweight. The man started his career at welterweight in his late 20s...he's a small dude. Against any ATG middleweight Sergio would be disadvantaged from the start.
poopkins. he'd probably turn the pressure on at MW. he had a hard punch, great chin, and good speed. he put punches together. he was already a superb boxer by the end of his mw run, as well.
poopkins via late stoppage in one of the more exciting fights of bernard's title reign.
If Sergio can keep his distance and just use his speed to win by judges then him.. But it's impossible to keep B Hop from smothering and just being crafty in general. B hop wins. Most likely. It's such a weird style matchup its hard to tell honestly. Im going with B Hop out of respect. But Martinez is an interesting matchup for someone like B Hop due to Serg's rare athleticism for that class.
When was Hopkins prime anyway? Lol.
B hop got better with age.
I really dislike this notion of fast fighters gave Hopkins problems. Hopkins was 40+ years old against all of those guys besides Roy Jones, and no one was faster than Roy
We're talking a PIME Hopkins.
Shoot, Sergio struggled with guys like Murray and Barker. Just imagine a young Hopkins in there. No match.
Seriously, if it was speed alone that gave Hopkins problem than he would have lost wide to Pascal when he was way past it. Prime Hopkins had no problem timing speed.

Yes we are talking about prime Hopkins but his resume only got better as he went past his prime. He fought guys that he knew he could technically exploit (I'm a huge Hopkins fan though).
People want to talk about all these accomplishments Hopkins made but most were made AFTER his prime. His best prime win is Trinidad and DLH..other than that he didn't fight anyone of Martinez level. I don't even like Martinez. I just know that a natural fast twitchy fighter would give Hopkins problems.
You brought up Murray and Barker..aren't we talking about primes? Clearly Martinez is not at his best anymore.
I'm probably in the minority but I think I would go with Martinez in his prime. Hopkins always seemed to have trouble with guys that just were natural fast athletes. I think Martinez ambush style of jumping in and our would have helped him win vs Hopkins.
Jermain Taylor
Joe Calzaghe
Chad Dawson
Roy Jones
Even if you don't feel like Taylor won those fights he still gave Hopkins problems.
not to mention even Pascal had success

I feel Hopkins would win quite easily and even has chances of KOing Martinez. A young Hopkins was far from being a bore in the ring and had great speed, power and boxing skill.
Far from being a slow fight like now and could see Hopkins going out to finish it quickly!!!
The only thing that favors Sergio is that Hopkins has had problems with speed.
That's it. Hopkins is a great of the division, Sergio is merely a good fighter who is in a dreadful era.
Hopkins UD. Sergio is good, but he's not near being one of the best middleweights. Who's he fought to put himself there? Sergio might be the top dog right now, but that doesn't mean he's one the most elite middleweights. Bernard is too smart and doesn't need to play into the crowd to get out of his element and fight the wrong fight. Long UD for Bernard.
