I'm a fan of Amir Khan but theres some things that still frustrate me about his style...
Dropping his right hand while jabbing/throwing a left hand. Its a constant thing and he will always be caught with counters by better fighters. I dont understand how his trainers havent pulled him up on it yet??
Hes so predictable. I dont think he has ever thrown a feint or faked coming in using his feet. It means a fighter knows every time they see the movement towards them that they going to get a few punches in a combination. Feints would make it so much more difficult to land counters, and would help him land cleaner when he does decide to throw.
Having said that hes only had 8 weeks with Virgil and there have been some definite improvements, he looked a lot more patient, conserved a lot more energy and looked so much more comfortable on the inside.
Ive followed his career from his debut so would love to him do well despite the chin issues.
The major problem with khan is he isn't an intelligent fighter, he doesn't have the ring intelligence that is needed along with his fast hand speed.
You hit the Nail right on the head, IMHO this is what seperates good fighters from great technical fighters.
You can have speed
You can have power
You can have great timing
You can have great chin*
Etc
But regardless of all those attributes if you don't have intelligence, cunning, slickness etc, you will be exposed by a fighter with these attributes best example(mayweather) broner doesn't even come close so don't start.
I think its safe to say Khan will be remembered for bringing entertainment to the ring. Win or lose he's fights are worth the PPV cost. The Maidana,Peterson and garcia fights were great, great fights. He just needs to stop making basic mistakes but if theres one man who can teach him its Virgil. He made Ward what he is now so if Khan could get half of that tutelage then he will go places. It takes time so Khan needs to stay away from punchers for a while and rebuild his career steadily. He is still a very popular fighter in the uk and america, so he can afford to fight a few lesser fighters. Defence isnt natural, it is taught. Its second nature for us to be aggresive and punch but not to defend. Look at Mayweather, he has fight by fight tuned his defence to be more or less inpenetrable.
This is what it is. Amir is a limited talent and will only go so far. Unlike other fighters with limited talent Amir has a hype machine behind him, so he isn't in obscurity. The hype keeps us hoping that he can improve into something great.
In reality only a few fighters go into the HOF and even fewer become ATGs
I agree kind of, but i also feel that some of the mistakes he is making are so basic that they should be fixed. For example keeping your non punching hand glued to your face and your chin tucked down is something you get taught on your first day at the gym. He doesnt and wont ever have elite ring IQ, so its time to drill him with basics, cos with his speed the basics will take him a long way still.
I hear nobody talking negative about Khan's boxing skills. :boxing:. Not everybody has power to KO Khan. Khan will do fine in his career.
where have you been listening??
I actually agree. He still got countered several times coming in, especially with the hook. Against a more powerful, bigger puncher (*coughGarcia*cough*) he might get dropped again. But in all fairness, he's only been with Virgil 8 weeks. Once habits are established in a fighter, they are very difficult to change (if possible at all).
Yeah of course (esp bold). I reckon these are things that can be drilled though. Hes young enough that he has some time, although with the kind of career hes had already i dont predict him fighting till hes 40!
Hunter seems the right man for the job aswell, if he cant get these fundamentals fixed then i just reckon we'll have to accept that he wont go much further in his career than he already is/was at.
