Madison Square Garden, New York - Austin Trout (26-0, 14KOs) picked up a lopsided twelve round unanimous decision over Miguel Cotto (37-4, 30KOs) to retain the WBA "regular" junior middleweight championship. The scores were 117-111, 117-111 and 119-109.

I've got to say that Rick Wright of the Albuquerque Journal did come through with a well-written piece that headlined the Journal's Sports Section this morning (Monday). I was a little over the top in my remarks about him, so for that I apologize. I want to see Austin Trout succeed because he deserve the big pay days. He is a super-skilled world class fighter who needs all the publicity he can get and I hope the New Mexico media will do everything they can for the greatest athlete from this state since Bob Foster.
So? What if Cotto hangs it up, as he probably should? Will Alvarez and Golden Boy find another reason to not put him in the ring with Austin Trout? What more do they want before they will call Austin Trout "marketable"?
Malignaggi Talks A Lot
He had it even! Paulie Malignaggi is dreaming. He accused Carmen Basilio of hitting him in the nuts a few years ago. I know the move that Malignaggi was talking about and he is full of it. Basilio taught it to Gene Fullmer one year at Canastota and Gene used it on me, and I fell for it every time. He feints to your nuts so you drop your hand and then he swipes you across the face. In fact, Gene said to me, after he'd done it to me about a dozen times, "You know what's funny about it? ...I never hit you in the nuts once."
Malignaggi says whatever he wants to say. Don't listen to him. He sure is good looking though. Pretty face.
Gene, Don and Jay. The greatest of the greatest. RIP Don and Mr. Basilio.
Keep talking Malignaggi.
Albuquerque News Media Is A Bunch of Third Rate Hacks
I live in New Mexico (Albuquerque). It is a disgrace that the press here in this illiterate city (TV Media and The Albuquerque Journal, a 3rd rate rag) gave no coverage to Austin's monumental night at the Garden. The sorry excuses for "sports reporters"—including Rick Wright, a hack who is better at covering high school football for the Albuquerque Journal, and who is clueless when it comes to real sports news like Trout-Cotto—gave this big New Mexico Austin Trout story no coverage at all outside of reprinting the Associated Press feed or copying the NY Times story on the fight. Rick Wright, or any of the Journal staff could no more be at the level of a NY Times reporter than they could tell you preceded Putin as the Russian President. Ignorant sorry excuses for members of the news media. The Albuquerque Journal and the rest of the media here owe Austin Trout and his team an apology.
The local CBS newscaster, at 10:29 pm last night (Saturday, well after the fight was over) added a one-sentence comment before they signed off. And he had trouble reading the name, "Miguel Cotto." He actually stammered while trying to say his name.
Whoever said Trout hugged too much needs to watch again. A LOT of clinches were initiated by Cotto. It was smart as he tried to maul Trout up and bring him squat to land the hook.
I had the fight 115-113 for Trout. That was a great performance on his part, I thought it was pretty close up until the late middle rounds when Trout REALLY got in his game and really started to outbox Cotto. That was a great performance on his part. Competitive, close, but decisive. I don't see why people think this was a robbery, Trout clearly won this fight. I don't agree with the 117-111 and 119-109 scores, but this was definitely Trout's night. A fight with Canelo and Trout would be good.
Only a boxing novice and utter retard could think Cotto was robbed lol. That fight in all honesty wasn't even that close. Paulie is a great commentator and has a lot of boxing knowledge but he is HORRIBLE at scoring fights and making predictions. Honestly, he was sucking Cotto's dick too much. I gave Cotto 2 rounds, 3 max and that is being generous. If Trout would have pressed the gas more he would have stopped Cotto 100%. Boxers like Trout and Floyd are just too skilled and talented for Cotto I hate to say, respect to Cotto but its true. If you notice that if you can take Cotto's power, you can wear him down and beat him. You always know when Cotto is in trouble because he starts getting on his bicycle and backing up. When Cotto starts backing up that is the tell tale sign the tide is turning in the fight for the other fighter.

Trout arguably swept the last 6 rounds, and you only gave him 3 rounds in the entire fight?

Paulie is the only one that watched the fight that scored it a draw. What other reason could it be other than an attempt on his part to make the fighter that whooped his a$$ look better? Maybe he thought Cotto would come over to ring side and break his face again. Simply put I don't know how anyone who knows anything about the sport of boxing that could have scored that fight a draw or even close.
That would have been some s**t to see. Cotto comes over to ringside and breaks Malignaggi's face again after being thoroughly outpointed.
Man was I wrong about no doubt Trout. The guy can fight. I had Trout winning this fight 115 to 113. Cotto had an off night he couldn't land his combinations all night he forgot to throw the right hand. Props to Trout for bringing the heat last night and winning this fight on the score cards very hard to do in NYC. It's a tough loss for Cotto he fought well he'll bounce back like he always does. Trout is a tough fighter Cotto has nothing to be ashamed of. I would like to see Canelo fight Trout next. Hey if Cotto had the balls to fight Trout so should Canelo.
Well done to Trout. Outboxed Cotto comprehensively consistently landing. Not only that he was able to beat Cotto up in the clinches and used his size to puch Cotto about.
Cotto either needs to retire or go back to 147.
I had it 113-115 Trout.
Gave Cotto rounds 2-5 and 10. Anyone could argue that Cotto didn't win those early rounds but either way it wasn't a blow out. Either guy could have won but Trout made his mark and did what he had to do. The younger faster taller man won and i give my respect to Trout for stepping into Cotto's house and winning.
IMO Cotto didn't finish strong enough in the last 2 rounds to make an argument that it was a robbery. I think anyone who has it a draw or either man winning by a point or two is fair.
Cotto’s aggression early on had me favoring him while Trout turned it on later in the fight to give him most of those rounds. All and all I thought it was a great fight and wouldn’t mind seeing a rematch. However Trout vs Alvarez would be the fight to see at 154 now!
i just need to take a moment and laugh at all the ppl saying this fight was close, having it a draw, some ppl even had cotto winning???
that was a 117-111 fight for trout, maybe u can argue 116-112 for trout....u gotta watch fights closer....even the rounds that i had cotto winning, he didn't dominate at all, he just made the rounds close, trout dominated at least 4 or 5 rounds, cotto didn't win a round after the 6th from what i saw
I have to agree with this, but I also think the first Marg fight took a hell of a lot off of Cotto. Since then he hasn't been able to go past 8 rounds well, he did against Marg (II) but he was wearing out bad. Against Mayweather he was done after 10 rounds, no more pop and any punch could KO him. He is shop worn as people have been saying but only just now, for the Mayweather fight he was in as top condition as he'll ever be from now on. He can make 147 but you can tell he is being lazy and he doesn't have the hunger anymore contrary to what he has been saying. He is fighting for the money, nothing wrong with that but it will cost him some of his fanbase myself included, especially with him walking out two fights in a row. The Mayweather fight was closer so I can handle him walking out on that with the scoring there is no excuse for last night.
He's never been able to go past 8 rounds well, even Malignaggi tagged him a bit in the latter rounds.
Cotto is a true warrior and I am a ride or die fan of his for life but this fight gave us a great idea of what would've happened to Cotto against Martinez. Martinez would've crushed Cotto probably within 5-7 rounds!!!! Last night's fight was a true jr.middle-wt vs a true welter-wt. Gotta love Cotto but Trout wasn't a good opponent for him especially at this stage of Cotto's career.
Indeed, I don't see Cotto wining Martinez as this guy is like Pacquiao at 160. ...and Cotto wining Canelo? I doubt it.. unless pure boxing & great movements are applied, there must be no KO on Cotto's mind!
I'm glad he wasn't in there with a heavy handed fighter because he is primed to get hurt! He doesn't have good reactions and his motor is NOT running on all cylinders anymore. He's done! He had a few bad outings that took his power away and thats that! I hope he walks away and retires I'd hate to see this young man get KO'd badly! He had a nice run and made some decent money and now its time to stop! Nice fighter, good competitor! Ray.
agreed. remember when Arum was talking about Chavez Jr vs Cotto? Cotto would've been murdered in 5 rounds. People need to realize Cotto is not as serious about his boxing career as guys like Bhop and Mayweather. He blows up/chubs out in between fights and then has to drain back down to fight weight. the only reason he went up to 154 is because it's less of a hassle to get down to 154 than 147. his obvious stamina issues tell me he will never beat a top elite fighter again in his career
I have to agree with this, but I also think the first Marg fight took a hell of a lot off of Cotto. Boy Al Haymon has one hell of a stable. Pretty one-sided fight. Definitely don't want to see Cotto against Canelo now. Lots of smokescreens being thrown around these past few days. Get ready for the real news in the coming weeks.
Trout's size proved to wear Cotto down. Cotto struggled to win but his body was not willling. Looked like he was weakened by Trout's consistent jabs. So no matter how skilled he is or how well he prepared for it, he didn't prove to belong to that division. I wished he was not that gusty and should have fought a lesser opponent while getting used with fighting in that division. Anyway, kudos to Cotto for being so brave and taking on a big, young champion in Trout. At least now he knows that he can't fight Martinez.
