I watched Peterson-Khan yesterday and Maidana-Khan today.
Sorry guys but all the crap on every Khan thread about him having a glass jaw is outright garbage.
Peterson wound up on a lot of those shots. His whole body weight and jumping into them. A glass jaw wouldn't withstand a couple of those let alone all of them.
Maidana literally smashed into Khan's jaw in his best round. Khan wobbled but so would many other guys at 140 and even 147. And he withstood the harder shots Maidana immediately followed up with.
I watched the Garcia-Khan fight just now. Khan had just thrown an uppercut. That's not a good neck position to have to then withstand a perfectly timed and balanced hook which Garcia threw.
It hit Khan in an awkward spot too. It snapped his neck as much as his head and also partially hit the back of his head.
A Maidana or Rios chin would have still been standing but they're iron jawed. That doesn't mean Khan is glass jawed. It was Khan's position, the surprise, the area of impact and perfect timing by Garcia.
Take one of those elements out and Khan might be stunned, but he isn't crawling around and doing a Bambi dance.
The mental damage that KO did will take time to repair. He needs to get confidence in his chin back before getting in the ring with a puncher. But he can get in the ring with a puncher again and win. Because he's not glass jawed.
Alright I admit I was wrong and I take this thread back- Khan's chin is extremely worrying.
Khan did withstand bombs when hurt against Garcia. But I massively underestimated how much Garcia, with the cumulative damage of Peterson and Maidana, cracked Khan's chin.
How many punches did Garcia need to change the fight?
One.
I thought that was why we love boxing? One punch can change it all, no matter who you are or who you're fighting. (almost)
It's bad but his poor defense makes things worse.
this. khan's chin is certainly not good, especially for a top boxer.
he doesnt' really defend. he relies on hand and footspeed and his reach to keep him out of trouble. when he's on the way in he's throwing and open, and then he books it out of there.
8 knock downs in 29 fights. That's just too much.
If we were talking about some Gamboa style knock downs he suffered, in which Gamboa was never hurt, just off balance; Then we could say "Well his chin is not as bad as people say". But that is not the case, Amir Khan goes down and he goes down hard and gets hurt badly. His punch resistance isn't as bad as people think it is, it's even worst than people think it is. Garcia, Drizlane, and Limmond.
And Prescott as big a puncher as he is has only scored 2 more stoppages in 10 fights after Khan, with both stoppages coming against journeymen.
Tell that to Willie Limmond, Rachid Drizlane, Michael Gomez, Breidis Prescott and Danny Garcia, who combined knocked him down a total of 8 times.
yup, khan's chin is glass. it would seem it has gotten better but not really, khan just learned to avoid risks. It seems when ever khan takes risks he gets rocked badly.
Its not so much Khans chin, it his over all defense. The shots from Prescott and Garcia probably would have knocked down any world class fighter, but his defense after he throws his shots is what puts him in those types of situation. Khan doesnt have the greatest chin, but the shots he take are huge and he shouldnt be taking shots like that given his amateur background. Ive never liked Khan much, but most of his fights are pretty exciting.
There's no doubt his chin has improved at 140.
I mean, you don't go from being knocked down by Limond to surviving a 10th mauling from a guy like Maidana, even if his power is maybe slightly overated

Madaina has never been a huge punncher. He was a bum who never trains. He only wrecked Ortiz, because Ortiz walks around at 170, and was fighting at 140. He came in at 64' against Floyd. Peterson has no power, and Danny does.
First time I've seen that 4th round against Garcia in ages and I have to say, Khan fought like an idiot. If he jabbed and moved instead of trying to trade punches while he was still on wobbly legs he could have recovered by the 5th and maybe made a fight out of it.
Hopefully Hunter can drill a defensive mindset into Khan because he could make these fights much easier on himself. I think he may be too much of a warrior though to make the changes he needs. I hope I'm wrong.
It's like, he took all those bombs in the 4th, GOD I lost count. More than 15 overhand rights, I don't care what type of chin you have, very few world class fighters can withstand that kind of punishment, very few. Somehow that's suppose to be a testament to how frail his chin is? No.
Its not as bad as its made out at times, we've seen him take some good shots well. Its not too good though, hopefully Hunter helps him defense wise and he wont have to take as many big shots.
When you're hurt, you know if you are throwing a punch or not. The only thing Khan should have threw during that 4th round was the jab. Standing on the inside and trading was not a good idea.
I can't hold it against him. Most fighters as hurt as Khan was against Maidana and Garcia don't fight smart because they simply can't. It's not possible because they are barely conscious of what they are doing.
The problem is not that Khan doesn't get up or take shots AFTER he's been hit hard. The problem is that he gets buzzed so much from the first shot that he can't recover and it costs him the fight.
Since when is khan NOT doing the chicken dance lol.
He did it against Prescott, Maidana, Peterson, and Garcia. I think its fair to say your chin isnt very good when you get seriously hurt or KOd everytime you face a puncher.
He also got dropped by these dudes :
His chin is bad.
He didn't fight like an idiot. His brain was still scrambled and he wasn't capable of fighting smart because he couldn't think.
Khan does seem to take beatings better when he's already hurt. He did against Maidana too, he was stumbling around the ring on skates and taking huge punches. I don't know if that applies to all fighters, but Khan can take a beating when he's already hurt.
