Early in Carls career before he fought Pascal, entered the super 6 etc his hands were slightly lower and he used to draw opponents onto this spectacular uppercut, I think he knocked out Magee with this, it was the punch he fcuked Dodsons world up with and well, he used this to GREAT effect! The timing was superb!
I've noticed in the last few years, hes tightened up a bit and doesn't seem to use this anymore. Why do you think this is?
Was it a bad flaw with his hands so low? Dropped it because you can't really get away with it at top level?
Thoughts...
It's because when he threw it against the first really world class champion he'd faced, he got knocked down and quite badly hurt with it. It's too easy to counter from where Froch throws it and because of the way you throw an uppercut, not only are you completely open, but you also can't see the counter shot and you turn yourself right into it.
He could get away with throwing that sort of shot at domestic level. You can clearly see how much open he was at that level, barely having any defense at all leading to the super-six.
I'm sure he still has urges to throw that shot now and again, as we saw against Bute, but i think even Carl knows at the elite level he has been accustomed to over the past few years, you just cannot get away with throwing shots like that.
He's much better at just breaking the opponent down through accumalation of punches.
Yeah he does telegraph it - in fact it was his undoing in that 4th round vs Taylor - he tried to throw it and before it could land, Taylor threw that right hook bang on the chin that sent Froch crashing against the ropes and the next punch knocked him down.
wow what a punch! Would like to see that more often but at the moment he throws it hes completly wide open. Maybe he realized that he left himself open and decided against it when facing competition like the super six. Ima watch the Bute fight to see if i can spot it like the other poster suggested

i know the shot you're talking about
he would get clobbered throwing that against a world class operator. it's a hugely telegraphed punch. looks like a cartoon, lol.
froch doesnt take risks (or punches,) like he used to. if you want to have a long career that's the way it's got to be.
I was JUST thinking about this! He actually brought it back against Bute with devastating effect. It's just a shot that you have to feel out. It leaves him way too open to ever be using it regularly instead of in a "bag of tricks" manner.
