When Pac and Mayweater where the best of the best and the where towring over everyone else, the whole world was buzzing for a fight between the two.
It was like ALi vs frazier 1 where the whole world wanted to see the fight.
But rather then letting all the anticipation and excitement climax when the two would finally face each other inside the ring, the fight just faded away excuse by excuse.
When it finally became aparent that the ego`s,money, and corporate thinking was more important then giving the fans what the wanted boxing as a whole started to loose some of its spark.
Where would boxing had been if Ali didn't fight Frazier and big george ?
The change came with the supersix, it re-sparked the whole thing, and it was then the major promotors started to take notice.
We now have Ward fighting Dawson,Froch fighting Bute, and Martinez fighting Charvez jr and the the big wheels are turning again.
This is what we need if we want boxing to become a major sport again, casual fans and new potential hardcore fans simply get bored and shy away on to other things when the fights that would determine who is the best in the weight class don't get made.
Great warriors and legends are forged in fierce battle and by the eyes and minds of those that witness it.
Boxing lost its spark long before Pacquiao and Mayweather even turned pro. The super 6 didn't re-spark nothing, it brought some fighters into the spotlight but as a tournament it wasn't 100% legit since half the fighters dropped out. Nothing is going to save or kill boxing, it will remain a fringe sport in the US and a major sport in a few countries. Boxing is not a legit sport anymore, it's run like a circus (literally) so just sit back and enjoy the show.
pacquiao and mayweather didn't fight when they were the two best boxers on the planet, and boxing survived.
in fact, that they didn't fight was better for both of their earnings
I didn't say the killed boxing, I am saying that when the best dont fight the best
boxing slips out of casual peoples minds, and by that choking growth of boxing.
If the would have faught 2 years ago, boxing would have had more fans today

Boxing's dead regardless, unless you can somehow tap into 18-30 market again. Think about how many people you meet in your lives, and how many of this people that know anything about boxing, besides mayweather/pac/Tyson/Ali/ maybe ray Leonard. Then think about all those "tap out" kids out there, that have some semblance of Ufc, because it has way more exposure than boxing does.
Ex. You gonna watch ufc this weekend?
Isn't that crazy Brazilian guy fighting, think my buddies ordering it on ppv.
Ex. You gonna watch canelo Alvarez vs josesito Lopez?
Who and what!?
Boxing isn't dead, I think people need to realise that the world is bigger than America. Also I think people exaggerate the popularity of UFC or hold boxing to an incredibly high standard. You talk about boxers being unknown? How many UFC fighters are well known to the masses?
