still don't get it. nobody was robbed. athletes spend money on cases of champange at partys, buy a MANSION, take care of family they never knew etc.(stupid analagy). mom/dad sends you to the store for some sugar or whatever. if they don't count the change we sqeezed a piece of candy, soda and chips out of it tons of times. same with anything concerning moneys. nobody stole. there for the taking. again i challenge anyone in the game to tell the truth. if we are honest we'd like to have the funds we spent on a girl, alcahol, weed, coke, roids, clothes, cars etc and we would live in comfort. instead we blame someone else. i think in basketball penny hardaways advisor said if any athlete told his accountant to bring him all his money to him in 48 hrs they couldn't do it. it aint there. it's tied up in securities etc. charles barkley lost millions early in his career spent on the most populous bird. chickens. do you ever hear him mentionioning it. no he knows he got. hoodwinked, had. many champions would have never got a shot if not for king. i am no king fan but before u all talk the talk make sure you talk to someone who has been there. former fighters speak now or forever hold your peace. doubt they will.
a promoter is not in the game to make money for the fighters he is in the game to make money for himself. being called a crook = promoter, politician etc. the fighters, moaley, hopkins, de lahoya, mayweather etc know they don't need king anymore and arum will be fazed out in 2 yrs i bet. the paypouts are peanuts compared to what don made. think for a minute. if a fighter decides to ask how much money he has and there is none then don was to blame. so where does the ACCOUNTANT, FIFNACIAL ADVISOR, be held responsible? i know for a face these fighteres ask for upfront money for cars, houses DEBT! etc. tim witherspoon told me they said sign this tim. sign that tim and he did over and over again. yeah he got 1 million and bought a house and didn't have enough money left over to furnish it. so did don take hearns money or holyfields money? i think not. don didn't invent the wheel. if there are former figters on this board they will ALL TELL YOU being short changed is
Wow, that's deep!!!

" i can count my own money " all the experts on losing money, losing in the ring, how to throw a left hook etc never been in the game. just talk to any fighter if you know one and if he is honest you will be shocked. hopkins tried to basically hold seminars to let fighters know what goes on and was shot down as a liar and a crook. he could write a bestseller telling what goes on in the game. being a partner in promotions i doubt thet book will come out anytime soon. not trying to be a know it all. just my opinion
king is a crook. he is a good promoter if he wants to be, if he belives you can make him lots of money for a long period of time. if he doesnt he will just use you. only promoter whos worse than king is arum, hes no crook hes a villain.
Don King was and is a true scumbag. He screwed a ton of fighters many different ways. Tim Witherspoon especially. Witherspoon went to England as the WBA champion to defend vs Frank Bruno. Bruno took home close to 3 million as the challenger and after King and his minions took out their cut, Spoon took home 90k!
With all that said, I sure do miss the King PPVs that routinely had 4-7 good title fights on them!
don king made a ton of different fighters a ton of money.
along the way he established a reputation for manipulating purses and careers in a manner that was detrimental to some of his fighters
as evidenced previously in the thread, king has killed at least two men. one owed him money and he was stomped to death. the other was shot in the back while fleeing from a robbery of king's gambling operation.
he served four years for the stomping death. the man he killed was an employee and he owed king a few hundred dollars. he was later pardoned by a state official.
the shooting death was ruled justifiable, and i dont think king served a day in jail for it.
i've met don king and i've spent some time around him. i did not talk to him, but he talked at me. to say that he's a remarkable human being is a gross understatement.
i've only been around a few people like that in my life.
Its not a smart move to sign with King because he is basically blackballed from boxing by promoters and networks.
But in his heyday nobody could promote better than King!!
Don King has screwed over a lot of fighters in his time, he used to make fighters hire his son as their managers so that he could get a bigger cut of the purse. Plus he used to only pay fighters a fraction of what they were worth or what he promised them they would be paid. Anyways, he doesn't have the power he used to have so I don't think he can do much for young prospects. Most of his fighters fight once a year on small club shows nowadays.
Don King stole almost as much money from his fighters as Bob Arum did! Promoters are theives with a suit and a smile.
Don went to prison for manslaughter after he stomped someone to death, but he should get thrown back inside for grand theft boxeo.
Over a $600. debt.
King doesn't have the pull in the industry anymore. HBO and Showtime have done their best to muscle angle him out of the game since the mid-90s to varying success.
Fighters that sign with DK Promotions are plagued with inactivity. They fight once a year (if that) and almost always try to get out of their contract early.
Fighters these days would be smart to only work with Don as a last resort.
Tyson sued and King settled out of court for $14 million.
Ali sued King and was awarded $50,000.
Witherspoon won $1 million.
Terry Norris sued him and King settled out of court for $7 million.
Byrd sued but settled for being released from his contract.
