Ok...I'll quit bein' lazy...hang on...
Ok, according to boxrec Rigo was 20 when he won the WBA interim bantamweight title and it was his 7th fight.
Sugar Ray won the WBC strap at WW in his 26th fight. He was 24.
I just glanced at their records when I did the first post. Lol didn't think anybody would raise the bar on me ;)
Actually, he was about 28 or 29 or something. He is about 30/31 years old right now.
Edit: dont worry, missed the other replies.
We are not talking about the same thing yordani despaigne was32 when he lost his first pro fight( notice it was against ismaill sillack very good fighter in a hard fought fight)far from his prime and he doesn't have the rigo's amateur legacy..yan Barthelemy is like 40 by now also far from his prime..Luis Franco still undefeated..
Despaigne was 31 when he lost to Syllakh. Yan Barthelemy is now 32. But, while both these fighters had good amateur careers, their success was nowhere on the level of Rigondeaux. All these guys obviously started their pro careers late. In the case of Yordanis and Yan, apparently too late. It's even possible that all these men are already past their primes. Crazy to consider when thinking of Rigo.
The best thing RIGO should do is to make more noise and make himself more marketable. yes he's looking for big fights against the top guys, but the guys in the boxing business just says something like "Yeah, you're good and dangerous BUT who are you by the way?"
thats how i see it. Rigo should fight more often, improve his record.. Knock all those in his way and definitely he'll get the big fights soon when can draw people already. No good businessman would put their star fighter against a dangerous unknown.. Skill is one thing, business and being popular are another. Rigo should earn it.. Not just the first one.. Yes he kicks ass but No, he doesnt deserve the big fights yet.
This is my take on this.
How does a world champion ranked in the top 5 with wins over respectable guys such as Corboda, Casey & Ramos need to earn bigger fights?
We all know what he is capable of.
How can he exactly earn them when you'll only dismiss the opposition as bums?
Frankly as a Donaire fan I think you'll say anything because Rigondeaux is a huge threat.
This whole he needs to prove himself thing is rubbish especially when you take into consideration Donaire isn't exactly fighting killers himself.
Teeny-tiny Narvarez, Vazquez Jr coming off a spanking from Arce & Matthebula...Those guys are in noway, shape or form better than Ramos, Casey & Corboda, guys Rigondeaux is smashing in just a handful of pro fights.
Rigo was 30 when he won the interim strap from Cordoba... He didn't turn pro until he was 28.
He was actually 30 not 20 (he is 31 now n that would imply he has only had 3 fights in the last 11 years)
Oops yup u guys are right. That was some poor arithmetic on my part.

Look..this guy is 2 times olympic champion.2 times world champion..6 times panamerican champion..6 times Cuban national champion..this guy is boxing everydau from his 6 years old..everybody take math and history at school in Cuba they go to IDE them ESPA ..just learning boxing..belive me be 6 times Cuban champion is hard ..the worst in there is 2000 times better than mathebula..he beat two time yuriorkis gamboa..if u ask him how much is 2 + 2 maybe he dont know but in boxing he is a master..he is not loosing anytime soon..and donaire, nishioka and mares know..he havent fought nobody at pro cuz they wont fight him..thats my opinion is not the absolute true..i hope better fights to come and no more picking old fighters..rigo should fight mares whom he alredy beat in the amateurs or donaire who is for sure a very talented fighter who dont trust in himself..if they lose they lose against the best..that is allways a win in tha fans heart.
Yeah you're way off. If all these guys are so much better than Mathebula, how come so many are sputtering before the world title level? You got great amateurs Despaigne, Barthelemy (gold medalist, beat Gamboa several times) who are total pro washouts. You got amateur stars like Franco (beat Gamboa 2x?), Jhonson, who'll be lucky to achieve what Math has. Remember that Caballero was Ring mag's top 10 p4p, and unified beltholder when Mathebula pretty much beat him in his hometown.
Anyway, Rigo does have something to prove yet: that he can handle himself when the going gets tough. Unless you think he can just walk through the division without being hit. Notice that a lot of the guys above look much better in the early rounds.
Just never seen a dude with 10-0 record get so much recognition.
Maybe the greatest amateur boxer of all time the man oozes class and is clearly being avoided also winning a world title in his 7th pro fight is the reason why he's so respected

That's a good thing isnt it?
he hasn't fought anyone of substance and he struggled vs cordaba
I didn't know struggling vs someone made a fighter not a good one. Refer to the quote below...
Pacquiao was knocked the f*ck out by 2 jungle bums, look how successful he is...

What's the deal with this guy?? he is only 10-0 why is he ranked so highly and already a champion??Becuz he'd whoop all the guys in his div if he could get um in the ring, it aint hard to see that.
his talent exceeds his resume basicaly, and didn't they put Spinks in with Ali after only 7 pro fights...

Because that's how it works. Fighter A wont fight fighter B.
By NSB logic fighter B is automatically better and fighter A is ducking.
Martinez Pirog
Ward Bute
Donaire Rigondeaux
Bradley Khan
Gamboa Rios
Canelo everyone
Dirrell everyone (it does seem like he's ducking his job in general, though)
So if you ever want to know who is the best p4p just come up with a fantasy matchup for a p4p fighter, if it doesn't happen, you know your answer.
his resume is highly overrated
but the guy is damn good. damn good.
great defense. great counterpuncher. great power. very rare combination of skills.
How can his resume be overrated when thats his point of criticism. <_<
Anyway, Rigo gets hype because even though he has 10 pro fights, its not like he's very inexperienced. He'a not pro at his age by choice and he'd have had huge expectations no matter when he went pro due to his amateur brilliance. That and if you see his fights he just has it. It also helps he is being openly avoided by a top "p4p" fighter and is actively seeking the best in the division but cannot find them.
a great amateur record does not a great pro fighter make.
i think a lot of the hype for rigo is a backlash against cash cows in general.
convoluted bscene logic.
I agree completely, but I believe that is why a pro fighter would get so much hype outside of the casual boxing fan!
2 time Olympic Gold Medalist, 2 time World Cup Gold Medalist, 2 time World Amateur Championship Gold Medalist, with almost 400 amateur wins, and winning a title in only his 7th fight. Nothing more to say!

Rigo is a world away from p4p. He hasn't beaten anybody of note, and even if he does beat Nonito, I still wouldn't rank him p4p.
The general consensus on Rigo is of no relevance to me, fam. P4p Rankings don't mean s**t to me unless it's a cross-divisional Mega fight, which are few and far between.
I observe fighters and judge them on pedigree, level of competition, and skill. As far as match-ups are concerned, divisional rankings are there for a reason. I look at those, and speak on match-ups I think should happen based on the aforementioned indicators. Simple.
I'm no delusional fan boy or agenda-pushing troll. With that said, I'm also not a promoter, matchmaker or manager. So as a boxing fan, I want to see the best BOXERS go at it.
Respect..... I have a post that says something very similar in so many words..... Just was wondering pimp.... Catch you on the next debate :boxing:
