Roy Jones, truly the only person who knows what the hell they talking about as if far has hbo commentating is concerned. Jim Lampley, for his color commentary, however his bias for concern fighters is starting to wear thin on me.
George Foreman was a bit more objective than the rest. HBO commentators don't narrate fights. They are talking about other things until something happends, then Lampley interrupts to comment on a knock down or something, and even then, he is comparing the moment to another fight. (The ko of Rahman vs Lewis 1st fight - as Lewis is being counted out, he is talking about when Oliver McCall koed Lewis instead of narrating the present action).
If you watch fights from other countries and even in different languages, you hear the fight being narrated as it is happening with the right blows being described. Another thing, HBO is bias and their comments are in favor of who they want to win, exagerating their favorite's actions and many times keeping quiet when "their" opponent is doing something good.
As much hate Lampley and Merchant get on here, they always have the most memorable lines.
Without Lampley we would have any "BANG! BANG! BANG!" or this classic:
Roy because he doesn't sound boring and he talks about the fighters' perspective. I know I'm going to be in the minority here but I like Kellerman. I don't agree with Kellerman all the time but he sounds the least biased out of the main three.
Big George Foreman, because he tried to call it like he seen it and tried not to be as BIAS as Lampley and Merchant (other then the Trinidad vs B-Hop in which he was clearly going for Trinidad lol)
Lennox Lewis was also pretty good
Andre Ward is not only P4P one of the best fighters today, but he is already one of the best Boxing Analyst, he knows his stuff! I don't know if a fighter can do both while he is in the PRIME of his career but one of these Networks need to hire him when he is not fighting to come and call fights
I like BJ Flores as well, I think he does a great job!
But HBO need to bring back Big George or Lennox Lewis to come in a try to even things out in the BOOTH, HBO is just too bias now that it is becoming hard to watch. Lampley and Merchant might be a little intimidate by having a Boxer in the Booth that knows WTF he is talking about because those two want to rant and make fans believe what they want them to believe without someone cutting in and correcting them when they are WRONG (which is OFTEN!)
What in the name of this earth....
You mean more handsome as in more good looking or more handsome as in his style of fighting?
you know exactly which one i mean,
the good looking man; lampley favors him.
George Foreman and Roy Jones, Jr.
My favorite was George Foreman because he was the more independent thinking of all the boxing expert commentators, who didn't seem to mind at all in not always toeing the HBO company line. At times Lampley and Merchant would try to gang up and bully him and he would always manage to push back no matter how unpopular his opinions were; Unlike his laid back successor Manny Steward. The second would be Roy Jones, Jr. He is almost clairvoyant with his expert commentary. Once he predicts something would happen in a fight it usually does occur.
jones and lampley
jones is terrific
and say what you want about bang bang lampley, but they guy has been ringside at most of the world's biggest fights for longer than many of you have been alive. i was a toddler when lampley first signed on with HBO, and i am a grown man now.
he knows boxing. he's got his biases and weak areas, and he works for HBO in every sense of the word, but he knows boxing.
he often favors the more handsome fighter. it's unreal. but they guy does know boxing. they all do. even a guy like lampley, who got the job because of his voice, looks, and merits as a journalist, and not his boxing acumen, knows a hell of a lot about boxing.
they all know their ****.
i hear guys talking like they could do a better job. you can't. and you shouldn't.
