Im curious on people's backgrounds here. I boxed off and on for about 15 years and had a handful of amateur fights....and did Terrible. Lol. I was always one of the better natural athletes in the gym with great power and speed at the time, but had zero stamina. Looking back now my training was always arobic instead of anaerobic and I would have little left after a round and a half.
What is your current or present boxing background (be honest). Also what style of boxer are you?
I dont box but i've kickboxed and done some mma sparring , i mostly just train and compete in bjj now ..Anyway , i sparred a few times it's really fun. I had a good jab and head movement. One thing for sure , body shots are no fun lol. Any man that steps in the ring ( or the cage ) deserves all the respect in the world.
That's a damn good record. Really sucks you got injured. Was your goal to turn pro at the time?
Yes that was my plan but when have a TBI which I'm medicaly retired by the Military it's impossibile to fight again
Well, as an amateur fighter, I had nothing great, nothing special but I was complete, decent speed, decent power (not a ko puncher, but I could hurt cats even in sparring sessions ), good skills, durable.
I think I had the tools to be a pro or a very good AM, but I didn't have the right behaviour mentally, before the fights I was thinking too much about everything (who is watching the fight, who is my opponent, can he punch?) EXCEPT focusing on my fight.
My trainer always said, you have to focus on your fight, your performance, your game, not the guy you are fighting or the tards and *****es around the ring, he was right, but it's not easy.
So I often underperformed and lost when I shouldn't have, the funny thing is I did better in the hardest fights, and beat some good fighters.
It's funny that you say that. Lol. I was the same way. I use to stress for like a week before a fight. Couldn't think about anything but the crowd, losing, how I would look in the ring, all sorts of dumbs@*!# by the time the fight rolled around and I was getting in the ring, I think I had already worn myself out. Lol
I boxed for 2 years before my accident and son was born I had good speed I had some pop enough to keep a guy honest but by no means a big puncher I was so athletic tho I just did a lot of thing wrong and made up for em with speed trying to be Roy jones lol it was my childhood fantasy lol but I had pretty go technique to just wish I would have stuck with it better and stayed training hard but I somewhat lost my devotion and winded up not caring but I still watch every fight I can and try to learn as much history as possible lol
after i graduated college i boxed for 6 months and had 1 exhibition match in front of a crowd. i naturally fought like mike tyson with the peekaboo guard but minus the speed and power. i wish i could have done it longer to try out a different style but i found a job don't have time for it anymore. i would love to go back to it though. i miss punching the bags.

I did well 83 wins 7 losses I won 50 straight amatuer bouts than got bored and quit Robert Coons was my coach and my next step was to fight inter National I was suppose report to Colorodo Springs January 1982 2 year before the olympics and for some reason to this date i don't know why I told Mr Coons I'm not going I quit. I had very fast hands feet and could bang I was taught by a Mexican first that's why I could bang than a black dude so I was taught in and out style similar to a Russian. I went in the Army in 1985 got injured so I was never able to box again so I regret it.

AB4Life - any regrets about not going pro.....not any regrets in the sense that "oh i would of been a world champion had I gone pro" or anything like that..... being realistic maybe 1-5% of pro's, if that, make a decent living (compared to the risks and damage they take)..... but i do always think about what it would of been like to have had at least one pro fight, just for that "bucket list" experience.
That makes sense. I didn't have near your success/ experience in boxing but always find myself thinking back about it. Lol. It's addictive in that sense but also scary when you figure that no matter how much success you have in the ring you may end up damaged later

I boxed from 18- 21, used to fight alot when i was younger so i was used to throwing my hands when i first stepped in a gym. People thought i was just flexing about not really being able to "box" and that i was a real bad ass in hiding, but then i stepped in the ring the first time and showed them i was telling truth by gettin my ass kicced lol. But i got used to it pretty quickly after that. Never took it as serious as i should have though. But it did wonders for my stamina and physical fitness. I like to think that i could move well and i kno i was a pretty strong puncher. I injured my leg in sparring one day and as they say gentleman that was that........
Trained and fought amatuer for about 12 years, won every major tourny in my province including golden gloves, was a member of the provincial team and fought at the national level and olympic qualifier level. Along the way was offered a pro contract but didnt take it, was a little young at the time. Gave up boxing to go to university.
I gotta say looking back now 13 or so years later, best thing I ever could of done was box, gave me confidence in all other areas of my life. Discipline, fitness, public speaking, setting and achieving goals etc. Also made me prove myself on the street and at the bar every weekend (I come from a small town that has "some" racist undertones :boxing:)
As for my style, i was a counter puncher/boxer, worked behind a long jab, started at 140lbs last fight was at 170lbs and im 6'3. I had really good footwork and could punch off the back foot well, which would get me out of trouble.
I've done my best to keep boxing alive in my circle of friends, I always host the fight nights and keep everyone up to date on the latest boxing news. But I do feel embarassed and have a hard time defending the sport when decisions like the one we witnessed this past weekend happen. I agree it takes major balls for anyone to get in the ring and get punched in the face for the whole world to see, I have nothing but resect for all fighters.
Any regrets looking back about not going pro?
I boxed for around 10 years in front of my bathroom mirror. The best boxers would appear in it and I would KO them all with my unorthodox style. Tru story.

Rockin' (aka PessimisticPug aka Pitbullpower) was a boxer. He finished with a 4-3 record.
I can't knock him. He had a go at least. However, he's fodder for others on this site.
He shouldn't be, it takes balls for anyone to get in the ring. He's also sparred with top notch pros.
I fought on and off for about 8 years and stayed in the gym for years after the fact. My style was descibed in one newspaper as resembling Marciano. In other words I was short for my weight class and didn't my taking punches to land my own bombs. I still spar occasionally, but nowadays its must Thai as there are no boxing gyms in my general area.
Did the NY Golden Gloves a coulple a times in the early 90's, never won the whole thing. Also they had the Empire State games and other boxing events.
Like any other AM I threw a whole bunch of punches per round. It started getting really fun when you can hit and not get hit cause you see more in the ring.
Blew my knee playing basketball and any plans were over.
I've trained & sparred. Never actually licensed for the ams. Tall & skinny a decade ago. 5-10 134, natural counter puncher, decent speed fought tall with a good jab. Did well against my amateur buddies far too undisciplined to actually make something of myself. A shame too, they tried to push me, I was a dumb dumb.
I boxed when i was younger broke my hands twice and gave it up
did ok won some loss some my style not sure i tried to fight like tommy hearns but i had no power
boxed for years not allowed to go am cuz i had a titanium rod implant in my chest wouldnt pass physica;
i was 6ft2 140 lbs so i did well ..terrible stamina and not a great chin
great right
Damn! 6'2 at 140? With a good jab that would be a nightmare for that weight
i train and sparr against people who are trying to make it pro, i just sit behind my right jab and mix it up to the body and a few combinations, i fight more comfortable at southpaw, and make my opponent miss wit the philly shell (only works against people who cant really fight, when i sparr someone good it doesnt work) and then get tired in the third round and act like my asthma is bothering me then i go home and tell my son how i destroyed the whole gym!
when fighting traditional i keer a high guard and look to counter
my head AND FOOT movement sucks but im workin at it! also getting hit is not my thing so ill never make it boxing, music is my thing!
I'm glad I'm not the only one with stamina problems. Lol. I remember I had my third am fight scheduled and knew I wasn't ready. I had been back to the gym for 2 weeks after a layoff of a month...my dumb@$$ trainer also happened to be the promoter of the card and talked me into fighting. I remember doing mitts for warm up before the fight and getting tired. Lol. So the fight begins and I'm fighting against an out of shape looking Spanish kid and thrashing him...at one point I hit him so hard with a straight right that he just moans...I hit him again and the crowd moans in unison. First round ends and I
Dying trying to catch my breath. Lol. My cornor is trying to convince me I'm not tired and the bell sounds for round 2....I look across to the blue corner and this @#*! Is just bouncing like he's getting ready for a lite jog...needless to say he beat my @$$. Lol
