ATLANTA -- In a decorated career in the boxing ring, Paul Williams picked up three belts and the nickname, "The Punisher." Now, Williams has a bigger fight ahead.
After a Sunday morning motorcycle crash near Atlanta, Williams is likely paralyzed from the waist down.
Manager George Peterson told News 12 that he's in the hospital with a surgery scheduled for Wednesday. That surgery will be to stabilize the healthy upper half of his spine by putting a protective wall around it.
Williams was schedule to fight Saul Alvarez for the WBC Light Middleweight title Sept. 15 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
The product of the Aiken Boxing Club has a career record of 41-2-0, with 27 knockouts. He's the two-time holder of the WBO Welterweight championship and has held the WBO Light Middleweight belt once.
News 12 will keep you updated on any developments in this story.
Holy ****...
I drew some serious.heat. look, I respect paul and if the joke offended you then whatever. it wasn't serious. I hope surgery goes well, bu what else do you want me to say? I'm happy he is alive. I don't care about him boxong. there is more to life and I hope.he enjoys the rest of.his time on this eartj
Motorbikes are in general great fun to ride but they are just too damn dangerous.
This is really sad news, I hope he makes as much of a recovery as possible but the news sounds bad. :(
Any confirmation from a different source other than that little blog everyone is just gullibly swallowing?
all the sports media should be over this by now and that doesn't seem to be the case
I was reading it from the Augusta NBC news affiliate. It seems that the local news in Augusta has reported on this. Not much in the way of details other than Paul Williams the boxer was in a motorcycle accident that is going to leave him paralyzed from the waist down.
Also, it's now updated and on the home page of boxingscene here.
It's unfortunately true.

wow, i hope he recovers from it, i dont want to sound mean but from the times ive been to the usa i rarely see them wearing full leathers let alone a spine protector, more than likely he was a squid with a helmet and nothing else for protection, the shame here is wearing the proper protective clothing probably would have left him with bumps and bruises, a couple weeks of taking it easy then back to action. Such a shame.
My father just saw something terrible happen to someone on their motorcycle about two weeks ago. The guy got hit, flew off, and went back first into a stop sign. Those things truly are too risky for any athlete to risk riding.
Most footballer in england are ban by their managers from owning a bike..

Let's be honest here. Usually when a story like this breaks they try to spin it positive and only give you the truly bad news after a couple days.
It sounds like this was a really bad accident where ending up paralyzed is the best case scenario.
Doesn't look/sound good for PWill. Not sure if he has family or kids but thankfully he has made some money and they should be taken care of.
For anyone out there reading this. It's time to get off the damn bike. Think about the other people in your life first and yourself 2nd.
Nowhere is reporting this yet. The American sports media would be all over this by now. They love athletes ending their careers on motorcycles. I'm calling bullshit on this one for now.
Unfortunately it is not fake, sad news.
Paul Williams was always looking for that big money fight he deserved and when it came along this tragic incident happed.
He didn't lead a flash lifestyle and invested his money wisely for life after boxing.
Wishing the Punisher well and hopes he makes a full recovery.
Guess he found a way to dodge Canelo after all....
Seriously though that sucks for him. I hope he has a good rest of his life.
Someone please ban this dude.

YOU were b*tching at people for disrespect? Not even remotely funny.
Paul is one of those guys that I would never count out beating the odds and walking again someday. I say that without knowing whether its possible, but if there's a chance he can walk again, Paul's the guy to do it.
