First thoughts were Mosley easily but I think it's not as clear cut as once thought.
Both 3 weight Champions Cotto - 140,147,154, Mosley - 135,147,154
Cotto holds the victory over Shane in their encounter in a close fight.
Shane holds the biggest win between the pair with a win over Prime Oscar De La Hoya and did something Cotto failed to do in KOing Margarito (now the whole wrap scandal comes into play). Cotto did better vs Mayweather and Pacquiao than Mosley, even though Pacquiao stopped Cotto.
If Cotto gets maybe 1-2 more huge wins maybe he could take it? (e.g Canelo)
Big fan of both guys, but Shane early in his career was an absolute machine. I tend to ignore the last few years of his career, alot like Roy Jones or Real Deal. You cant deny how good he was in his day, but he should have called it years ago.
Shane was 30 when he beat oscar back in 2000(oscar was 27 and was at his absolute peak) and 33 in the second fight 2003, cotto have just turned 31.
Ring a bell
You have to look at shanes career up until the first oscar fight and compare it with Cotos run.
Shane is OLD as dust, God why is there not a law that prevence fighters from fighting past 33 because it screws there legacy up and I have to read comments form stupid kids that where sucking on there mumy`s tits at the time shane was a ****ing torndo of punches wrecking everyone.
Shane pre 31 was a ****ing speed freak with machine gun fast hands.
Prime shane vs Cotto would make the manny/cotto fight look like a sunday sparing session
I'm a Cotto fan but in the great scheme of things he's a good solid boxer and nothing more. Mosley edges it for me but his career is definitely tainted.
Mosley,Mosley was the undisputed WW Champion, and beat Champions for their belts..I don't believe Cotto has ever done this..I'd have to go with The Sugar Man...
1- He did
2- HE sure as H3ll defended his belts /Tittle with great opposition.
TS you need to understand the difference between better and greater. As of right now Mosley is the greater fighter even though his legacy will always be tainted by his PED use. As to who is better? Hard to say, Cotto has better boxing fundamentals (jab, defense, footwork) but Mosley had better physical abilities (speed, power, strength, punch resistance). Cotto beat a post-prime Mosley in a VERY close fight so this victory doesn't mean much. Basically they are neck and neck, I can't say that one is clearly better than the other.
Mosley's last 4 performances have been beyond pathetic. Thats how I will remember him. Cotto will be remember by avenging his lost to the cheater and giving Floyd Mayweather a hell of a fight. This is a no brainer.
Mosley
his big win over Oscar in 2000 beats anything on Cotto's resume
even past prime, Shane had a basically dead even fight with Cotto
his LW resume wasn't great, but his wins were spectacular there
then there's the big win over Tony, who'd just destroyed Cotto
Cotto has had a good career, but not as good as Shane has
he just doesn't have as many losses
but a couple of Shane's losses are from when he was shot anyway
Mosley's win over Oscar vs Cotto's win over Mosley
Oscar was in his prime, Mosley was not
Mosley wins based on that, cause I'm sure if Mosley were Cotto's age now, just about everyone Cotto beat Mosley would have beaten
Oscar was a far better fighter than Margarito, and Cotto's victory was tainted by the fact Pac more or less helped
Then we get to the steroid issue... That's where things get fuzzy for me
Cotto is more well known, so it's gonna be Cotto. Shane Mosely wasn't ever a huge draw. Cotto could headline and sell well. Big difference when it comes to whos remembered.
Most likely Miguel. Simply because he doesn't have the PED issue to question the validity of some of his wins like Mosley will when it's all said and done.
Taking that out of the equation the biggest win for either fighter would definitely be Mosley's victory over DLH in their first fight.
Sorry folks, I made a mistake. Cotto was a 140 lb WBO world tittle holder and defended it successfully 5 times all by KO. The Ring has him as never winning a 140 lb tittle. I guess Ring does not recognize the WBO. Next time I'll use Boxrex as my source to begin with. Considering this I must take back my statement that he is winning the poll on popularity. With Shane's use of steriods and these 5 new KO defenses of the 140 lb tittle that I overlooked I will change my vote to Cotto in a close race.
Mosley might be ruining his legacy lately but people need to remember the prime version. Dude was a savage. I like Cotto & I'm a big fan, but as of this instant, Mosley is the man. If Cotto can manage another title run, I'll probably change my mind.
Who did he beat besides Oscar and Margarito?
Mosley.
Cute poll results. Shane Mosley is the benefactor of some permanent hype for his reign at 135. "GOAT" kind of hype within the media and the hardcore fanbase, and Shane Mosley is also a former P4P #1. Don't get it twisted, kids. One of these 50 year old media dorks would try and make you feel stupid for suggesting Cotto is the better overall product.
