i dont think scully gave dawson the right instructions against hopkins much of the time, dont think he had him fighting the right fight either. not bad but i think someone like steward would be better. he would have dawson keeping his range, standing tall and steppin around hopkins when he charges.
scully is a good trainer but with steward i think dawson wouldve stopped hopkins and become a better fighter in the future. dawson should use his height more and not lean forward so much or move in so close. he shouldnt be flatfooted either, dawson has such great mobility and throws combinations while on the move as good as anyone in boxing.
i think even though scully is doing a good job there are trainers out there that could take dawson to another level, if not steward he would improve greatly under floyd sr again if they could get past their diffrences.

Dawson going back to Floyd Sr would greatly improve Dawson as a boxer, unfortunately Floyd Sr is an ***hole and said some things that Dawson will not forgive.
Stewart is on hard on his fighters, but he isn't an ***hole. So Dawson going back to Steward could happen.
Scully is just not a world class trainer, he's an amateur trainer, Dawson won't learn anything new under Scully. Scully had poor preparation for Ward.
I'm one of the few that was actually disappointed in the Hopkins bout. Dawson barley beat a boxer who was 47 years old who didn't even have a jab.
Scully did a great job. I think he has the best chemistry with Dawson out of all the trainers he's had. Not to take anything away from Scully, but I think Dawson looked his best when he was with Floyd Mayweather Sr. But somehow their relationship didn't work out.
I think some of you, especially the TS may have missed mentioning something here.
That Scully comes cheap, and Steward does not, which is probably the main reason Dawson let him go.
Dawson had problems with location when he dropped Stewart. I also heard Dawson had problems with the Kronk fighters. I think Scully did an excellent job, it's just that Hopkins is really difficult to look good against.
Scully should have told Dawson to use his left hand more, because Hopkins was open to the straight left. I don't know why Dawson wasn't using the straight left more often. Dawson despite being right handed, had a good straight left when he was with Mayweather Sr. and Eddie Muhammad. That's something Dawson and Scully needs to work on.
Newsflash : You astrology thread got deleted. Do NOT try to turn this thread into a clone of that thread. The admins don't like that.
This is a boxing thread, let's stick to the topic.
The admins dont? or you dont. Because Ive posted about a dozen astrological topics. None were ever deleted until this one, the one you seemed to not be able to get over for whatever reason.
What good is Steward if he can't connect or communicate with Chad? It's not always about X's and O's, especially with Dawson.
Scully has that bond with him and they communicate at their level, so that in itself is better for him as a fighter.
Some of the advice was a bit funny. "He's trying to land the right hand but as long as you're focused you'll be OK. Don't get countered by the right hand alright?" hmmm aren't you supposed to tell your fighter HOW not to get countered by a certain punch?
Thought Scully's instructions was on point, Dawson just didn't execute. Like Scully kept telling him stop waiting for the perfect shot just stay active but he just kept waiting. The right hook to the body was there for him just didn't throw it enuff.
TS cannot be serious.
Scully couldn't of given Dawson better advice inbetween rounds. He was constantly reminding him that he had to be aggressive and outwork Hopkins and Dawson was able to do it.
He kept Dawson on his game for bascially the whole 12 rounds and for Dawson that is something because he is normally a guy who takes rounds off.

strongly disagree. Scully kept Dawson's energy up and kept him levelheaded and composed after the serious cuts and constant head butts. I don't think he is the greatest tactician, but I think Dawson is fine in that area. He need someone to keep his energy and intensity level up.
Nice job, Iceman.
Steward is vastly overrated IMO, Dawson need to stick to one trainer and work hard and listen to their instructions, Not chopping and changing like a footballers wife changing clothes every 2 hours.
Scully was on point 100%.... A lot of the lapses was just Chad being Chad.
I agree with the first part, Scully was on point. But I didn't see any lapses from Chad, I think he kept his composure the whole night and executed his gameplan against a very crafty and dirty vet. Even if you beat a 47 year old Hopkins, you're going to look horrible doing it, it's just Hopkins' gameplan when things aren't going his way to stink the fight up.
Steward dont wanna train no lazy bum like Dawson. Dude only wants to train in his neighborhood and wont get away from his "temptations", So the only choice is to get a yes man who will train him in his own town.... not saying Scully is bad or anything
scully let dawson get mad too, even though dawson said he kept his composure after the fight thats not the case. he was both mad and frustrated and hopkins kept doing little things to rile him up and it kept working, got dawson headhunting and looking for one big shot which allowed hopkins to keep the pace down. dawson got careless too at times and walked into dumb **** he shouldnt have been hit with.
above all he just should have been busier, if he stood up tall and kept his range he wouldve been able to let his hands go better bcuz hopkins wouldnt be able to reach him. chad has such great footwork and ability to punch on the move, had he stayed lighter on his feet he couldve stepped back and landed on hopkins when he charges, then step around and land in combinations. instead scully told him to plant his feet which allowed hopkins to time him, get in close and clinch further slowing down the pace.
had dawson kept hopkins at the end of the stick like steward would have him doing and stepped around more at angles i think he could have controled the pace more, landed more to the body and got off more in combinations which would all wear hopkins down.
you cant stop hopkins at a 47 year old pace, sure. but dawson had the toold to make hopkins work harder but he didnt take advantage. he still won big but i think he couldve done better.
LOL and how would steward help dawson with that? and on the 2nd paragraph geez you make it sound so easy lol.
Impossible to look good against Bernard especially when his head is there to hit you with. Scully had to keep Chad focussed and he did, he wanted to give advises but Bernard isn't something you can emulate in the gym so you go with the flow. Scully is a product from Mac Buckleys Gym in Hartford Ct. and the emphasis there was clean fast boxing and utilizing multiple jabbing and combination work along with foot work for defensive purposes. Chad is from the New Haven Ct. gym known as Ring One and trained by Brian Clark who has the same basic philosophy. Certain areas of the country have different approaches to boxing and ofcourse different gyms use different tactics too. The two Ct. gyms are simular in many ways because Mac and I (former head trainer at Ring One) were in competition with each other for years and often worked in the same corners in the amatuers and pros. Chad feeling comfortable with Scully is easily understandable because of their backgrounds being simular.
I don't know Chad at all but I could hear the frustration and concern on Scully voice in between rounds just to employ that his hands be high and they be moving. Not much direction if any as far as punch choices just to keep punches in front of Bernard. Very tuff fight as to strategies when you face someone who thinks hes intitled to win just by showing up (Bernard).
As I said on another thread the ref looked good, he had some shakey rounds but finished strong! Ray
LOL scully did great. Dawson for some reason just does not let his hands go. Scully was begging dawson to throw more. He couldn't have told dawson any better advice.
