If you missed this the other day: Excellent @HBOboxing card in works for August: Pirog-Geale 160 unification main event & Trout-Dzinziruk. http://twitter.com/#!/danrafaelespn
Pretty good fights... The other promoters should get involved and put these fights in places where it can sell a couple thousand tickets because if you leave it to Gary Shaw this is going to an empty Chumash theatre.
I am doubting this will ever happen. Pirog-Geale as an HBO main event? Two basically unknown guys....?
Dan Rafael is one of the most reliable sources in boxing so I don't doubt much the validity of it being "in works"; and with Ken Hershman at the helm of HBO, it isn't unreasonable to think this doubleheader fight could be made.
Does anyone in the United States other than posters on boxing scene know any of these guys? I mean i like the fights and will watch but I can imagine now inviting my boys over for the fights and having them tell me who the **** are these guys.
I understand where you're coming from, but this is what should happen when good unknown fighters can't get a fight against known opponents; just match them against each other and hope for the best.
The other reasons are 1) This card would be cheaper than some one-fight HBO cards and 2) it'd be taking place when HBO doesn't have high expectations for ratings (for some reason they've tried to avoid the Olympics in the past).
They'll definitely be replaying the Jacobs KO in advance... I wouldn't watch the lead up to the fight if I were him.
Who gives a **** that it's a unification? Unification are only interesting when's there no clear champion. Pirog and Geale are fighting for a meaningless paper unification. As far as I'm concerned, Geale, Pirog, Lee, and Quillin are all on equal standing. And since when do you give a fuck about Geale? Do you seriously think Geale is significantly better than Lee and Quillin?
You have to be crazy if you think putting in 2 massive draws in contenders lee and quillin is better then pirog-gale:rofl:
Bullshiiit
Honestly i question you being a boxing fan. All you want is "big name fights". When an opportunity presents itself when we actually have 2 top MWs fighting eachother for a unification, all you want is bigger names like Lee and Quillin
Lee and Quillin :lol1:

As far as I'm concerned, Geale, Pirog, Lee, and Quillin are all on equal standing. I said this before. I wouldn't favor any of those four guys by any significant margin if they fought each other. They would all make good fights. And since when do you give a fuck about Geale? Do you seriously think Geale is somehow leagues ahead of Lee and Quillin in skill and talent? If you think belts means better fights, I'll have to question you being a boxing fan.
Yeah, that's what I was thinking, but if nobody watches the card, what exactly will it accomplish? If he wanted to groom them, they should be place in undercards of other popular fighters. Or put them against other known fighters. Pirog vs Lee or Quillin is equally as good as Pirog vs Geale except the other two are more well known. Or even Geale vs Lee or Quillin. Those matchups make way more sense than Pirog vs Geale.
Because people will watch them. And if they're good fights people will watch replays through word of mouth.
It's obviously gonna do poor live ratings but if 400,000 people watch it, that's probably 300,000 more people that would now know who they are than there was before the card.

Anywhere in the West is a bad idea. Pirog-Geale/Trout-Dzinziruk wouldn't sell any tickets in TX, NM, CO, AZ, NV, or CA. They need to do it where there's a really large Eastern European population. Somewhere on the East Coast, or even Chicago would be better in my opinion.
I agree with these locations.
I hope they make this happen there's enough diehards to appreciate both of these fights, they're both solid matchups.
I can remember watching Showtime fights when I first got it a few years ago and thinking to myself who are these guys, who cares it was a good scrap. Just like the UFC some of these guys come out of nowhere and put on a good show.
Bottom line, I think it should happen.
Nobody is complaining about the fights because for the most part we are all hardcore fans who will enjoy this card. I think people are just curious as to why HBO would televise this when its a fact that all of the fighters mentioned are virtually unknown to casual fans in the states who probably make up a large portion of HBO's audience.
HBO owes Dzinzurnik a date contractually.
Ya know, I really think Hershman's like fcuk it, I'm gonna make a card with some Europeans and try and groom one of them into a Martinez or Chavez opponent and one of them into a Canelo opponent.

LOL, yeah Texas is probably a bad idea. What about New Mexico or wherever Trout is from? He's the only American on this card...
I like the fights and HBO will probably get it for cheap, so I doubt they're going to expect big ratings.

I'm talking as if I own stock in HBO because that's exactly the perspective HBO uses to make fights. I'm just being skeptical that the fight will happen. This exact same card has been turned down by both HBO and Showtime in the past.

I didn't it words into you're mouth
You said hershman should get fired for even attempting to make this, when in fact He should get praised
You are actually more concerned about HBOs rating then actually seeing great fights:rofl: like you have stock in HBo or something

It should take place somewhere that has a big Russian and Ukrainian population. Those guys are more likely to bring in more tickets than Trout fans.
New York?
Anyway why are you so concerned about the business sense of this card then the actual fights that are taking place? I don't get it
Way to put words in my mouth. When did I say anything like that? I'm glad they're making Pirog vs Geale if it's true as I stated various times. I really want to see it. But don't be surprised the fight doesn't get made for the reasons I stated. It is a stupid move by HBO. I'm not deluding myself.
I'm guessing this will be on HBO World Championship Boxing which is more expensive than BAD, so I don't think this will be cheap. Somehow Garry Shaw always manages to get big dollars out of HBO.

How famous are these guys in Ukraine/Russia? If they have a solid fanbase then yeah, that does make more sense.

forgive some of these IDIOTS, if it doesn't include Pacquiao or Mayweather many of them don't even care about boxing :nonono:
Boxing is a WORLD WIDE SPORT, so trying to appeal to fans WORLD WIDE is great for the sport! That is the huge advantage Boxing has over the UFC... INTERNATIONAL APPEAL!

They must be trying to build a fan base for these guys in the states so they can get a title challenger for Martinez. I was gonna say HBO is trying to step their event game up after NBC's last event this weekend but these guys are kinda unknown to the general American public.
