another dumb statement by some idiot who dont understand the history or the struggle of africans in AMERICA. Ali's balls to stand up to the country for trying to use him for profit then leave him broken and damage after they used him, like they did Robinson and Joe Luis should be commended. Its easy to say whats right and wrong when your born a nobody in safe times like the idiot who said Ali was scared. Ali dedicated his sklls and gifts to GOD and his African people. He was very verbal about it and also very proud. No way was a man of hs statue and rank among the African American people going to parade around lke some circus act for a goverment that didnt respect his people. Times has changed a great deal now because of strong Black men like him .
:bryce:
Some of those comments i disagree with. And i think many blacks would disagree. Ali had his own agenda, he was known because of what he went through. In the end his own people let him down, the nation of Islam took most of all his money.
Thanks to some company that owns the Ali name and brand (pictures, autograph, name, video, etc.) Ali has money. Ali wasn't a saint, but he stood up to the government and said he was a Muslim.
Washington helped this nation be free from the rule of Britain and Jefferson was a founder of our Constitution. I won't go further cause that will make people even more sensitive, specially with the second class citizen thing and slavery.
I do begrudge him and if I was a real hater of him I would try to discredit anything he does but that's not the case since I've said he was a great boxer. I just don't like him as a person. No double standards here.
For real thats part of your reasoning. Washington help the nation be free of British rule but kept slaves and ruled them. Jefferson founded a constitution that said all men were created equeal and should be able to pursue life, liberty and happiness but yet he owned slaves. WOW the things people say.
It should be said the 4 faces that are on there now were not the original faces that were to be on there but thanks to the French guy who did the work. Originally it was to be famous persons that were from that state and this monument was done to attract people to this state. But now we see it as people that ment a lot to the U.S, i forget which indian chief was supposed to be on there along side these men but it wasn't or i've heard it on the other side of the mountain (which is a shame if true).
Ali wouldn't have fought or died for his country. He would have done boxing exhibtions for troop morale and he knew it. You're right though, he was scared. Probably scared of a Sergeant outboxing him.

Ali, Robinson, Leonard
. .. and the 4th one is debatable when there are so many legandary names to consider. I'd put Barrera in there just cos he is a favourite
Good ambassadors to the sport like Foreman and Marquez. I don't recall them having any serious issues inside and outside the ring. I think Louis also didn't cause any drama or hit women like Jack Johnson and his victory vs the Schm(German dude/can't recall name) was major at the time. Plus I think he served.
Foreman was a thug who use to mug people in Houston's 5th ward. Louis admitted to hitting and choking Lena Horne. There is dirt on almost any fighter you can pick that can be viewed any way you'd like to interpret it. Marquez isn't American so he doesn't belong on an American monument. No disrespect to him, I wouldn't put an American on a Mexican monument either.
Ill go with John L. Sullivan, Joe Louis, Robinson and Ali.
I like this. 3 of those is outstanding choices. I'm not so sure about Louis, although I have a hard time coming up with a better choice straight off the bat. The 3 others should be a shoe-in though.
*****s would say: "Floyd Jr., Floyd Sr., R. Mayweather, and Leonard Ellerbe"
*******s would say: "PAcquiao, Roach, Ariza, and Arum"
But seriously, I think Ali, Marciano, Leonard, Robinson
Ali's stance on Vietnam has become the stuff of legend. Like all legend, the truth, shrouded in mystique, is very elusive. The story most people believe is that the charismatic heavyweight champion stood up to the mighty United States government, suffered punishment and subsequently became an icon. But if we are to believe Mark Kram, in his book "Ghosts of Manila," the reality was somewhat different. Kram relates how it was the idea of Nation of Islam leaders for Ali to resist the draft. The frightened and impressionable young champion was essentially used by the people he trusted most.
I think Ali is a good man. He's led an amazing life and inspired millions by his actions, whether they were sincere or not. But the Vietnam episode in Ali's life has almost certainly been polished throughout the years in direct proportion to Ali's legend. I believe that there are two sides to every story...and the truth lies somewhere in between....
Wasn't the US government of the time trying to stand up against tyranny in attempting to halt the spread of communism?
Flawed thinking perhaps, but not necessarily the imposition of a tyrannical regime.
fighting a war in vietnam has nothing to do with protecting america and ali was smart enough to know that. he wasn't going to be a sheep that the military paraded around as propaganda to further their pro war cause. that was the best thing he ever did in his life. better than anything he did in boxing. a real american stands up against tyranny, they don't go along with it and pretend it's ok because their government says so. that's called ignorance.
Excellent, excellent post!!
