“Who? Give me a break” - Larry Merchant responds to Guillermo Rigondeaux http://www.examiner.com/boxing-in-las-vegas/who-give-me-a-break-larry-merchant-responds-to-guillermo rigondeaux “Who? Give me a break,” Merchant fired back, adding in a bit of sarcasm. “This is a guy who has had nine professional fights. He’s a good fighter, and I don’t blame him for trying to build his case, but there’s less than no clamor for that fight. I think Rigondeaux is another fighter who has no fan base in America and he wants to fight a top guy, that’s perfectly understandable. He’s going to try to get the ear of the boxing media, that’s perfectly understandable.”
It’s not that Merchant is opposed to the fight, but for the moment he doesn’t see the need in it.
“It’s not a fight that I think is in their best interest now,” Merchant continued. “ 29 years old I think, he’s moving up in weight, he’s trying to seize his moment to get the payoff on a long career and if he has an opportunity to fight Arce, who would you rather see? Donaire and Arce or Donaire or Rigondeaux?”
People are getting carried away. Donaire has had exactly ONE FIGHT at 122. If he was already talking about going to 126 or something, then thats another matter. But there's nothing wrong with doing an Arce fight next. At THIS point, why fight a guy (Rigo) who cant sell 3 tickets?
i don't totally agree with merchant but when a little-known fighter try to criticize hbo and their commentators about not recognizing your presence don't expect a apologetic response. besides, merchant did not really ask donaire about future fights. maybe he's only allowed that much time for the interview and then the focus of questions shifted to donaire's bloodied hands.
Donaire-Arce for me... seems to be more entertaining.
If I wanted to see who the best at 122 was then the Rigo fight... but I feel like getting entertained
yeah and that's one of the reasons it's time for larry to move on imo. He's very negative towards boxers and only really hypes up the big punchers & brawlers. It's annoying when someone is masterfully boxing a guys ears off and larry makes comments like "wake me up when something happens" as if he's some casual fan that can't appreciate boxing skills.
agreed. and that always been my main gripe about larry. in most other sports u would rarely if ever get an announcer on live tv talking about how a fight/match/game is boring because a certain team/player doesnt play the game your way. but larry gets away with it.
Great to see HBO commentators are still boxing promoters :puke:
You'd expect a comment like that from a Bob Arum or a Lou DiBella not a commentator. A commentator should recognize it would be the #2 fighter fighting the #3 fighter and it's is a very interesting matchup.
Lolz. True that. But I guess he can argue that it is better to be a commentator to a fight that would likely end in a KO rather than a "boring" points win. :D.
People Let's not forget rigo won 2 gold medals. the kid has been doing this for a long time (2000-2004) and had over 400 amateur fight.
It's not about about tryn to beat the best at this point in donaires career it's about making that money. I would much rather watch the kid (rigo) with 9 fight fight donaire but we all know arce is next due to the risk.
If you want the best fight the best.
Donaire wants no part of Rigo trust dat.
If I'm Donaires promoter I would make the Arce fight because the fight would be more exciting and Donaire would look great. Also more people know who Arce is and the fight would generate more money especially if its held in Cali.
Yes absolutely. From a business perspective the fight makes perfect sense, it's low risk/high reward. However, from a neutral boxing fan's standpoint, it just means we're gonna have to wait longer to see Donaire tested against the genuine challenges in the 122lb division.

but arce beat vasquez more convincingly than donaire.
I don't know how you came to that conclusion. Arce/Vasquez was fought tooth and nail. Arce got dropped, yet rallied late to force a stoppage at the very end of a fight which was dead even on two of the judge's scorecards. Donaire wobbled Vasquez early, dropped him in the middle rounds and won comfortably on points. It wasn't an emphatic KO like we've seen from him in the past, but it was far more convincing than Arce's win because Vasquez never looked to be in with a chance of actually winning the fight.
id rather see Donaire-rigo than Donaire-Arce
Same, but the Rigondeaux talk is a little out of hand right now. It's fine to think he can beat Donaire, but people are acting like he's dominated the division and should be Donaire's next fight without question.
id rather see Donaire-rigo than Donaire-Arce
i think only donaire, arum, garcia, and now apparently merchant would disagree with you. unfortunately they're the ones pulling the strings. tossers.
Donaire Rigo is a much more significant and competitive fight. I guess for casual fans a Donaire Arce fight would be more attractive because Arce is more well known.
I think almost everyone would prefer to see Donaire-Rigondeaux since it's a fight that would actually be competitive.
