"I watched some tape on him. I've seen the type of skills that he got. To me, he reminds me a lot of a Bryan Vera. He throws a lot more punches and he's up and down, meaning that he'll move, but you know, as far as me, I'm going to always apply that certain type of pressure. They say he's an inside fighter too, but I doubt that's going to happen. Just like everybody I've recently fought or have been fighting, you know, some guys be inside fighters and some guys be boxers, but every time I fight a person that's an inside fighter and I end up trying to fight him the way he knows how to do, they go to boxing. So okay, cool, you know, I make them go to what they only know, and that's to try and stay in that paint, and I just tear a piece of their soul, little by little, round by round. Some people just feel that punch and they can't take it...my eagerness to win and please my fans is most high because I gave them a bad error. I took away from them my time. I took away from them my skill and my ability to fight. I just want to be able to tell my fans, man, thank you for supporting me. The old Kirkland is back. I come to win and I definitely come to show and put on a good show," stated hard-hitting jr. middleweight contender James Kirkland, who talked about his victory over Alfredo Angulo, his upcoming clash with Carlos Molina, and much more. He's a KO artist, deal with it.
HA. And what early knockouts are you referencing? Harry Joe Yorgey? Wait was it Gabriel Rosado?
Certainly it couldn't have been the only 3 decent fighters he's fought, Cintron(Loss by UD12...stopped by Margarito twice and Canelo Alvarez), Joel Julio(stopped him in the 11th), or Kirkland(got stopped in 5).
Yes, absolute concussive puncher you are so right.
i said that angulo is a massive puncher referring to how strong he is.........you brought up ko percentages
"I didn't say Angulo wasn't a big puncher I said he wasn't a massive KO puncher like you were alluding to"
i never said massive "ko" puncher. i just said massive puncher............
i corrected you..........you should have said angulo didn't have massive one punch power. rather then stating anything to do with "ko" because angulo is beastly as far as ko percentages go.
canelo doesn't have more power then angulo....maybe cotto has (but only slightly) cotto also gets tired quicker then angulo. & martinez doesn't fight @ 154
:theyareon
I did not bring up KO% I just said he's not a massive puncher because he's not. The adjectives you used were misleading to me.
Nothing like Margarito. Save 2 fights Angulo stopped all his opponents in under 6. We're talking 15 of his 17 stops in 20 fights.
He's a monster puncher.
And now we don't account for level of competition. Lets keep rolling.
Now you're putting words into my mouth.
What actually happened was you said Angulo was a massive puncher. Generally, massive puncher connotates a one punch concussive puncher.
I said Angulo was a heavy handed puncher but wasn't a massive puncher(meaning he's not a one punch guy). I think it's pretty proven that he's a high workrate guy with heavy hands that wears his opponents down, kind of like Margarito(though I think he's a bigger puncher than Tony).
I think Canelo, Kirkland, Cotto, definitely Martinez if he came down, are all around the same range in the power department. Martinez has one punch pop but none of the rest really do.
Kirkland and Angulo are heavy handed pressure fighters. Cotto and Canelo are heavy handed and quick with their accurate combinations....but all similar in the end IMO.

Kirkland is rapidly becoming the most exciting fighter on the planet, he ha alot of power and walks into punches two traits combined that sells tickets. Which also means he won't go far or last very long.
dude, you said that angulo wasn't a big ko puncher........that means you're referring to ko percentages......did you mean he doesn't have one punch ko power? but you didn't say that?
& if thats what you mean who has one punch ko power @ 154

I think any talented boxer with fast, precise hands and a good chin can beat kirkland. Don't get me wrong he's not invincible (no one is). Every style of fighting has their kryptonite and kirkland is no exception.
Lara is the guy I would worry most about if I were kirkland. But I'd LOVE to see Kirkland vs Cotto & Canelo, very even matches imo.
I agree with every word. Cotto & Canelo are very even matches. If Kirkland can weather the assault for the first 3-4 rounds I think he'd walk them down, but that's a big if.
Kirkland fits right into a potentially really exciting division. I'd pay good money to see all of these guys fight.
actually if you want to go strictly by ko percentages angulo is a massive ko artist. he has 20 fights & 17 of those coming by knock out........
dude, did you watch the fight? angulo hit him with multiple good shots.......he landed a right hook on the jaw & it snapped his kirklands head back......as blood flew out of his mouth. (are you serious?) you need to go back & watch all of the shots angulo landed........to say that angulo landed that one shot & nothing else reveals your true bias........angulo didn't blow his load he couldn't keep up with kirklands stamina........you guys posting on boxingscene have no clue what type of condition wolf beats into kirkland. she has him sparring 4 guys at once, 15 16 17 round sessions, while one arm being tied behind his back.......she makes him run all day & all night. she destroys this kid........you guys posting on here have NO clue what you're talking about.............angulo was not gonna match kirklands pace therefore he took a beating............
if they had a rematch he would get ko'd sooner.................
i can't wait for kirkland vs lara.
but first, let us deal with kirkland vs molina.
Yes cause KO% is something you should go by. My goodness. Angulo stops people by wearing them down not by sparking them out.
The way his face was contorted from a punch means nothing. My god you are reaching.
Molina.
I got kirkland.
Nah I got Kirkland in that fight.
I don't think Kirkland is some bum, jeez. I just think that when he faces a guy with quick hands that will be able to catch him with crisp, precise punches that he doesn't see coming he might not stand up to the punch. Or maybe he will and maybe your guys are right that he's just tight in the 1st. I'm just saying he hasn't shown that to me yet.
But Molina aint a sharp puncher. He's a gritty guy who punches kind of like angulo, wide and slow, and just outworks people. That's a guy Kirkland should walk through.
here is one, go to 18:24 of this video and you'll see angulo land a big right hand right on kirkland's chin, that makes his head turn violently sideways and spit fly from his mouth:
http://sport-rewind.blogspot.com/2011/11/james-kirkland-vs-alfredo-angulo-full.html
Were you referring to the exchange in replay? I mean that doesn't mean much to me. Cotto violently snaps people's heads back with his jab but it doesn't mean much.
He was slow and his punches were lethargic and this was clear in real time.
I'm not against Kirkland man, I just don't think the Angulo fight was was at all indicative of him proving his chin.
I think he'll walk through Molina though...
Me too(great fight). And with what Angulo had left he could have gotten a 10 foot head start, crow hopped, and hit Brian Viloria with his hands tied behind his back with his best shot and he wouldn't have knocked him down.
Not sure what you're trying to bet...Kirkland against who?
Molina.
I got kirkland.
but kirkland doesn't run at all & is very humble........kirkland is exciting as it gets, but yet you still have people in this very thread attacking him to hell.
in realty this forum is literally infested with insecure twits........:owned2:
:boxing: this. i THINK KIRKS going to spring a few surprises in 2012.
If I could find the video I'd prove you wrong man, I've watched the fight a dozen times. Angulo nails kirkland with a big shot, 100% fact.
Kirkland even showboated after getting hit in one of those rounds...like I said, dudes are sleeping on Kirkland.....that Ishida lost is playing too much in dude's heads the wrong way.....he was outta shape, fresh outta the pen after like 2 yrs in and on top of that he didn't have Anne in his corner.....I wonder how dudes feel about Tito's chin?!?...I mean, he got dropped numerous times as well!!

i want to double up on points. Wanna bet 75 mil?
I got kirkland.
Not sure what you're trying to bet...Kirkland against who?
Come on man, no he didn't. He was incapable of throwing a monster shot after the first round, he had absolutely nothing on anything he threw after the 1st it was plainly obvious.
I'm not trying to hate on Kirkland I like him, but he's still got questions to answer about this chin.

actually Angulo not only landed a couple big shots in the first round after the knockdown, he landed a monster shot in round 3 or 4 I believe it was and Kirkland ate it like it was a peanut butter m & m.

i would LOVE for him to fight a guy that will land precise shots from all different angles (thats the type of guys ann has him sparring with)...........in fact i want his next fight to be ether lara or canelo.
kirkland & wolf will slowly expose that he's back at his best..........first it was he can't take heavy blows (he murdered angulo) wait for the lara & canelo fights
(well, the lara fight because canelo will just run from kirkland as always)
btw if angulo isn't a big puncher i don't know who is @ 154. i don't know too many 154 pounders stronger then angulo..........
I didn't say Angulo wasn't a big puncher I said he wasn't a massive KO puncher like you were alluding to.
I mean if Kirkland proves he can take those kind of punches than good for him, he's nothing but good for the sport. Fire in the ring I'll be tuning in every time he fights. I'm just not convinced yet that he can take sharp punches is all...
I mean Angulo hit him with one decent shot than completely blew his load while landing pretty much nothing....not the best barometer. What it showed he had is guile and heart to survive, which is impressive in and of itself.
i think calming him down in the first round is more of a issue then his chin...........
in the ishida fight wolf wasn't in his corner & he was fat.
angulo is a massive puncher..............wolf has already stated that she's going to get him VERY calm in the 1st round & work his work rate up little by little.
this is bad news to the laras of the world who will be looking to catch him early on.........
Angulo is heavy handed but he's not a massive puncher. Neither is Ishida.
I'm not saying he can't be successful and he's shown in the past that he could take a punch from guys like Julio...but for whatever reason he's been vulnerable since he got out of prison. Maybe that will straighten itself out, maybe it won't.
I'll tell you though, I don't wanna see him with an accurate puncher that will land clean, precise shots from all different angles though....
Light middleweight can be a big weight class in the next years or so, but the fights have to be made, Kirkland should have been pencilled in with another good fight/name after beating angulo.
Carlos Molina arguably has wins over Chavez Jr and Lara and has a lopsided win over Cintron.
He's a very worthy opponent. As sad as it is, his resume at 154 is as good as anyone's right now...
Love watching this guy but he's gotta get realistic about his chin. Thinking the ishida knockdowns were flash knockdowns.
The Angulo knockdown, his body went limp. It was like Marquez getting knocked down against Pac in the 2nd fight. He was most definitely hurt he just did a great job recovering and he gets a ton of credit for that.
But his chin is most definitely an issue.
