IT MUST BE THE CORNED BEEF By Ed de la Vega, DDS PhilBoxing.com Mon, 19 Dec 2011 Sergio Martinez, the Argentinean middleweight recently called pound4pound king Manny Pacquiao a fake. I wonder does he even know what he is talking about? Martinez lately has been making a lot of noise and calling out people to fight him. But no one of note seems to be paying attention to him. Not Pacquiao and not Mayweather. In fact WBC has to force Cesar Chavez Jr to defend his crown against Martinez in order for the Argentinean to get a decent fight. But Martinez will not be able to fill out the place with his fans. It will be the Mexicans backing Chavez who will do so. The reason is obvious. Martinez is not worth his weight in PPV. Read: He is still a nobody. No matter what he does, no matter who he beats, he simply can’t put butts in an arena worth a second look by the big named TV outfits. Martinez does not have the charisma of a Pacquiao or even the notoriety of Mayweather worth a PPV buy from an average boxing fan. So he resorts to ugly pronouncements in a losing effort to gain attention. Oftentimes it’s difficult to understand why a fighter wishing to get recognition would do such a thing. Why would he rather run his mouth off instead of working hard to develop a decent fan base? But, I have a theory. He must have been over-filling himself up with Argentinean corned beef and he over-dosed. Now he is full of gas and he needs to blow it out through his mouth. Martinez is trying to irritate Pacquiao so that the Filipino spit fire will at least pay attention to him and perhaps accepts a fight with him. But that is not happening anytime soon. First Martinez is not big enough to generate the money Pacquiao is used to. Second Martinez is way bigger than Pacquiao. But if he is willing to drop to 148 lbs., I am sure Pacquiao will call his bluff. Perhaps Martinez should focus on getting ready for his mandated fight with Cesar Chavez Jr. because if he is overlooking the son of the Mexican legend, he maybe in for a rude awakening. The young Chavez may at first glance appear to be an easy fight for Martinez. But the youngster has changed and he no longer is the spoiled brat that he was before. He is now an accomplished fighter and is fast developing to be a good hard nosed boxer. It would not be a surprise if he will give Martinez a good run for his money. Chavez may even pull a surprise and put Martinez where he truly belongs. The loser’s bracket.
