The blatant disrespect for Hopkins on these boards is disgusting. Toney had lost to fighters with less ability than Hopkins in his prime, and was very hittable despite his defense Hopkins would win and he would win easily at that 9-3 Hopkins.
^^^ This. :lol1:
Feel me?! I love Bernard, but a prime and focused Toney was a different animal. He's a boxing tragedy to me, he could've been so much more with some damn discipline.
i think toney's inside game is stronger. hands down, toney was the more talented boxer.
it would be close, but i think toney would pull it off.
Toney's inside game is his biggest strength but his weakness as well as he could be a bit one dimensional on his approach, Hopkins on the other hand has bag full of tricks with different approaches, Ill have to go with the more versatile fighter, B-Hop all day.
Toney due to styles, but I aint counting out Hopkins. Common opponent, RJJ, hopkins won 4 rounds, Toney got embarrassed. And hopkins in the 90s didnt have the output problems he did in his 40s
By prime, I assume we mean James Toney on his A game.
Bernard is simply no match for that James Toney
I'd lean on Toney aswell.
Ideally at 168. Shame Hopkins never ventured there.
I'd even go as far as saying Toney sparks Hopkins late if this were at 160-168... Maybe round 10, Toney at that weight was too fast, slick and powerful. Dude was a beast offensively and defensively.
Prime James toney. Hopkins in his prime was more straight ahead brawler. Toney would have beat him almost as bad as he beat barkley. Maybe that's why Hopkins never moved up to 168 or 175 until the coast was clear.
Toney in great shape? Toney by close decision. Hopkins is best at exploiting a fighter's weaknesses, but Toney at his best didnt have many glaring ones. Exellent infighting, defense, handspeed, combination punching...I see Hopkins having success with sneaky tactics, but it wont be enough.
Their primes were at different weights. I agree with the poster who said it would be reminiscent of Toney-McCallum, but with a bit more of a clear edge to Toney (especially at 168). Toney by maybe three rounds.
Although I find toney way more entertaining and all I gotta go with hopkins UD ... watch Toney v Nunn with the knowledge that Toney isn't going to knock Bhop out
