Margo seems like a unique situation to me.
13 month layoff
At the age of 33.
1-2 in his last three fights.
In two of those fights he took vicious beatings.
Needed two major surgeries on his eye
Now he's in a major fight with no tune-ups before hand
Can somebody cite precedence for all this and a win?
I'm approaching this from a logical perspective.
No hate here.
I do, but If the guy he beat was not very good I might take it more into account. But Cotto is still a decent fighter who's been more active.
You can't assume this is like Kermit fights, because all these things have happen to Margo in between.
Going into the original fight Margo had just destroyed Cintron in a high octane close quarters fight. Great prep for a big fight.
Margo fought a Gomez like he fought a sparring session. Crappy prep for Margo.
This time around no fight for Margo leading up.
Cotto fought Mayorga. Very decent prep for Margo
Makes for a closer fight IMO.
The style matchup still favors Margy, the weight favors Margy and he has the psychological edge (Cotto is more focused on the handwraps controversy than the task at hand). Rusty or not, Margy has a lot of advantages and if the fight takes place in Denver or some other city at a high altitude, forget it.
Sugar Ray Leonard had two surgeries as well...one to repair a detached retina prior to his 5 year layoff....and another minor surgery just prior to his first comeback fight. then he went on to fight hagler and got the decision
so he was off for 5 years, went up 10 pounds to middleweight, and beat hagler who hadn't lost a fight in like 10 years.
This was the first example that came to mind...and probably the best one.
It's absolutely insane when you think about it.
That would've been the equivalent of Floyd retiring in 2007 after Hatton and coming back TODAY...to fight Sergio Martínez...no tune-up, nothing.
Of course, it would still pale in comparison. Leonard and Hagler were both something else, especially Hagler. He RULED the 160 division with an iron fist. For Leonard to go up against a dangerous guy like that, above his prime weight class, off of a 4 year lay off, without a tune-up? Leonard had balls...
Julian Jackson had 2 retina surgeries in 1990. According to wiki he was then denied a license in UK and had to move a title fight to Spain, which he won. He then took 11 months off, maybe unrelated.
Good example.
Sugar ray probably the best example your gonna get, of course Sugar had skills that Margs can only dream of and Ray didnt depend on being able to be the last man standing to get the W.
Something to be mentioned about Sugars win over Hagler:
Hagler himself seemed at the end of a very active career (Ray was his 65th pro fight boys), when they met he had had only 3 bouts in 3 years. His bout before facing Leonard was 13 months prior and was a brutal back and forth victory over John The Beast Mugabi, great fight! Stylistically this was a good match up for Ray. So on paper decent comparison with a bit more examination not so much.
Doesn't matter tho I think both guys match up well and both hate each other so much we the fans are guaranteed a great fight while it lasts.

You need to take into account the fact that he's rematching somebody he already beat by knockout.

that alone puts him in a class of his own, be hard press to find another boxer that went thru that and still fighting let along fighting on the headline
I know Israel Vazquez had a few surgeries on his skin above his eye.
Which made it so easy to cut him open in the 4th Marquez fight.

Iran Barkley, 30 years old, lost to Duran then Nunn then got a severe beat down from Benn where he had to have some major eye surgery and a year lay off, 4 fights and 2 years later he beat Hearns.
Most similar situation I can think off, Barkley did win the 3 fights before Hearns though.
