I like how people are mentioning top 10 ATG's losing against each other, to try to defend why it would be okay for Pacquiao to get owned by the M&M boys.
If Pacquiao loses to Mayweather and then Marquez, it would just show how people were right that he just had great matchmaking and only fought guys who were there "to fight" and "come forward". And as soon as he was faced with a true challenge of a style, he looked average. People will then see that he really did duck Raheem, Guzman, Casamayor in 2006-2008.
PERFECT.
Not only that when you add in the Only fighting fighters coming of losses and catch-weights. It all adds up to great match-making on a epic scale.
I keep asking when did Cotto and Cheatto become anything more than "also rans"? Arum protected Cotto from Floyd for years, claiming he was too green. And Cheatto that dude was putting cement in his gloves lol. Plz come with something else.
We can discuss why Leonard vs Hagler didn't happen years prior to 1987, we can also talk about why Aaron Pryor vs Sugar Ray Leonard never happened. But at the end of the day, all you can judge is the fights that actually happened. Could Floyd have beaten both Cotto and Marg? Quite possibly, but it'll always be left up for debate and as it stands, both Cotto and Margarito faced the top WWs in the last 4 years. Don't blame Top Rank for putting on the majority of those fights. The history books show wins, not who the promoter was and why this and that fighter chose not to fight.
Not really. I mean, in the sense that he couldn't be considered the best fighter of all time, but that's a ridiculous thing to say NOW, without those two losses.
In general, however, he'd still be the best Asian fighter of all time. He'd still have won all those alphabet titled in all those divisions. He'll still have multiple wins over Marquez, Barrera and Morales, stopping the latter two. He's also been a legit champion in 3-4 divisions, moving up incredibly. He's also still a highly-skilled fighter. He also still has wins over Ricky Hatton, Antonio Margarito and Miguel Cotto.
He'd still be a Hall Of Famer. Could his fans call him the greatest? No. But, his legacy, long-term, would be in tact.
Would it damage his legacy?
Depends on who you ask after his career is over.
But nothing has changed in the last 6 years. Manny beats ALL punchers and brawlers that stand in front of him and loses or has close fights with boxers.
to me it would damage his legacy. Him losing to an average fighter or a bum would prove he is past it but him losing to 2 of the best pure boxers to ever do it and while on 24/7 they keep talking about how great he looks in camp so you cant say he's done.
Floyd has had like 4 fights in 4 years and if he lost to Pac & Sergio to finish his career, it would hurt his legacy also. It doesnt mean it craps on both guys legacy but it will definitely damage it.
Would it damage his legacy?
I don't think it would damage it. Just prove its not as great as everyone built it up to be. Which was the next great hope to dethrone Mayweather. He will always have the FOTD accolade, however they will say that he WAS the fighter of the decade that ran through a beaten division while Mayweather was "retired".
But if Mayweather beat him and if he was never able to decisively beat JMM, I Don't think it will HURT his legacy, but will keep people in check when saying he's an ATG, the best that ever did it etc etc etc.
it would just show that he is past it...I think it might immediately damage it, but after a few years people would have better perspective on it and the damage would be gone as far as ATG status goes.
how does that prove he was past it? Like Floyd isnt the other P4P star and like JMM isnt a top notch fighter who some think beat Pac in there first 3 fights

I agree 110% another excellent post from my homey KJ. :fing02:

Legacies can only be written once a fighter retires. Only thing pac should worry about is making the Mayweather fight, and not leaving it up to his promoter Bob Arum.

Yes, it would hurt his legacy. In my mind, it would prove he was on steroids when he was beating De La Hoya, Hatton, Cotto, Clottey, Margarito, etc.
If either guy dominates him and he doesn't look anything like he did from 2008-2011, then that's the first thing that would come to my mind: this guy was on roids.
Would it damage his legacy?
No, it means he fought the best unlike some other fighters of his era. Ali lost his fair share of fight, but no one gives a **** because he fought all comers.
It wouldn't damage it anymore than Leonard drawing with Hearns in their 2nd fight or Duran getting KO'd by Hearns and qutting against Leonard. At the end of the day, your legacy is and will always be based on your complete body of work. If Pac loses to Floyd, then JMM in a 4th fight, yea, it's not a good look, but it's not going to change what Pac has done in his career already. He along with both Floyd and JMM is certified HOF when all is said and done. Anything else after that is just debate like it is every other fighter in history.
floyd would get pac on the decision but lol at stopping him.
technically, and specifically in the counter-punching depart, floyd and marquez are just on another level than pac.
i wouldn't think it would hurt his legacy. you can't beat them all.
