ESPN
1. Floyd Mayweather Jr http://espn.go.com/photo/2011/0914/box_g_mayweather12_65.jpg
Hits: Even after 16 months out of the ring following his near shutout of Shane Mosley in May 2010, Mayweather returned to action on Sept. 17 and showed not the slightest bit of rust. Still fast and possessing great defense and underrated power, Mayweather knocked out Victor Ortiz (albeit in controversial fashion) in the fourth round to reclaim one of the titles he had previously given up. Now, instead of disappearing on another long layoff, Mayweather has announced plans to return on May 5, ideally against Manny Pacquiao -- if Pacquiao's people will come to the bargaining table.
Misses: It's great that Mayweather seems to be showing real interest in finally facing Pacquiao, but since Pacquiao just fought, how about giving him a little bit of time to unwind before insisting on a negotiation right now? Where was that kind of urgency at any point in the past few years?
2. Manny Pacquiao http://espndeportes-assets.espn.go.com/2003/photos2008/0716/a_pacquiao_manny_s.jpg
Hits: Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez, who had already produced two memorable battles in featherweight and junior lightweight title bouts, met for the third time Nov. 12 and gave fight fans a worthy trilogy with another outstanding and highly competitive fight. With Pacquiao's victory, the path is wide open for him to at long last meet Mayweather in the fight the world wants to see.
Misses: Pacquiao, who was a massive favorite to beat Marquez because they were fighting at welterweight, looked as vulnerable as he has in a long time. Although he eked out a majority decision, few would have quarreled had Marquez gotten the win or had the fight been ruled a draw. Pacquiao looked confused at times and lacked snap on his punches in a less-than-stellar outing. It just wasn't the kind of performance we have come to expect from Pacquiao, especially in light of the fact that Marquez had been wiped out by Mayweather in 2009 in his only other welterweight fight. Although a fourth fight with Marquez is certainly warranted at some point, it absolutely should not be next, which is what Top Rank's Bob Arum, Pacquiao's promoter, is talking about pursuing. Mayweather should be next, and it's going to have to be up to Pacquiao to stand up to Arum and tell him to make a deal. Period.

The Latest: Mayweather says he's secured the MGM Grand for May 5 and wants to make "the biggest fight out there" -- and it's no secret what that is. But will Pacquiao be in any hurry to make it happen after getting touched up by an opponent who is stylistically identical to Floyd?
2. Manny Pacquiao

The Latest: The only eight-division champion in history won a razor-thin decision over Marquez on Nov. 12. Bob Arum says a fourth Marquez fight should (and could) be next, but most fans would rather see a showdown between the fighters who rank 1-2 on virtually every pound-for-pound list.

I agree with the top 3.
Looking at there physical appearance for this fight Maybe Manny tried not "Juicing" for this fight and JMM tried "Juicing" for this fight. Just Sayin.
Pac win against Marquez < Floyd win weight cheating Marquez = Floyd p4p #1? or maybe because he sucker punched Ortiz to victory?
LOL Floyd weighed 150 pounds on fight night against Ortiz and Marquez weighed 150 against Pacquiao this past Saturday so stop bringing up the weight. Just face it the pound for pound champ struggled with a 38 year old lightweight while the the number 2 gy walked right through that lightweight.

Or maybe because the p4p #1 shouldn't struggle with a 9-1 underdog. MAybe because of the struggle dan decided to put floyd #1. Its not such a big deal is it.
The ring rankings are the most trustworthy. They know Pac is the best because he was due a close fight, otherwise he would be superhuman. Its good Pac had a close fight.
JMM was only a winner in the sense he did much better than expected so JMM should now leave it at that and stop saying he thinks he won when he knows he didnt.
JMM can leave that fight with his head held high, just like Morales could after the maidana fight.
If your arguement is you can't drop from the top spot unless you lose, well floyd never lost. If your argument is well floyd went on vacation, Bob just said manny is doing the same thing.

Funny, i thought they based it on all the fights both fighters have had. My guess is ESPN realized both floyd and manny have won 12 decisive rounds over JMM each. Floyd of course is 12/12 manny 12/36, evn though he is 2-0-1 against JMM.
I laughed HARD reading that ****. Oh wow.
Espn changed their rankings based on Pac not performing as expected, not because he lost. That is not a very strong case to make the change.
Ring Magazine retained Pac and they explained clearly why.

People giving huge credit to the suckerpuncher Floyd can't be serious. Pac-Marquez and Floyd-Marquez can't even be compared stylistically wise. Everyone who saw Floyd-Marquez can tell you it was a boring fight, because Floyd was scared of Marquez, and wouldn't play the aggressor at any point, despite coming in over the contracted weight limit, and being a bigger man already. One of the most pathetic mismatches ever is compared to one of the most competitive matchups in recent years.
GREEN K
this thread needs to be closed
everyone who seen 24/7 know marquez was a fast welter and was able to execute better with a scientific training and diet
and top that off, marquez didnt fight like a counterpuncherer against FLOYD, he was the aggressor.. to put it simply, marquez didnt bring his A game, he brought his aggressive game which is not what he does best at all therefore the floyd win over marquez hardly counts
head to head match up
ricky hatton fought mayweather at a catchweight, hardly his weight, paid for it when he got KTFO, what did ricky hatton do? go back down to his weight class where he is undefeated and baited manny pacquiao to come and fight him.. result .. 3 ROUND KO
pac win > floyd........... floyd didnt destroy hatton, he knocked him out, pac made him in a 5 minute coma...
coma > being wobbled for a few seconds
shane mosley fight- shane was blood drained we all know that and he paid for it when he gassed from the 2nd round all the way to the 12th, he was the aggressor, he brought his fight but he didnt outpoint floyd
shane fought pac a few months later no blood drain no excuse, what happens was the most cowardice display of a bigman running away from a little man
pac win over shane > floyd
their last respective fight
floyd fought victor ortiz whos ring experience show he doesnt belong in the ring with the veterans like floyd, floyd won and he should win and he did and that win is lesser than pac's last win over marquez where he got the majority decision because whos victor next to marquez???? who? nobody
even a loss to marquez by pac is greater than a win by floyd over ortiz... he could do it 1 thousands times too and a loss to marquez by pac is still 1000x better because of what jmm brings to the ring when he had the scientific diet
ESPN knows their ranking is horse****, its base on emotion and not logic, mayweather should not even be listed in those rankings at all
more than likely, they demoted pac not because floyd deserve cus he certainly didnt after sucker punching ortiz-nobody to a pathetic KO but they did it to pander to the pandomonium of mexicans who cry that JMM shoulda won when in reality.. if you watch the fight carefully pac won
yes this is all some emotional, throw the mexican a bone bs so that even though jmm is not the winner.. hey at least pac is not number 1 pound for pound..
CLOSE THREAD.. this post is loaded with rational sense too much for flomos and illogical jmm fans
What happened to style make fights? Oh that only applies to when Floyd beats a guy better then Pacquiao.
Well, Fair enough.
Well just hope this would not be the reason to stall the negotiation in Floy-Pac again, As Floyd can demand another B.S. Lion share.
If you are looking to blame anyone for the fight not happening look no further than Mannys boss it’s pretty obvious Arum is holding this fight back and as far as I’m concerned he has shown little or no desire to make that fight.
I have Pac 4th as i believe Marquez beat him so Marquez is my no2 and Martinez no3.
Well, Fair enough.

I love it!
Manny sliding down from the top spot.
Manny being criticized and challenged.
Manny becoming the underdog again.
Manny the biggest ducker in the history of the sport
I agree with your last point.....
