counterpunching is an offense coming from a defensive stance. floyd does not commit to full counterpunching mode like jmm does. i don't know how people could view floyd as a better counterpuncher than jmm. now if you will combine defensive and counterpunching skills then floyd is better.

They are different fighters. Marquez would lure Pac in, step back, and fire combinations matching Pac punch for punch as Pac's momentum carried him forward into JMM's trap. Floyd counters mostly in single shots. He would step back and fire back a straight right using his usually longer reach which keeps his opponents at a safe distance and then quickly steps back again to avoid a counter from his opponent. JMM: counter-punches and usually stays on offense. Floyd: counter-punches then gets back on defense. They have superb timing and are both great ring generals.

I've always thought Marquez was a better pure counter puncher than Floyd is. It's literally his only real weapon in the ring.

no floyd, you're not the best counterpuncher in the game...jmm is. you're the best defensive fighter though with good counterpunching skills but you're not the best at that. jmm counterpunches with a beautiful combination and he even counterattacks. floyd on the other hand counters with one or 2 punches and then shell up while moving backwards. jmm doesn't back down under pressure because he's too confident of his counterpunching skills. Great post.
