I know they are pulling in huge PPV numbers left and right especially in todays more advanced technology/more homes having PPV and I saw Pacquiaos bad acting commercial all over TV for a while and he has a line with Nike. I was talking to a 21yo girl who is a co worker and we got to talk about how I love boxing and she asked me who was my favorite boxer. I said you probably dont know who he is but its Sergio Martinez, you probably have heard of bigger names like Pacquiao and Mayweather. She said she didnt know who they were and she only knew of bigger names like Tyson and De La Hoya. I was kinda shocked at first because I see Pacquiao as being more renown than Mayweather so I thought she'd at least heard of him. And I know they do big numbers but Im talking about being renown as in the amount of people who know who they are. I think that Tyson and De La Hoya still are the top dogs, more people know of them. You can even check Tyson and De La Hoyas media resume from today or back in the day and its much longer than Pacquiaos especially Mayweathers. I mean you see Mike all over TV and in movies and Oscar made something like 12 appearances on the Tonight Show!!! All hail the star power of Tyson and De La Hoya!
Mayweather maybe but Pacquiao never , most people in the world dont even know who the hell is this guy .
this is just pure hating ...
back to topic, imho, they are probably closing in and definetly a fight between them must be done to reach that level and totally different Aura from Tyson or Dela Hoya, Mike everyone wants to see a Knockout and is a heavyweight, so that;s something of a plus, and Oscar was just Golden while Floyd is banking on his fans and those who want to see him loose and Pacuiao being non-American is a darkhorse...
isn't pac a platinum selling artist and he's made several movies as well.
floyd also has recorded a rap song.
that's true but i was referring to their status in fame and popularity among the general public. ortiz is in the music industry too but many outside boxing doesn't know who he is. pac and floyd haven't reached that status where they're a household name.
well. if this is the analogy you are going with, how come pac doesnt outsell floyd like tyson did DLH?
thank you
fukkin pacnuts
pac has been a ppv star since 130.. outselliing floyd's ppv total :bottle:
What is big ?
My humble meaning about big is ;
being able to throw all valid shots in boxing good, hard and straight so to speak..
Meaning a left and right jab; either which way, good and stiff.
a left and right hook; good and with strength.
a left and right uppercut; good and with strength
an left and right overhead shot punch good and with strenght.
commanding powerfull bodyshots with both arms..
The upperbody movements, not only the north.south, west east movements but all else in between whenever needed swiftly to be excecuted . And not to forget those natural boxing legmovements.
There are not many fighters who have all these qualities packed up at their disposal, during the course of a fight.
I'd say that's not what's meant by BIG in this issue.
Its about the money than.
My answer to this is that Mayweather surpassed them all, they call him "money mayweather" right, the best with him is yet to come if you ask me ?
Put a prime Oscar in today and he alone will bring in 1.5 mil ppv buys. I think they are both great ppv generators however it like another poster said, put them both against an unknown bum and let's see if they can generate 1.5+ mil buys
Mike Tyson and Oscar brought in even non boxing fans. Oscar has made more money than anyone in the sport so far. While Floyd is a GREAT salesman, Oscar had they good guy/pretty boy image(and was damn good in his day), that was such a great sell, that you had the people who hated Oscar because he was a pretty boy that could fight that would pay to see him lose. Floyd has the same deal only Oscar attracted women. Manny is a huge international sensation, but doesn't have the charm that Oscar had here in the states.
Iron Mike, Oscar, Manny, and Floyd are big time earners, but Tyson, and Oscar are still the kings when it comes to PPV and total revenue. Both Mike and Oscar had most of the boxing community behind them, and were in a sense...the beginning of the PPV era. Tyson started the PPV era, Oscar took it to a whole another level.
i think tyson and oscar have crossed over as celebrities like actors and musicians. as for pac and floyd, they're still stuck in the sports world. so no, pac and floyd have not reached that level and i don't think they ever will.
floyd weather you like him or not is the biggest money generator in the history of the sport , so i think yeah he is passed tyson and oscar. as for pac the only way he can generate the ppv numbers and money that floyd gets is to fight floyd......
Seriously, these guys wouldn't be where they are(Popularity wise) if it wasn't for Oscar. Oscar has/had everything both these guys have in terms of loyal fans, haters, women fans, media hype and marketability. Oscar was a star since Barcelona and it led all the way through his retirement.
Tyson is on another level. May and Manny aren't even close to him, in my opinionExactly! As much as Dan Rafael has a feud with Oscar, he said it best "@OscarDeLaHoya The biggest of his time and if he didnt give Mayweather and Pacquiao fights they would never have become as big."
I stand by my case that they were on Miguel Cottos level before Oscar, after Oscar they became mega stars. Even if you want to say that Pacquiao is a big name world wide guess after what fight that started happening?
And Tyson is above all them by miles and they will never surpass him. New fanboys to the sport dont understand the extent of his stardom.
In terms of status, each is different.
Tyson is an icon and always will be.
Oscar- Olympic Gold, Prizefighter, now Promoter. His name is tied to this generations name of boxers.
(Hopefully his talks of a comeback are not true- he would get beat down again- haha.)
Manny has done nothing but good things for boxing. When he is done then we can reflect back. But his successes out of the ring as a politician and endorser of different products he will stay rich and popular.
Floyd will be remembered as having tremendous skill in this generation of boxers. But that skill will be remembered as being mostly untested in the later and heavier part of his career. Hopefully Floyd is getting smart with his money, IMHO without boxing in the ring his odds of $ from endorsements is not enough for his "lifestyle".

Speaking from the UK. Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson are on a different level to eeeeeeeeveryone I would say.
De La Hoya is probably less known here than Mayweather from my reckoning. I hardly heard many randomers talking about Boxing for years (unless it was a British boxer or Tyson) until Mayweather became big and after the Hatton fight I heard more and more people mention Floyd. Similar thing with Pacquiao.
I hardly ever hear people mention Oscar, but that might be my own personal experiences. The media nowadays cover boxing a bit more but Mayweather is definitely the most promoted non-brit and has been on Sky Sports News a few times, followed by the Klitschko's recently, who have been on Ringside as well as Sky Sports News. Actually Oscar has also been on Sky Sports News not too long ago.
Anyways enough rambling I would say over here Mayweather and probably Pacquiao too are both at least on the same level of fame as Oscar, although I would say they are more known.
Tremendously accurate post Bro.
Boxing is not as popular as before , maybe in the USA it is , but not worldwide .
The only known boxers worldwide are Tyson and Ali , you ask anybody and they know who they are .I agree with the second part, but boxing is actually more popular outside of the USA. The media coverage it gets in other countries is way above the USA's coverage.
Pacman is right on tysons level about to surpass him .. if you don't admit that then your both blind and retarded. Pacman is probably one of the most famous faces in this planted history ..... go look at most peoples facebook and you'll are pacman as favorite athlete.
Pacman is the sole reason for boxings resurgence.
When you have people from every corner on earth famous actors, politicians, presidents world leaders. Top famous athletes all begging to meet you. Thats right Manny has reached icon status the face of boxing god and a damn good one . ......
Mayweather. On the other hand is mostly known in just the other us. By african americans. Very limited fanbase. .....I havent used this term in a while, but here is another perfect example of a "pacxing" fan

You have to be a boxing fan to know who Oscar De La Hoya is , worldwide .
Do you have a Census report backing that claim or simply just being opinionated? Boxing is a global sport and at least where Boxing is some what relevant, De La Hoya's name is known, similar to how Leonard, Ali, and Tyson's names where in their time. If you're talking about the communities of Yichang, China and or Sisimiut, Greenland not knowing about De La Hoya, then you may be right, as they may look at you odd if asked about Ali and Tyson.
