By Chris Williams: According to the latest boxing news, the September 17th clash between Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0, 26 KO’s) and Victor Ortiz (29-3-2, 22 KO’s) brought in a respectable 1.15 million pay per view buys.
This is a far different number compared to the 850,000 PPV buys that the Mayweather-Ortiz was rumored to have brought in several weeks ago.
These numbers make a lot more sense because we’re talking about boxing’s cash cow in Mayweather, who is second to none in capturing the boxing public’s interest. The Ortiz-Mayweather fight was much more talked about than the upcoming Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez fight at the same stage and it was helped with advertising on regular cable.
Sports Illustrated is the one that has dug up a much more realistic number than the numbers floated around recently. Given that Mayweather was pretty much the guy doing all the real marketing of the fight due to his charisma and the way he played the villain so perfectly, it’s admirable that the Mayweather-Ortiz fight did even this good.
You have to remember that Ortiz isn’t a big star and Mayweather was on his own here without someone popular and/or well known like Shane Mosley to try and lure boxing fans to purchase the Mayweather-Ortiz fight on PPV. I think Mayweather did a heck of a good job in getting that many boxing fans. If Mayweather can bring in those kinds of excellent numbers fighting an unknown fighter like Ortiz, can you imagine the kinds of numbers Mayweather would suck in if he were to face guys like Amir Khan and Manny Pacquiao? We’re talking high 1.8 to 2.0 in terms of millions of buys.

This fight selling big does not help boxing, it encourages these fighters to stick with fights we dont really want since they can cash big even on the fights we dont really want
Lol at the writer. Seriously he kissed mayweathers ass one too many in this article. He sounds like a paid publicist
You bet. This is one of the most fulsome "report" I have ever read. He all but got down on his hands and knees and kissed Mayweather's feet. "Playing the villain'... Mayweather is a guttersnipe and doen't know how else to behave, it comes quite naturally too him. Although it beings in more customers, that's nothing to be proud of since the visceral distaste for Mayweather is so great (except for his deluded fans, most of whom don't buy the PPV's) that the primarily want to see him beaten, and not only that, but beaten up.
I can't say I disagree, but don't care to watch this kind of fight myself. I like to see evenly matched skills. It all depends on the matchmaker, but sometimes with too much leaning towards the cash receipts. This of course, is business, and the potential for profit, so that all can be paid, the reason that promoters are functioning.
You actually believe this?
Chris Williams is the ultimate hack 'boxing scribe' and that site is a joke. I'd believe info from fight hype LONG before anything from bullsh*t new 24 any day. HBO, GBP are not releasing the figures because they were embarrassingly low.
Does this logic apply to Pacquiao-Mosley?
Why not discredit the other names? If if turns out that the event flopped, the blame will be placed entirely on Mayweather. 100% of the blame when it's bad, but only 20% of the credit if it's good?
That's fair.
That comes with the territory of claiming to be the king of PPV.
When speaking in terms of actual sales, anything over 1 million PPV buys is a success for Boxing, and that's with out that faggotry of comparing it to somebody else sales...with that said, if 1.15 is accurate it's a solid number, but truth is, the date, and Canelo and Morales had a good affect on it. They should be given some credit, especially Morales after the performance he gave that night.
This article is BS..Mayweather was not alone, he had names like Morales, and Canelo to help out. I know mad people who bought it to see Ortiz, Morales, and Canelo, and the possibility of seeing Mayweather lose.
Mayweather can hold his own on PPV sales, but don't discredit the other 2 names that had a big influence on the sales, especially on the weekend of Mexican Independence..

yes, likely embarassingly very low to support floyd's air as the ppv king...
erik and company may have contributed half of the ppv sold for the card..
