Surprisingly, to some, the pay-per-view figures on the Floyd Mayweather-Victor Ortiz fight have not yet been released. Please understand that this is something that customarily comes within four or five business days after the fight, in the form of a press release, but that hasn’t come, and the fight was September 17.
What usually happens in this business is that when the figures are very good, the distributor (HBO PPV) will want the whole world to know about it, as soon as possible. When the numbers aren’t so hot, they are not so anxious to let that out.
This is what has led to speculation that the number of subscribers to this fight was much lower than anticipated.
What I have heard is that they might be as low as 800,000. This is something I definitely did not figure on, as Ortiz, and just as importantly, Canelo Alvarez, should have had some appeal to the very dependable Latin audience. I was expecting a million buyers. Others I had spoken to figured it might be as high as 1.3 million.
Richard Schaefer, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, which was one of the promoters of this show, was talking in terms of 1.7 million or even more, but of course, he had a special motivation for thinking in that direction. If he really believed it, he might be very surprised by now.
This story is written with the proviso that we may never know the real figures, unless we were an interested party or had the facilities to audit every cable system in the country, which we don’t. It simply isn’t public knowledge.
"motivation? this was my motivation.. *flashes money*" SMH..
seriously, that was a good joke but tasteless for the soldiers who are putting their life on the line on the frontlines.
they want to talk to him and yet he just proceed on showing them his possessions.. :nonono:
Mayweather always acts like an idiot about money for whatever reason but he should have shown more respect to the soldiers for sure. Im sure they wanted to hear about the fight and boxing related talk not a tour of his mansion and his stacks of money. That didnt stop me from buying his fight but he did come off like a clown for that.

Who has the better numbers?
Summary of PPVs since 2005 (per Year)
Pacquiao:
2005 - 350,000
2006 - 710,000++
2007 - 550,000
2008 - 1.90 M
2009 - 2.10 M
2010 - 1.85 M
2011 - far better numbers than Floyd
May:
2005 - 340,000
2006 - 670,000
2007 - 3.34 M
2009 - 1.05 M
2010 - 1.40 M
2011 - far worse than Manny
Conclusion:
1. In the last SIX YEARS, Pac's PPV is better than Floyd except in 2007 when May fought Hatton and ODLH in the same year.
2. Even without the Larios fight, PPV Numbers of Floyd was surpassed by Manny Pacquiao since November 2010.
3. This year, it is safe to say that PPV lead of Pacquiao may reach between 1M-2M depending on the outcome of the JMM fight.
4. Manny can reach 10M ppv buys this year since 2005. I think he can be placed at #4 all-time in PPV buys. But please inform me if Im wrong (in #4). If this is true, he only needs roughly less than 3 million PPV fights so he can surpass Tyson or Holyfield (12.4-12.6M) in the All-time list. If he still has 3 fights left, then he needs to reach at least 950K PPVs per fight on the average. Not mentioning the Mayweather fight which can easily push him up as the undisputed PPV King All-time.
Note: my numbers aren't too accurate because it has been since 2005 only.

speaking the truth green k
As much as I don't really care about ppv numbers, nowadays they play a big part in fights being made... because it helps determine how much moolah is distributed/cut between the fighters... and that is a huge factor in a pac/may fight compared to all other problems. I think either men would roll over if they right number came to them
HBO even released the Maidana-Morales #'s and that was < 50k.
So its entirely possible and actually very likely that Ortiz-floyd did less than that.
Pathetic. Absolutely Pathetic.
It makes no difference to me if it sold well or not but that was funny. If you werent trying to be funny and believe that nonsense you typed you might need to get your head checked. Its getting easier by the day to see the posters not to take seriously and i think you are one of them, you are embarassing yourself, stop.
shockin when ppv numbers favor lord pacquiao the pactards are all over it but when they are against there god pac mosley they say it doesnt matter. which is it?
This PPV was sold here for around $10 only but the boxing afficionado crowd i know who usualy make bets did not bought it. That alone says a lot....
floyd is gay.

We don't know at this point. We had "sources" say 850k, 800k, even 700k. We had other "sources" say 1 million and 1.3 million.
The only "official" anything we've heard from Golden Boy or Schaefer is that the numbers are over 1 million, and still being counted. Even if it did only 850,000, it still beats when Manny fought Clottey and initial reports were that fight only sold 600,000 but they somehow ****ed that one to 700,000. I can't see this fight doing less than 1 million, when Mayweather-Marquez even did 1 million PPV's.
lol pls remember, pac clottey had no 24/7.. Floyd Ortiz brought in 24/7 all the drama with there boy hood and Floyd arguing with there dad.. So Floyd Ortiz should be bigger than Pac clottey. Should be compared to Pac Mosely.
Mosely was washed up so people don't see the glimmer there, pac brought in 1.3m with a washed up boxer.. While victor is a strong fresh champion more hype can be made there. Anything less than 1.3m is a failure..
I have a feeling with the refunds and fans being tired of the mayweather antics.. 800 buys is pretty accurate..
This is according to Michael Marley
"Hearing "real numbers" of 650,000 and then 777,0000 so I'd say K9 Kim had it about right at 850,000, we shall never know. but it's not a good sign for boxing."

this ppv lost money.. the only source that said 1.3 is floydhype which is the least credible website out there
I flew out to the fight along with a hottie I only knew from talking boxing online. We had a blast as it was both our first pro live fight. Met Roger and Jeff Mayweather, Emanuel Stewart, Mike Tyson, Thomas Hearns, Joe Frazier, Leon Spinks, Kenny Bayless, Ken Norton, Devon Alexander, Jean Pascal and some others. Not sure how many tickets were given away but the arena was packed and people were lined up outside trying to buy tickets. I can't wait to do another major fight like that. The atmosphere for a boxing fan was crazy. People yelling, fighting in the stands, side bets and beautiful chicks everywhere. Chick I was with was nice though.

Thats my estimation.
Lets face reality here. The casuals are simply tired of Floyds "look at me, "my name is Money and I have lots of it" schtick." I'm willing to bet most people got turned off by seeing him flaunt his wealth to american soldiers on the frontlines. In this economy, with millions of people out of work, bragging about your material possessions, is the last thing people will care to see. Even more will refuse to support a braggart like that.
This fight did nothing close to a million.
"motivation? this was my motivation.. *flashes money*" SMH..

maybe this fight did less than 500k

while showtime still hasnt released the numbers for pac mosley yet
yet it was published and announced by respectable websites like espn, yahoo, maxboxing, etc. meanwhile, even richard shaefer is running away from ppv talk.
I doubt it. It's still going to be 50/50 no matter what. Even if it's just 800k, it's still more than the 750k Pacquiao made with Clottey. Both Victor and Clottey are around the same level of popularity so we shouldn't have expected that much.
