There's been a lot of debate about the result of Mayweather/Ortiz. How do you view the final blows and why? Poll to follow, please discuss! :boxing::boxing:
To me is was a shocking conclusion that was a slowly unfolding train wreck, and unpredictable ending to a story that is already known story is at least an interesting twist. May not be everyone's taste but it certainly gets people to think and engage.
Sometimes bizarre shit happens in the fight game that unknown bizarre factor is part of the appeal of the sport to me, sure the fight ended prematurely in a way and there was more action to be had but to me that crazy ending is very memorable because you never see that. Plus while you might not value it in terms of boxing which I can understand the highlight will be very memorable and I think that counts for something
I don't have a problem with the punches though, to me those punches are how a real prize fighter should react when Ortiz completely fell apart.
I felt the two fighters were beginning to click in terms of both having chances to get off. I think we were going to naturally see Ortiz(or possibly mayweather) take some good punches.(which is what I paid for.) Had I really just wanted to see a highlight reel knockdown I could have watched Mike Tyson knocking out Steve-O for free on Comedy Central this past Monday, though it is always nice to add to boxing history's highlight reel.
I do however agree it definitely gets people and more importantly people outside of the usual hardcore bunch. To think and engage. Moreso than they would have had Mayweather KO'd him without controversy in the later rounds.
Sometimes bizarre things happen in boxing... Although in 2011 it's been more like frequently than just sometimes. I'd had my fill for bizarre happenings personally, hopefully 2012 has a different theme..
I understand that, but for me it was anti climactic. Was the end coming? Yes, but for most everyone this was already established well before the first bell ever rang. The point was watching the fight actually unfold in it's entirety. I respect your position, but for me. The only good thing to come of this fight is the ensuing controversy which has casual fans talking more about boxing. Other than that, I paid to see a fight end in non bizarre fashion.

Shit happens it is boxing, it was memorable to say the least, if there is one guy you don't want to have you hands down and the fight to be in a lull is Floyd he will check a dude every time.
Plus to me the guy that was going to win won, the guy falling behind had a meltdown basically and his last seconds of the fight were spent begging for help from the ref instead of defending himself after he already got punched once. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.
To me it was the difference between a real fighter and a fake, and the fake got exposed in memorable fashion. So to me it is all good, not overly impressed but I think it is a quality highlight none the less for the reasons I have said.

It was totally legal however one of the biggest cheap shots in the history of boxing and nothing that floyd should be proud of.
Classless act by a classless person, not fighter but person.
You as a fan didn't feel a little cheated after likely watching hours of build up, making plans with friends and time spent analyzing and getting hyped for the fight?

I wanna know why ortiz apologised so much to floyd. i thought he was gonna go down on his knees and suck his cock at one point.
Because Ortiz is somewhat of a softie(complete vagina), despite his "vicious" moniker.
It was great very memorable, I still don't get why Ortiz let Floyd him him twice Floyd caught him good with the first one but to look away even more exposing your chin so he can catch you with his power hand, lol.
I can understand why people don't like it from an accomplishment perspective but I think it really is a great highlight, honestly every young fighter should watch that last 20 seconds and see how a fighter should react versus what a fake does.

Now that Cortez has came out and said that he never told the 2 to fight, my stance has changed a little bit. When he said "lets go" and waved them together, in the past i've seen that done so that the ref can instruct the fighters to keep it clean or give directions followed by a "time in" or "fight". Cortez waved the both of them together, then focused his attention on the time keeper. He did it backwards.
Cortez needs to retire.

It was mostly that he looked away and sort of relaxed his body when Floyd hit him with the right. the left he would have been fine from.
It was a legal blow and an KO but none of the KO's I would be proud off... it simply looks bad because it looks like Ortiz is unaware of it - even though through his own fault - because Cortez signaled already that the fight was back on... I really do believe as soon as he saw Ortiz fell to the ground that he hoped he would get up... he ain't celebrated like after his last KO victory... so it is an KO - legal - but nothing you can be proud off - like winning a fight through dq or injury - it's a win but nothing that you can really hang your hat on
This is where Cortez screwed up. You cant signal the fight "back on" prior to it actually being back on by notifying the time keeper that its "back on". Nonetheless, Vic should have been on point. Even when fighters touch gloves, they still stay cautious.

I wonder if Mayweather thought he was punching him with enough power to get him out of there.. Or just put some good damage on him.
I basically asked myself it too - because if you look at Mayweather standing in the corner I think he felt that Ortiz could have gotten up - he still looked very tense to me... but who knows what was really going on in his mind and in Ortiz mind...
In the heat of the battle things happen at times... like I said even though we except sportmanship out of them we should never forget this is not chess... you have somebody in front of you who wants to take your head off... you are tense... you are ready to hurt someone... somebody said that you expect a soldier to go in a country and be ready to kill but if someone gives up you expect him to not kill him and take him to prison... that's easy said... but if bullets flying around you and your comrades laying dead on the ground who can really be that cool... not saying that boxing is a battle ground or sort off... but you expect someone to get in their to hurt someone but on the same sight you expect him to be always sportsman and friendly... I don't know what ppl expect from boxers...
I did feel it was legal but am not sure now (although it will likely remain a win). I have to watch it again. Cortez now saying that he never told them to fight makes me question the legality but I do feel it is certainly a cheap shot and took away from the fight. Not something to be proud of.
Someone needs to reference the official rule book. I'm guessing the whole thing is a mess and not exactly per rules since Cortez didn't send to neutral corner from beginning. Maybe that would clarify if a ref is supposed to both say AND signal the fight is on. As it stands, it would have been clearer if Cortez had done any portions of his job correctly.
But this fight will definitely not be getting overturned.
